Targeted Victimization and Suicidality Among Trans People: A Web-Based Survey.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between a series of empirically known risk and protective factors and suicidality among trans people in Sweden. METHODS: Participants were self-selected anonymously to a web-based survey conducted in 2014. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to assess associations between contributing factors and suicide ideation in the past 12 months and lifetime suicide attempts. RESULTS: The analysis included 796 trans individuals, between 15 and 94 years of age, who live in Sweden. A total of 37% of r

Evidence-based pain medicine for primary care physicians.

The last several decades have seen a marked increase in both the recognition and treatment of chronic pain. Unfortunately, patients frequently misunderstand both the nature of pain and the best practices for its treatment. Because primary care physicians treat the majority of chronic pain, they are ideally situated to provide evidence-based pain care. The majority of the medical evidence supports a biopsychosocial model of pain that integrates physical, emotional, social, and cultural variables. The goal of this primer is to assist primary care physicians in their understanding of pain, evalua

The bird dancer and the warrior king: Divergent lived experiences of Tourette syndrome in Bali.

In the past two decades, ethnographic, epidemiological and interdisciplinary research has robustly established that culture is significant in determining the long-term outcomes of people with neurodevelopmental, neuropsychiatric and mood disorders. Yet these cultural factors are certainly not uniform across discrete individual experiences. Thus, in addition to illustrating meaningful differences for people with neuropsychiatric disorder between different cultures, ethnography should also help detail the variations within a culture. Different subjective experiences or outcomes are not solely du

Teaching health-care trainees empathy and homelessness IQ through service learning, reflective practice, and altruistic attribution.

This article describes a novel inter-professional curriculum designed to address the needs of homeless patients in a Midwestern region of the United States which has high rates of poverty. The curriculum is intended for healthcare trainees coming from undergraduate pre-medical programs, nursing, pharmacy, social work, clinical psychology, medical school and post-graduate medical training in family medicine, medicine-pediatrics, and psychiatry. The clinical component is specifically designed to reach destitute patients and the curriculum is structured to reverse commonly held myths about homele

Rare medical manifestations of severe restricting and purging: "Zebras," missed diagnoses, and best practices.

OBJECTIVE: Medical problems that arise due to severe restricting and/or purging may be misdiagnosed or suboptimally treated, from outpatient clinics to top medical hospitals. A symptom may be presumed to be a psychological manifestation of the eating disorder and inappropriately dismissed for further medical evaluation. Alternatively, a detailed medical workup may be performed, overlooking a classic relationship between starvation and a physical finding, which delays referral to eating disorder care. This review article focuses on rare medical issues (also called "zebras" in medical training),

Management of psoriasis in adolescence.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory cutaneous disorder affecting 2%-4% of the world's population. The prevalence of the disease in childhood and adolescence ranges between 0.5% and 2%. The management of psoriasis in adolescence is an intriguing and complicated task. Given the paucity of officially approved therapies, the very limited evidence-based data from randomized controlled trials, and the absence of standardized guidelines, physicians must rely on published experience from case reports both from the field of dermatology as well as from the application of these drugs for other pediatric

Food allergy and anaphylaxis in pediatrics: update 2010-2012.

This review highlights the progress made in food allergy (FA) and anaphylaxis research in pediatrics published in the journal Pediatric Allergy and Immunology since 2010. Putative risk factors for FA are as follows: a family history of allergic disease, particularly in the mother, low birth order, season of birth, and severe atopic eczema. Obstetric practices, antibiotic use, and home environment are factors deserving further research. Diagnostic decision levels and component-specific IgE are useful in the diagnosis of FA; however, oral food challenges remain the gold standard and may also be

Changes in affect during treatment for depression and anxiety.

We tested the hypothesis that the tripartite model [Clark, L. A., & Watson, D. (1991). Tripartite model of anxiety and depression: Psychometric evidence and psychometric implications. Journal of Abnormal Psychology, 100, 316-336] can be extended to account for change during treatment for anxiety and depression. Forty-one patients treated naturalistically in private practice with cognitive behavior therapy completed weekly measures of depression, anxiety, negative affect (NA), positive affect (PA), and anxious arousal (AA). Consistent with the model, NA was associated with anxiety and depressio

Switching antipsychotics: an updated review with a focus on quetiapine.

Atypical antipsychotics offer broader efficacy and improved tolerability compared with conventional agents. Many patients currently treated with conventional antipsychotics continue to experience persistent symptoms or troublesome side effects and may benefit from a change to one of the newer atypical agents. There are also significant differences in the side-effect profiles of the atypicals, such that a switch from one atypical agent to another could offer advantages to many patients. Unfortunately, many clinicians remain uncertain about the switching process and are reluctant to initiate cha

[Memory. An introduction to the study of the cognitive disorders in normal and pathological aging].

INTRODUCTION: As the life expectancy of the population rises, there is also an increase in the frequency of the diseases that appear in the elderly. Aging can be healthy or pathological, but the borderline between the two is still a bit fuzzy. DEVELOPMENT: With the increase in the longevity of the population, Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and other illnesses linked to the aging process have become more common, above all in people between 65 and 85 years of age. The cognitive aspects that, in clinical practice, are most frequently seen to be involved are memory, attention, executive functions and t

Beauty: soul or surface?

It is proposed that beauty can be external or internal or both. External or physical beauty is immediately visible. Internal or inner beauty is not always immediately visible. Ideally both types of beauty are connected and spring from one another. The opposite situation, in which only one exists while the other is suppressed, is exemplified in this paper, using a tale from 19th century Croatian literature as a model. The main character is Tena. Initially physically beautiful, she is later disfigured by smallpox. Consequently her psyche metamorphoses through illness, distress and destitution, a

Education of psychiatry in Japan.

This paper discusses the problems of Japanese under- and postgraduate education of psychiatry, and indicates several important points for psychiatric education. Most medical schools give lectures on psychiatry to fourth and fifth graders. Lecturing hours average 2.3% of the total lecture time for medical students. However, the hours have tended to decrease recently, and lectures by the Department of Psychiatry are spreading to the first and second graders. These lectures include behavioral science, psychology and science for human relationships. The following problems should be solved urgently

Psychosocial factors in gastrointestinal illness.

Gastrointestinal (GI) illnesses represent a paradigm of psychosomatic medicine. Nearly half of patients seen in GI practice present with functional illnesses, and patients commonly complain of symptoms that have coexisting organic and functional etiologies. This chapter addresses the connected nature of psychosocial factors and GI function, disease and outcome in the context of the biopsychosocial model, which allows illness to be examined from the encompassing perspective of interacting system, from the cellular to the environmental. This perspective also helps explain why biologic events suc

Intrarectal bypass graft in low anterior resection and sigmoid obstruction--an experimental study.

The most common causes for morbidity and mortality in colorectal resections are anastomotic leaks. In low anterior resection, the incidence of anastomotic leakage ranges from 17 to 50%. With the use of the stapler technique, leakage incidence rate remains high and ranges from 10 to 25%. Colostomy formation and closures are associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. Due to the high incidence of anastomotic leakage rate in low anterior resection, and the additional complications of diverting colostomy formation and closure, the use of a rectal stent-intrarectal bypass graft has been i

Speech and Language Therapists' Views and Experiences of Working With People With Wernicke's Aphasia: A Qualitative Interview Study.

BACKGROUND: Wernicke's aphasia is a challenging communication disability to live with, characterised by fluent speech, impaired auditory comprehension and reduced self-monitoring. There is little literature addressing functional therapy approaches. For example, there is limited evidence for communication partner training (CPT) for this client group, despite research on its effectiveness more generally. It is not known how speech and language therapists (SLTs) understand and apply this limited and disparate evidence to their practice. AIMS: To explore how SLTs assess and treat people with Wern

Challenging gender-based & obstetric violence: Medical students' evolving perspectives in OBGYN care.

OBJECTIVE: Medical students undergo professional socialization during clinical rotations, which shapes their perceptions and responses to patient care. Obstetric and gender-based violence are pervasive issues in obstetrics and gynecology, where hierarchical dynamics may normalize unethical practices. Our study aimed to explore the perceptions, observations, learning experiences, and beliefs of students regarding gender-based and obstetric violence during their obstetrics and gynecology rotation in Mexico. METHODS: We used a mixed-methods design, incorporating a pre- and post-rotation question

Lack of a systematic approach and unified standards in frailty assessment among patients with gastric cancer: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Frailty is closely linked to gastric cancer outcomes, yet research on frailty assessment in this population remains fragmented. OBJECTIVE: To map frailty assessment practices in gastric cancer and identify gaps and priorities for research. METHODS: Following Arksey and O'Malley's framework and Joanna Briggs Institute guidance, we searched 15 Chinese and international databases from inception to 17 February 2026 without language restrictions. Data were charted descriptively and presented using tables and heatmaps. RESULTS: Seventy-four studies (2014-2025; total n = 90,856) were

A systematic review on the acceptability, perception, preference, comfort, and burdens associated with radiological investigations in Inflammatory Bowel Disease patients.

INTRODUCTION: The patient experience during diagnostic radiological procedures in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) management remains an underexplored aspect of healthcare delivery. Despite advancements in imaging technologies, understanding patient perspectives is critical to optimizing adherence, satisfaction, and overall outcomes. This systematic review aims to address existing gaps in knowledge by synthesizing evidence on the acceptability, perception, preference, comfort, and burden associated with radiological investigations in IBD. METHODS: A comprehensive systematic review was conduct

Lived experiences of patients with calciphylaxis (CALCI-E): a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Calciphylaxis is a rare, severe condition, mainly affecting people undergoing dialysis. It occurs when small arterioles within the skin become calcified causing painful skin lesions. There are currently no diagnostic tests or licensed treatments. This qualitative study explored patient experiences to identify opportunities to improve diagnosis and management of this challenging condition. METHODS: Participants were recruited between October 2023 and December 2024. A sample of 10-20 people was sought. Participants were eligible to take part if they lived in England or Wales and wer
