Prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus among James Bay Cree women in northern Quebec.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus has been reported to vary widely in aboriginal populations. Most of the data have come from the United States. To help determine the extent of gestational diabetes in Canada's aboriginal population, the authors assessed the prevalence in a population of Cree women in northern Quebec. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using the National Diabetes Data Group (NDDG) criteria. Information was obtained from patient charts on pregnancies between January 1995 and December 1996 among women residing in 9 Cree communities in the ea

Antibodies to Mycobacterium paratuberculosis and nine species of environmental mycobacteria in Crohn's disease and control subjects.

Cultural and serological studies have provided limited, often conflicting, evidence of a role for mycobacteria in the pathogenesis of Crohn's disease. Interest has focussed on Mycobacterium paratuberculosis, previously considered to be common in the environment with no major role as a human pathogen. Whether a specific serum antibody response to mycobacteria occurs in Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis was investigated. Sera from patients with Crohn's disease (n = 38), ulcerative colitis (n = 15), and a healthy control population (n = 30) were assayed in an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay

ID1 and ID3 functions in the modulation of the tumour immune microenvironment in adult patients with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

INTRODUCTION: B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) in adults often presents a poor prognosis. ID1 and ID3 genes have been identified as predictors of poor response in Colombian adult B-ALL patients, contributing to cancer development. In various cancer models, these genes have been associated with immune regulatory populations within the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME). B-ALL progression alters immune cell composition and the bone marrow (BM) microenvironment, impacting disease progression and therapy response. This study investigates the relationship between ID1 and ID3 expression

Investigating the factor structure and measurement invariance of the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q) in a community sample of gender minority adults from the United States.

OBJECTIVE: The Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q) is one of the most widely used self-report assessments of eating disorder symptoms. However, evidence indicates potential problems with its original factor structure and associated psychometric properties in a variety of populations, including gender minority populations. The aim of the current investigation was to explore several previously published EDE-Q factor structures and to examine internal consistency and measurement invariance of the best-fitting EDE-Q model in a large community sample of gender minority adults. METHOD

Interfractional shifts of the carina and hilum during radiotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer: A retrospective study to identify associated factors.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic lymph nodes are critical targets in radiotherapy for locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (LA-NSCLC), but their accurate localization is complicated by interfractional shifts. PURPOSE: To evaluate the interfractional carina and hilum shifts as surrogates for thoracic lymph node areas during conventional fractionated radiotherapy for LA-NSCLC and to explore baseline characteristics of patients related to these shifts. METHODS: For 23 patients, the carina and hilum nearest the primary tumor were marked on daily cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images after verte

Retrospective Review of Intraoperative Hypotension and Perioperative Angiotensin Inhibitor Use in Pediatrics.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative management of angiotensin inhibitors is contentious in adults and understudied in children. Perioperative angiotensin inhibitor management in pediatrics cannot be extrapolated from adult literature because of dynamic neurohormonal pediatric physiology and uniquely pediatric indications for angiotensin inhibitor therapy. There is limited evidence for whether angiotensin inhibitors should be held in the perioperative setting in the pediatric population. AIMS: The aim of this study is to assess whether perioperative angiotensin inhibitor use is associated with intraoper

A Review on Cervical Cancer Screening in Transgender Men: What Are the Particularities of This Approach?

PURPOSE: Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the population with a uterus and vagina worldwide. Transgender men (TM) undergo less screening for cervical cancer than the population of cisgender women (CW). This review aimed to summarize the evidence on screening methods for cervical cancer in TM. METHODS: This is an integrative review structured along three axes: barriers of screening, colpocytology and human papillomavirus (HPV) screening. The keywords, "transgender," "uterine cervix cancer," "pap smear," and "pap test," were used to search articles in Embase and PubMed databa

Population change of Trillium govanianum (Melanthiaceae) amid altered indigenous harvesting practices in the Indian Himalayas.

ETHNOBOTANICAL RELEVANCE: Trillium govanianum Wall. ex D. Don (Melanthiaceae) is valued as a traditional medicinal herb in the Himalayan region. Applications include treatment of cancer, hypertension, neurasthenia, giddiness, arthritis, dysentery, inflammation, sepsis and reproductive disorders. Its range is highly specific, and limited to cold, shaded and moist habitats at 2400-3500 m a.s.l. Rhizomes are gathered from wild populations for trade, and this has recently emerged as a significant source of income among indigenous people of the Indian Himalayan region. AIM: To assess the impact of

Outlier maternal haplogroups N5 and X2 and their potential role in elevated tuberculosis prevalence among the Sahariya tribe.

India bears the largest burden of tuberculosis (TB) cases in the world. Prior studies have highlighted significantly higher pulmonary TB among the Sahariya tribal population in Central India. The disease susceptibility of a population to disease may be influenced by genetic ancestry. In this context, we investigated the maternal genetic ancestry of the Sahariya in relation to their neighbouring tribal populations. For this study, we used the largest available dataset (n = 729), comprising 140 Sahariya individuals and 589 individuals from adjacent caste and tribal groups (including 50 newly seq

Reported health and social consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on vulnerable populations and implemented solutions in six West African countries: A media content analysis.

Coronavirus has spread worldwide with over 140 million cases and resulting in more than 3 million deaths between November 2019 to April 2021, threatening the socio-economic and psychosocial stability of many families and communities. There has been limited research to understand the consequences of COVID-19 on vulnerable populations in West Africa, and whether such consequences differ by countries' previous experience with Ebola. Using a media analysis of leading online news sources, this study identified the populations particularly vulnerable to the threats of the COVID-19 pandemic, describe

Frequency of replication errors in colorectal cancer and their association with family history.

BACKGROUND: Replication errors (RERs) characterise tumours of hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC). RER status may therefore improve identification of such families previously diagnosed by family history alone. AIMS: To assess RER and HNPCC frequency within a population of colorectal cancer patients and a regional population of family history defined (Amsterdam criteria) HNPCC families. METHODS: Family history was assessed by personal interview in a population of 479 patients with colorectal cancer attending one follow up clinic. Seven fluorescently labelled microsatellites wer

Population structure of Bacillus cereus sensu lato associated with foodborne outbreaks in France between 2004 and 2023.

Bacillus cereus sensu lato (Bcsl) is a group of closely related bacterial species known for their resistant spores, enabling them to persist in a dormant state and thereby colonize and adapt across diverse environments. Bcsl is known for its harmful impact on human health, producing toxins that cause emetic and diarrheal syndromes or provoking extradigestive infections. Importantly, Bcsl is the most frequent confirmed or presumptive causative agent associated with foodborne outbreaks (FBOs) in France. In our study, we assessed the population structure of a large collection of Bcsl isolated dur

Neutral and adaptive loci reveal fine-scale population structure in Eleginops maclovinus from north Patagonia.

Patagonia is an understudied area, especially when it comes to population genomic studies with relevance to fishery management. However, the dynamic and heterogeneous landscape in this area can harbor an important but cryptic genetic population structure. Once such information is revealed, it can be integrated into the management of infrequently investigated species. Eleginops maclovinus is a protandrous hermaphrodite species with economic importance for local communities that are currently managed as a single genetic unit. In this study, we sampled five locations distributed across a salinity

The prevalence of dermatophytoses in Brazil: a systematic review.

Dermatophytosis is a common cutaneous mycosis worldwide whose prevalence in Brazil is still unknown. This systematic review has estimated the burden of dermatophytoses from updated literature data reported in the general Brazilian population. We used the following databases: Web of Science, Medline/PubMed, Embase, The Cochrane Library and Scopus for studies published between 2011 and 2020. Original articles with an emphasis on prevalence data for dermatophytosis in the Brazilian population, and diagnosed by culture exam or molecular biology were eligible. We also assessed the methodological qu
