Examination of Executive Function and Social Phobia Among Female College-Aged Students With Celiac Disease.

Celiac disease (CD) is a T-cell mediated genetically inherited autoimmune disease affecting approximately 1% of the population. Research suggests that CD impacts executive functioning (EF) and social phobia (SP). However, most of the literature in this area focuses on age groups outside of the traditional college age range and has never measured EF and SP together. This descriptive study compared traditional age female college students with CD to age- and sex-matched college students without CD on measures of EF and SP. Participants completed the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function

A tailored nurse coaching intervention for oral chemotherapy adherence.

Although patients frequently express a preference for oral medications, compliance to these medications varies. Patients often have difficulty adhering to their medication schedules due to lack of understanding, inadequate support, or unwelcome side effects. Fostering adherence to oral chemotherapy regimens improves patients' chance of survival and long-term quality of life. This randomized trial tested the effectiveness of a tailored intervention to promote adherence to oral chemotherapeutic agents in 45 adult patients with cancer. The control group received the standard chemotherapy educatio

Craniofacial and shoulder asymmetry and its relationship to temporomandibular disorder: A study of 183 patients.

We conducted a prospective study to ascertain the prevalence of features of craniofacial and shoulder asymmetry and to determine if they are related to temporomandibular disorder (TMD). Our study population was made up of 183 patients-105 females and 78 males, aged 8 to 92 years (mean: 53.5; median: 60) who presented to a private otolaryngologic practice in a rural retirement community in Arizona. These patients completed a questionnaire to determine their self-assessment of the their body asymmetry. Next, all patients underwent a nurse evaluation for the presence or absence of asymmetry, whic

The lived experience of adults with bipolar disorder and comorbid substance use disorder.

There is a high incidence of comorbid substance use in the bipolar population. Co-occurring substance use in this population increases negative outcomes and changes the illness presentation. Currently there is a lack of insight into the lived experience of adults with bipolar disorder and comorbid substance abuse. This descriptive phenomenological study describes and enhances the understanding of what it is like to live with bipolar disorder and comorbid substance used disorder. The data were collected using face-to-face in-depth interviews. Six distinctive themes were developed and validated

Conventional direct laryngoscopy versus videolaryngoscopy with the GlideScope®: a neonatal manikin study with inexperienced intubators.

We hypothesized that because the view of the glottis is better with videolaryngoscopes, successful intubation in neonates would be accomplished in a shorter time with the GlideScope (®) (Verathon, Inc., Bothell, WA) videolaryngoscope (GVL). Forty-five students of the University of Athens, inexperienced in both techniques, participated in the study (21 medical students and 24 nursing students, crossover randomized study). Following a brief educational session, each participant practiced and attempted intubation on a neonatal manikin using conventional laryngoscope and GVL, as many times as requ

Providers' assessment of barriers to effective management of hypertension and hyperlipidemia in community health centers.

We explored 251 providers' (47% licensed practical nurses, 27% registered nurses, 10% physicians, 10% physician assistants, 6% other) perceptions of barriers to effective management of hypertension and hyperlipidemia from 72 Midwest community health centers (CHCs). Optimal care for these diseases is difficult in any setting; little is known about the specific barriers CHCs face. Community health centers often have a multidisciplinary team that participates in patient care. Current models of quality improvement and chronic care management require virtually all CHC providers to know clinical gui

The impact of emergency department structure and care processes in delivering care for non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndromes.

BACKGROUND: We sought to assess the influence of emergency department (ED) structure and care processes on adherence to practice guidelines for the treatment of patients with non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndromes. METHODS: We surveyed emergency physicians and nurses from 316 hospitals participating in the CRUSADE Quality Improvement Initiative and used multivariable modeling to correlate ED-specific characteristics with guidelines adherence. RESULTS: Factors that were significantly associated with improved guidelines adherence included collaboration between emergency physicians a

Feminist conceptualizations of women's madness: a review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Gender is one aspect of an individual's identity that has been widely debated and discussed in relation to many different aspects of social life. The literature review explores how gender stereotypes affect women and their experience of mental illness. The aim is to demonstrate how a feminist perspective provides a useful lens through which women's experience of mental illness can be viewed. METHODS: The papers were identified by a computerized search of the CINAHL, Medline, BIDS ISI and Mental Health Nursing Collection databases and a hand search. All papers were screened and sub

HIV & AIDS in older adults.

Many Americans mistakenly believe that older adults are not at risk for HIV/AIDS. Older people do not perceive themselves to be at risk for HIV infection, either. In reality, approximately 10% of AIDS cases are among people older than 50. Many health care providers lack an awareness of the risk of HIV/AIDS in the elderly population, and as a result, many older people with these conditions are misdiagnosed with other ailments. Major manifestations of HIV/AIDS in elderly adults include Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, herpes zoster, tuberculosis, cytomegalovirus, oral thrush, Mycobacterium avium

Practical nutrition education: special considerations for athletes.

The interest in sports nutrition and fitness over the last 10 years has risen beyond our wildest beliefs. Athletes are breaking new records every year, pushing their bodies past points ever thought possible. Athletes must rely on nutrition to help them reach their goals. Books, magazines, newspapers, and television provide the latest information on nutrition and diets, some credible, some not; and athletes are the perfect target for "the magic formula or pill." As health care professionals, we have the responsibility to help our patients to synthesize new information without overlooking the mo

Hypertension Management in Breastfeeding Patients: Balancing Maternal Blood Pressure Control and Infant Safety.

Hypertension is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States, affecting nearly half of all Americans, according to the NIH. Postpartum hypertension is a clinically important form of hypertension that can be preexisting or arise during or after pregnancy. While there are many medications available to manage it, many of them have side effects that can affect the patient, lactation, the nursing infant, or a combination of these factors. This review summarizes the available lactation safety data for commonly used antihypertensive medications, including breast milk concentrations, r

Bibliometric analysis of oncology communication from 1976 to 2025: a focus on narrative medicine.

Clinical communication in oncology has become a central component of supportive cancer care, with direct implications for symptom management, psychosocial distress, decision-making, caregiver support, survivorship, and palliative transitions. This bibliometric analysis examined 949 documents indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection between 1976 and 2025 in order to map the field's intellectual structure, publication profile, and thematic development. The study combined PRISMA-guided corpus construction with bibliometric techniques including co-citation analysis, thematic clustering, and s

[Treatment Expectations in the Perioperative Setting - Influence on Postoperative Pain Treatment].

Treatment expectations are relevant modulators of postoperative pain and recovery. In perioperative care, patients' expectations are shaped by previous experiences, verbal information, social learning, and the therapeutic context. Positive expectations may enhance analgesic effects via placebo mechanisms, whereas negative expectations may increase pain and reduce treatment efficacy via nocebo mechanisms. For anaesthetists, this offers a practical opportunity to improve perioperative pain management. During the preoperative consultation, patients can be asked about the intensity of pain they exp

Midwifery practice in Mongolia: Policy implications for accelerating care delivery transformation.

Midwives can play a significant role in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rates as well as in improving maternal and perinatal health outcomes in low- and middle-income countries such as Mongolia. However, the shortage of midwives in Mongolia is severe. Despite the evidence indicating numerous challenges associated with substandard midwifery education and practice in Mongolia, there is a need for policy recommendations to accelerate the improvement of midwifery care delivery in the country. Therefore, we identified three main topics as key issues in Mongolian midwifery care: 1) the curr
