BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate risk factors for peritonitis associated with peritoneal dialysis in our centre.
METHODS: Forty patients on chronic peritoneal dialysis between 2006-2010 were enrolled in this study. Nutritional, sociodemographical, psychological, dialysis related (peritoneal modality, characteristics and adequacy) possible risk factors associated with the development of peritonitis were recorded. The nutritional status, parasite prevalence and immediate skin hypersensitivity to Ascaris and Schistosoma antigens were determined for 185 schoolchildren living in two ujamaa villages in Northern Tanzania. Ninety-six untreated patients with malignant lymphoma (ML), 81 Hodgkin's disease, and 15 Burkitt's lymphoma were studied for zinc (Zn) status, and 21 patients also had selenium (Se) status analysis. Plasma and hair Zn and Se levels were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Chronic Zn and Se deficiencies (low plasma and low hair Zn and Se levels together) were found to be associated with ML in Turkish children. In this prospective cohort of 2006 individuals with drug-susceptible tuberculosis in India, 18% had unfavorable treatment outcomes (4.7% treatment failure, 2.5% recurrent infection, 4.1% death, 6.8% loss to follow-up) over a median 12-month follow-up period. Age, male sex, low education, nutritional status, and alcohol use were predictors of unfavorable outcomes.

A 74-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of constipation and marked abdominal distension. She had become to be bedridden after cerebral infarction 10 years previously, and was tabescent due to vomiting. A left hemicolectomy and colostomy were performed because conservative therapy seemed to be ineffective. The postoperative course was good and her nutritional status improved.
