Encoding of Articulatory Kinematic Trajectories in Human Speech Sensorimotor Cortex.

When speaking, we dynamically coordinate movements of our jaw, tongue, lips, and larynx. To investigate the neural mechanisms underlying articulation, we used direct cortical recordings from human sensorimotor cortex while participants spoke natural sentences that included sounds spanning the entire English phonetic inventory. We used deep neural networks to infer speakers' articulator movements from produced speech acoustics. Individual electrodes encoded a diversity of articulatory kinematic trajectories (AKTs), each revealing coordinated articulator movements toward specific vocal tract sha

Predicting non-melanoma skin cancer via a multi-parameterized artificial neural network.

Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure and family history are major associated risk factors for the development of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). The objective of this study was to develop and validate a multi-parameterized artificial neural network based on available personal health information for early detection of NMSC with high sensitivity and specificity, even in the absence of known UVR exposure and family history. The 1997-2015 NHIS adult survey data used to train and validate our neural network (NN) comprised of 2,056 NMSC and 460,574 non-cancer cases. We extracted 13 parameters for o

Application of in vitro neurotoxicity testing for regulatory purposes: Symposium III summary and research needs.

Prediction of neurotoxic effects is a key feature in the toxicological profile of many compounds and therefore is required by regulatory testing schemes. Nowadays neurotoxicity assessment required by the OECD and EC test guidelines is based solely on in vivo testing, evaluating mainly effects on neurobehavior and neuropathology, which is expensive, time consuming and unsuitable for screening large number of chemicals. Additionally, such in vivo tests are not always sensitive enough to predict human neurotoxicity and often do not provide information that facilitates regulatory decision-making p

Optimizing the specific surface area of fly ash-based sorbents for flue gas desulfurization.

High performance sorbents for flue gas desulfurization can be synthesized by hydration of coal fly ash, calcium sulfate, and calcium oxide. In general, higher desulfurization activity correlates with higher sorbent surface area. Consequently, a major aim in sorbent synthesis is to maximize the sorbent surface area by optimizing the hydration conditions. This work presents an integrated modeling and optimization approach to sorbent synthesis based on statistical experimental design and two artificial intelligence techniques: neural network and genetic algorithm. In the first step of the approac

Quantification of the refrigerants R22 and R134a in mixtures by means of different polymers and reflectometric interference spectroscopy.

The aim of this study was the quantification of vapors of the ozone-depleting refrigerant R22 in the presence of its most important substitute R134a, by the use of the reflectometric interference spectroscopy and polymers as sensitive layers. First, the sorption characteristic of different types of polymers exposed to the vapors of the two analytes was investigated. Then, binary mixtures of the two refrigerants were measured with an array set-up on the basis of six polymer sensors. The measurements were evaluated by the use of neural networks, whereby low limits of detection of 0.45 percentage

Identification of putative exported/secreted proteins in prokaryotic proteomes.

The increasing number of bacterial genomes being sequenced fuels an equal demand for methods to rapidly analyze the proteomes of these organisms. One group of proteins of pressing importance is the exported/secreted proteins, given their dominant immunogenicity and role in pathogenesis. With this in mind, a weight matrix algorithm and two artificial neural networks, one based on amino acid position within the N-terminus and the other on amino acid frequency, were developed for identification of such proteins. The neural networks and a hybrid method, combining the weight matrix algorithm and th

Neural network detection of files of suicidal patients and suicidal profiles.

The optimal configuration of backpropagation (BP) neural networks was determined after 35 trials with different BP configurations evaluating the total detection rate. Ten different training and testing sets were used to identify optimal samples. All trials included sample files of patients with medically serious suicidal attempts (MSSA) and those of non-suicidal patients. Fifty files were used in each group for training and 49 files for testing with no overlap between the samples. The target variable for training was seriousness of suicide attempt (0 = non-suicidal, 1 = MSSA). The input set in

Mixed emotions to social situations: An fMRI investigation.

BACKGROUND: Neuroscience research has generally studied emotions each taken in isolation. However, mixed emotional states (e.g., the co-occurrence of amusement and disgust, or sadness and pleasure) are common in everyday life. Psychophysiological and behavioral evidence suggests that mixed emotions may have response profiles that are distinguishable from their constituent emotions. Yet, the brain bases of mixed emotions remain unresolved. METHODS: We recruited 38 healthy adults who viewed short, validated film clips, eliciting either positive (amusing), negative (disgusting), neutral, or mixe

Denoising of low-dose chest computed tomography images using a U-net based convolutional autoencoder and transfer learning.

Objective.Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) is a widely used imaging modality for performing CT examinations with reduced radiation exposure to patients. However, it suffers from increased image noise and artifacts compared to standard-dose imaging, which can hinder its diagnostic efficacy. Deep learning (DL) approaches have proven effective in LDCT denoising; however, they typically require large training datasets, which are difficult to obtain in clinical settings, particularly for denoising tasks. In this paper, a lightweight and versatile DL-based algorithm for chest LDCT denoising is pr

Evaluation of deep learning-based methods for automatic detection and segmentation of brain metastases in T1-contrast MRI for stereotactic radiosurgery.

BACKGROUND: Brain metastases (BMs) are manually contoured during stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) treatment planning, which is both time-consuming and potentially inconsistent. To address these challenges, researchers have been actively developing deep learning-based approaches for the detection and segmentation of BMs. However, a comprehensive comparative analysis of deep learning models across different frameworks remains largely absent in the current literature. This study aimed to evaluate and compare deep learning models based on different frameworks for the detection and segmentation of B

Bridging machine learning and evolutionary optimization of threshold specific dosages of Nisin to suppress MRSA biofilm.

Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a Gram-positive potent biofilm forming pathogen responsible for minor skin infection to life-threatening sepsis due to its resistance towards traditional antibiotics. The biofilm forming ability of this organism serves as a primary driver of this resistance, rendering traditional therapeutic strategies critically limited. To address this challenge, a natural antimicrobial peptide, Nisin, produced by Lactococcus lactis, was deployed employed against 14 different MRSA isolates. The present study implements an artificial intelligence and machine

Streamlining Acute Abdominal Aortic Dissection Management-An AI-based CT Imaging Workflow.

Life-threatening acute aortic dissection (AD) demands timely diagnosis for effective intervention. To streamline intrahospital workflows, automated detection of AD in abdominal computed tomography (CT) scans seems useful to assist humans. We aimed at creating a robust convolutional neural network (CNN)-based pipeline capable of real-time screening for signs of abdominal AD in CT. In this retrospective study, abdominal CT data from AD patients presenting with AD and from non-AD patients were collected (n 195, AD cases 94, mean age 65.9 years, female ratio 35.8%). A CNN-based algorithm was devel

Cascaded redundant convolutional encoder-decoder network improved apnea detection performance using tracheal sounds in post anesthesia care unit patients.

Objective. Methods of detecting apnea based on acoustic features can be prone to misdiagnosed and missed diagnoses due to the influence of noise. The aim of this paper is to improve the performance of apnea detection algorithms in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) using a denoising method that processes tracheal sounds without the need for separate background noise.Approach. Tracheal sound data from laboratory subjects was collected using a microphone. Record a segment of clinical background noise and clean tracheal sound data to synthesize the noisy tracheal sound data according to a speci

Estimating Pitch Information From Simulated Cochlear Implant Signals With Deep Neural Networks.

Cochlear implant (CI) users, even with substantial speech comprehension, generally have poor sensitivity to pitch information (or fundamental frequency, F0). This insensitivity is often attributed to limited spectral and temporal resolution in the CI signals. However, the pitch sensitivity markedly varies among individuals, and some users exhibit fairly good sensitivity. This indicates that the CI signal contains sufficient information about F0, and users' sensitivity is predominantly limited by other physiological conditions such as neuroplasticity or neural health. We estimated the upper lim
