Malaria and Early African Development: Evidence from the Sickle Cell Trait.

We examine the effect of malaria on economic development in Africa over the very long run. Using data on the prevalence of the mutation that … e ethnic group level, we find little evidence of a negative relationship between malaria burden and population density or other measures of development.

Bone loss in patients with breast or prostate cancer.

Cancers of the breast and prostate are very common in the general population, with breast cancer accounting worldwide for 23% of cancer cases in women and prostate cancer accounting for 12% of cases in men. During the past decade, the survival rates of patients with estrogen-dependent breast cancer and testosterone-dependent prostate cancer have improved. This improvement has been possible thanks to the introduction of hormone treatments that suppress the synthesis or antagonize the actions of gonadal steroids. However, estrogen and testosterone deficiencies are associated with excessive bone

[Fortification of food with vitamin D is a reasonable approach to fracture prophylaxis].

Vitamin-D deficiency is common in immobile elderly and non-Western immigrants and has been related to muscle weakness in these populations. When serum calcidiol concentrations are below 50 nmol/l, parathyroid hormone concentrations increase, causing bone resorption. Bone mineral density and proximal muscle strength increase as the serum concentration ofcalcidiol increases. Vitamin-D supplementation is reported to reduce the incidence of fractures in nursing home residents. Dutch guidelines recommend vitamin-D supplementation for nursing home residents and for those who are house-bound. Fortifi

New insights in the treatment of dyslipidemia: a focus on cardiovascular event reduction and the anti-atherosclerotic effects of atorvastatin.

The identification and treatment of dyslipidemia is a critical component of ongoing efforts to reduce the incidence of atherosclerotic disease in both men and women. Several recent large-scale atorvastatin trials provide a plethora of information that expands the current body of literature describing the pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease and the prevention of acute cardiovascular events. These trials demonstrate the benefit of statin therapy in a broad variety of patient populations, explore the clinical efficacy of more intensive statin regimens, and suggest that the pleiotropic effec

Meta-analyses of therapies for postmenopausal osteoporosis. IX: Summary of meta-analyses of therapies for postmenopausal osteoporosis.

This section summarizes the results of the seven systematic reviews of osteoporosis therapies published in this series [calcium, vitamin D, hormone replacement therapy (HRT), alendronate, risedronate, raloxifene, and calcitonin] and systematic reviews of etidronate and fluoride we have published elsewhere. We highlight the methodological strengths and weaknesses of the individual studies, and summarize the effects of treatments on the risk of vertebral and nonvertebral fractures and on bone density, including effects in different patient subgroups. We provide an estimate of the expected impact

The genetics of osteoporosis.

A genetic component clearly contributes to bone mass determination by influencing peak bone mass acquisition or, to a lesser degree, bone loss later in life. The analysis of genetic markers for osteoporosis is complex because multiple genes are involved and because osteoporosis is a multifactorial disease. The influence of a number of candidate gene alleles on bone mass has been studied in various populations. Results have been inconsistent and, at times, contradictory, as illustrated by studies on the vitamin D receptor gene. The most conclusive finding is the association linking the Sp1 poly

[Insecticide treatment (Pour on and Spot on) of cattle against Glossina fuscipes fuscipes in the Central African Republic].

Four herds of Mbororo Zebu cattle (approximately 40 head each) in traditional situation of the Fulani breeders were treated over a 12 month period. Flumethrin Pour on was first used every three weeks during the rainy season and then deltamethrin Spot on was used every six weeks during the dry season. Pour on treatments might affect the age structure and feeding patterns of the neighbouring populations of G fuscipes. However, the treatments had no impact on the apparent density of flies. They changed neither the prevalence of trypanosome infection rates in cattle nor the hematocrit levels. This

Vector competence of Simulium metallicum s.l. (Diptera: Simuliidae) in two endemic areas of human onchocerciasis in northern Venezuela.

Experimental infections of Simulium metallicum s.l. with Onchocerca volvulus were carried out in two onchocerciasis foci, Altamira and Trincheras, in northern Venezuela, to determine vector competence. Wild-caught flies, fed on infected volunteers, were maintained in the laboratory for 13-15 days at 27 degrees C. Parasite development was complete but asynchronous and retarded. No differences in the vector competence of the two populations of S. metallicum s.l. were found. However, a less efficient development of the parasite occurred during the dry season at both localities. The distribution o

[The clinical, neurophysiological and differential diagnostic aspects in a study of severe forms of early childhood autism].

Clinical, pathopsychological and neurophysiological studies have been carried out in 85 children with infantile autistic psychosis and in 38 girls with Rett's syndrome. New improved differential diagnostic criteria between these two forms of early childhood autism have been suggested. EEG spectral density values in alpha-1, alpha-2, beta and theta subbands are established to be their neurophysiological markers. Special attention was paid to close relationship between ontogenetic neuromorphogenesis of the brain cortical structures (e.g. physiological lysis of cortical cell populations at the ag

The contribution of B-cell proliferation to spleen enlargement in Babesia microti-infected mice.

Flow cytofluorimetric analysis showed that B-cell proliferation makes a major contribution to the enlargement and increased cellularity of the spleen, which are characteristic of Babesia microti infections in mice. Expansion of the B-cell population was accompanied by modulation of the cell surface, which affected most B lymphocytes, and which was detected as a reduction in the density of surface immunoglobulin. This effect was noted as early as Day 7, shortly after the appearance of parasites in the circulation and the onset of gross spleen changes. In contrast to the results for B cells, the

Revealing genetic foundations underlying cardiometabolic traits: integrating twin and GWAS data in Asian populations.

BACKGROUND: Traditional twin studies have reported high heritability estimates for common cardiometabolic traits, yet discrepancies compared to genome-wide association studies (GWAS) derived estimates underscore the effects of "missing heritability", potentially attributed to genetic interactions and environmental influences. However, research exploring potential contributors to missing heritability in cardiometabolic phenotypes remains scarce and largely confined to European populations. METHODS: We analyzed twin data (n = 2548) from the Chinese National Twin Registry (CNTR) and GWAS summary

Retinal structure and visual pathway function at school age in children born extremely preterm: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Children born extremely preterm (gestational age < 28 weeks) show reduced visual function even without any cerebral or ophthalmological neonatal diagnosis. In this study, we aimed to assess the retinal structure with optical coherence tomography (OCT) and visual function with pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials (PR-VEPs) in a geographically defined population-based cohort of school-aged children born extremely preterm. Moreover, we aimed to explore the association between measures of retinal structure and visual pathway function in this cohort. METHODS: All children born ext

Association of C-Terminal Pro-Endothelin-1 with Mortality in the Population-Based KORA F4 Study.

INTRODUCTION: Endothelin-1 and its prohormone C-terminal pro-endothelin-1 (CT-proET-1) have been linked to metabolic alterations, inflammatory responses and cardiovascular events in selected study populations. We analyzed the association of CT-proET-1 with cardiovascular events and mortality, carotid intima-media-thickness as surrogate for early atherosclerotic lesions, biomarkers of subclinical inflammation and adipokines in a population-based study. METHODS: The cross-sectional and prospective analyses used data from the KORA F4 study with a median follow-up time of 9.1 (8.8-9.4) years. Dat

People living with HIV have low trabecular bone mineral density, high bone marrow adiposity, and poor trabecular bone microarchitecture at the proximal femur.

UNLABELLED: People living with HIV (PLWH) have increased risk of osteoporosis and fractures. We assessed the proximal femur of PLWH and age-matched seronegative controls using quantitative computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Results suggest that the trabecular compartment is compromised at fracture-prone regions in the proximal femur of PLWH. INTRODUCTION: People living with HIV (PLWH) have increased risk of osteoporosis and fractures. However, studies assessing the main determinants of bone strength in the proximal femur exclude this vulnerable population. We assessed the pro

The rise and fall of rabies in Japan: A quantitative history of rabies epidemics in Osaka Prefecture, 1914-1933.

Japan has been free from rabies since the 1950s. However, during the early 1900s several large-scale epidemics spread throughout the country. Here we investigate the dynamics of these epidemics between 1914 and 1933 in Osaka Prefecture, using archival data including newspapers. The association between dog rabies cases and human population density was investigated using Mixed-effects models and epidemiological parameters such as the basic reproduction number (R0), the incubation and infectious period and the serial interval were estimated. A total of 4,632 animal rabies cases were reported, mai…

The astrocyte inhibition of peripheral nerve regeneration is reversed by Schwann cells.

Schwann cell transplantation into the lesioned or demyelinated central nervous system (CNS) is being extensively explored as an approach to favorably influencing repair in the CNS. Under a variety of circumstances, however, the CNS glial microenvironment appears to offer an unfavorable terrain for the promotion of neurite elongation and for Schwann cell differentiation. Due to the heterogeneity of the cellular contents at injury sites, the specific role of each cell type present in limiting Schwann cell function is unclear. The damaged peripheral nervous system, a system capable of substantial

Screening of malaria infections in human blood samples with varying parasite densities and anaemic conditions using AI-Powered mid-infrared spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Effective testing for malaria, including the detection of infections at very low densities, is vital for the successful elimination of the disease. Unfortunately, existing methods are either inexpensive but poorly sensitive or sensitive but costly. Recent studies have shown that mid-infrared spectroscopy coupled with machine learning (MIRs-ML) has potential for rapidly detecting malaria infections but requires further evaluation on diverse samples representative of natural infections in endemic areas. The aim of this study was, therefore, to demonstrate a simple AI-powered, reagent

Assessing the daily natural history of asymptomatic Plasmodium infections in adults and older children in Katakwi, Uganda: a longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Low-density asymptomatic Plasmodium infections are prevalent in endemic areas, but little is known about their natural history. The trajectories of these infections and their propensity to fluctuate to undetectable densities can affect detection in clinical trials and field studies. We aimed to classify the natural history of these infections in a high transmission area over 29 days. METHODS: In this longitudinal cohort study, we enrolled healthy, malaria-asymptomatic, afebrile, adults (age 18-59 years) and older children (age 8-17 years) in Katakwi District, Uganda, who were nega

The gut-bone axis: impact of diet on gut microbiome and osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis, a global health challenge characterized by reduced bone mineral density (BMD) and increased fracture risk, is closely linked to interactions between dietary patterns and gut microbiota (GM). Recent advances in GM research highlight the gut-bone axis as a pivotal focus in osteoporosis studies, revealing that variations in dietary habits and nutrient intake differentially modulate GM composition and metabolic activity, thereby influencing skeletal health. This review synthesizes current evidence on the interplay between dietary practices, GM, and bone health, aiming to identify pre
