Systemic therapy in squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva: current status and future directions.

OBJECTIVE: The advances achieved in the surgical management of vulvar squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) have not been mirrored in systemic therapy options. The objective of this paper is to summarize current evidence regarding systemic therapy in vulvar cancer, review the latest research on the biology of this disease, and identify future strategies to improve patient management. METHODS: MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched for all relevant English-language articles from inception to December 10, 2012. Existing evidence regarding systemic therapy in vulvar SCC was synthesized descriptively, with an

Interstitial granulomatous dermatitis and arthritis revealing oesophageal carcinoma.

Interstitial granulomatous dermatitis and arthritis (IGDA) is an uncommon clinicopathological condition that may occur in association with a number of systemic disorders. We present a novel case of IGDA in association with oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A 67-year-old man with a 3-month history of arthritis presented with several erythematous indurated plaques on his lateral trunk and arms. An oesophagogastroduodenoscopy showed an irregular mass 20 mm in size in the proximal third of the oesophagus, and on histopathological examination of a biopsy, the mass was identified as a poorl

A case report of conservative management of extensive proliferative verrucous leukoplakia using a carbon dioxide laser.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this report was to describe a clinical case of conservative management of extensive proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) using a carbon dioxide laser, as an alternative to complete glossectomy, which led to a sustained successful outcome over a 12-year follow-up period. BACKGROUND DATA: Patients with oral PVL, a high risk premalignant condition, are often treated by wide surgical excision. This approach can lead to significant morbidity and compromised quality of life. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 50-year-old male with PVL and superficially invasive carcinoma, who had p

Rapid developing basaloid squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix in a young adult Taiwanese.

Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) of the uterine cervix is a rare malignancy of the female genital tract with a poorer clinical outcome than SCC of the uterine cervix. We report a case of BSCC of the uterine cervix developing rapidly in a young adult Taiwanese. A 35-year-old woman, Para 2, visited the emergency room with severe dizziness, palpitations and sudden excessive vaginal bleeding with hemoglobin of 3.6 g/dl. She had been well and healthy but intermittent vaginal spotting developed for around 6 months previously and was treated as abnormal uterine bleeding by ob-gyn practitioners

Diagnosis and treatment of a pharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma in a Madagascar ground boa (Boa madagascariensis).

A 15-yr-old female Madagascar ground boa (Boa madagascariensis) presented with a history of anorexia, wheezing, and occasional open-mouth breathing. On oral examination, a firm, caseous mass was noted in the right caudoventral pharyngeal region, which was confirmed as a carcinoma on incisional biopsy. Advanced imaging (computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging) was performed to evaluate local tumor invasion and to plan for palliative radiation therapy. However, following the second treatment (10 Gy), the mass had increased in size, and the snake was euthanatized. Radiation-associated

The Role of sentinel lymph-node biopsy in managing lip squamous cell carcinoma patients without clinical evidence of nodal metastasis.

AIM: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lip is a common oral malignancy. Lymph node metastasis occurs lately in the natural history of the disease but it is associated with poor outcome. Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is an option that determines the potentially affected lymph nodes especially in clinically negative-node patients. The study aims to determine the feasibility of SLNB as a reliable staging tool in N0 stage lip SCC patients. METHODS: Eighteen patients with N0 stage lip SCC were enrolled in the study. They were subjected to SLNB using the injection of the radiocolloid materia

Anal squamous carcinoma: a new AIDS-defining cancer? Case report and literature review.

Squamous anal cell carcinoma is a rare malignancy that represents the 1.5% to 2% of all the lower digestive tract cancers. However, an increased incidence of invasive anal carcinoma is observed in HIV-seropositive population since the widespread of highly active antiretroviral therapy. Human papillomavirus is strongly associated with the pathogenesis of anal cancer. Anal intercourse and a high number of sexual partners appear to be risk factors to develop anal cancer in both sexes. Anal pain, bleeding and a palpable lesion in the anal canal are the most common clinical features. Endo-anal ultr

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor-producing squamous cell carcinoma of the lower gingiva: a case report.

The present study summarizes our experience in treating a patient with a suspected granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF)-producing squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lower gingiva, which is a rather rare entity. A 56-year-old woman underwent surgical excision of palate leukoplakia in 1996. In 2009, however, a leukoplakic superficial tumor was detected in the lower left gingiva, for which the patient underwent gingivectomy. This was subsequently diagnosed as SCC. The patient also underwent superselective arterial injection chemotherapy combined with radiotherapy, after local recurrenc

Primary vaginal squamous cell carcinoma arising in a squamous inclusion cyst: Case report.

UNLABELLED: We report the case of a 39-year-old female with primary vaginal squamous cell carcinoma arising from a squamous inclusion cyst of the posterior wall. The tumor was located in the vaginal wall and extended into the rectovaginal septum. The overlying mucosa was intact. Histologically, there was invagination of the surface squamous vaginal epithelium forming a cystic lesion. In some areas of this invagination, the squamous epithelium showed dysplastic changes (VAIN3) transitioning into invasive squamous cell carcinoma. To the best of our knowledge, we have documented the first case of

[Three cases of primary squamous cell carcinoma in the frontal sinus].

OBJECTIVE: Three cases of primary squamous cell carcinoma in the frontal sinus were reported, and the experience obtained from diagnosis, treatment of this rarely seen tumor was presented. METHODS: Between August 2006 and January 2010, 3 cases of primary squamous cell carcinoma in the frontal sinus were diagnosed and treated including one case of basaloid squamous carcinoma, one moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma and one papillary squamous cell carcinoma. All 3 cases were treated with a combined approach using the endoscope and a frontal craniotomy, followed by radiotherapy and

What role do mucins have in the development of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma? A systematic review.

Mucins are the dominant component in the protective mucus layer on mucosal surfaces including the larynx. Hence, they are part of the first line of defence against external stimuli including effect of smoking in the larynx. We asked whether existing published evidence supported the hypothesis that alteration in mucins expression/production is related to the laryngeal neoplastic process. The objective of this study is to review published evidence for mucins having an important role in normal laryngeal physiology and the development of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). We aimed to review

[Ulceration of the heel in a woman from Djibouti: squamous cell carcinoma with carcinomatous lymphangitis].

The purpose of this report is to describe a case in which a heel ulcer with atypical features, i.e., large size and rapid progression, led to diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma. Patient management was based on specialist advice obtained by "tele-dermatology" based on pictures and comments transmitted over the Internet. However, due to the risk of spreading and impossibility of providing other medical treatment (radiotherapy-chemotherapy), the lower limb was amputated at the top of the thigh.

[A case of primary lung cancer with swollen mediastinal lymph nodes due to pre-existing sarcoidosis].

A 69-year-old man, who had been followed up for sarcoidosis at another hospital from 10 years previously, was referred to our hospital because of a new lesion in the left upper lobe. A chest CT scan revealed a nodular lesion at the orifice of the left B3b and mediastinal lymphadenopathy. Bronchoscopic biopsy established a diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma. Because there had been no distant metastasis and no change in size of the mediastinal lymph nodes over the previous 5 years, left upper lobectomy with lymph node dissection was performed. The histology of the resected tumor indicated a mo

Verruciform xanthoma of the penis in a young male masquerading as squamous cell carcinoma: case report.

Verruciform xanthoma (VX) is a relatively rare benign lesion of unknown etiology with a predilection for oral mucosa. Penis is an uncommon location and to date only 17 cases of VX of penis have been reported. The lesion assumes importance as it can be easily mistaken for verrucous carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma. We present herein a case of penile VX in a 25-year-old man who was referred to our institute with a histopathologic diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma reported elsewhere. On microscopy the lesion demonstrated florid verruciform hyperplasia of the epidermis with hyperkeratosis,
