A Longitudinal Investigation of the Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Mental Health of Individuals with Pre-existing Severe Mental Illnesses.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with severe mental illnesses (SMI), including schizophrenia spectrum illnesses and affective disorders, may be at increased risk for negative mental health outcomes related to the COVID-19 pandemic. This study compared the severity of pre-pandemic symptoms and affective experiences to current symptoms to evaluate this possibility. METHODS: 148 individuals with SMI (92 with schizophrenia spectrum illnesses and 56 with affective disorders) were recruited from ongoing ecological momentary assessment studies that sampled day-to-day experiences and symptom severity prior to

How to help homeless youth suffering from first episode psychosis and substance use disorders? The creation of a new intensive outreach intervention team.

In Canada, about 6,000 youth are homeless every night, many of whom suffer from addiction and psychotic disorders. To facilitate the exit out of homelessness, access to care and to improve psychosis and addiction outcomes, a new intensive outreach intervention team (EQIIP SOL) was created in Montreal (2012). It offers intensive outreach services dedicated to homeless youth suffering from first episode psychosis and addiction (HYFEPA) in addition to an early psychosis intervention service (EIS) in collaboration with the Addiction Psychiatry Unit. Our aim is to describe the characteristics, clin…

Treating the Synapse in Major Psychiatric Disorders: The Role of Postsynaptic Density Network in Dopamine-Glutamate Interplay and Psychopharmacologic Drugs Molecular Actions.

Dopamine-glutamate interplay dysfunctions have been suggested as pathophysiological key determinants of major psychotic disorders, above all schizophrenia and mood disorders. For the most part, synaptic interactions between dopamine and glutamate signaling pathways take part in the postsynaptic density, a specialized ultrastructure localized under the membrane of glutamatergic excitatory synapses. Multiple proteins, with the role of adaptors, regulators, effectors, and scaffolds compose the postsynaptic density network. They form structural and functional crossroads where multiple signals, sta…

Exposure to environmental factors increases connectivity between symptom domains in the psychopathology network.

BACKGROUND: We investigated to what degree environmental exposure (childhood trauma, urbanicity, cannabis use, and discrimination) impacts symptom connectivity using both continuous and categorical measures of psychopathology. METHODS: Outcomes were continuous symptom dimensions of self-reported psychopathology using the Self-report Symptom Checklist-90-R in 3021 participants from The Early Developmental Stages of the Psychopathology (EDSP) study and binary DSM-III-R categories of mental disorders and a binary measure of psychotic symptoms in 7076 participants from The Netherlands Mental Heal

A synopsis of recent influential papers published in psychiatric journals (2010-2011) from the Arab world.

Six recent and influential papers that have appeared in the three leading psychiatry journals from the Arab region are summarized in this review. The first paper examined the prevalence of eating disorders (EDs) in rural and urban secondary school girls in Sharkia; more EDs were found among urban than rural population. The second study reported the high prevalence of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in primary school children in Iraq in context of the present situation in Iraq dominated by violence creating a traumatizing atmosphere for the population, especially children. The third paper

No association between neuregulin 1 and psychotic symptoms in Alzheimer's disease patients.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients commonly suffer from behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Variants within the neuregulin-1 (NRG1) gene have been investigated both in early onset psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia and recently in AD patients with psychosis. In this study, we analyzed NRG1 variants in AD patients with and without psychosis. Our large cohort of 399 probable AD patients had longitudinal information on the BPSD, which was used to dichotomize patients into whether they had ever suffered from psychotic symptoms within the study period. The NRG1 single

D-amino acid oxidase (DAO) genotype and mood symptomatology in schizophrenia.

A series of genetic studies have identified the D-amino acid oxidase (DAO) gene as potentially contributing to schizophrenia susceptibility. An interacting gene, D-amino acid oxidase activator (DAOA) has also been implicated and it has been suggested that variation at these genes may influence the efficiency of glutamate gating at N-methyl-D-aspartate-type (NMDA) receptors. However, recent data suggests that DAOA may influence susceptibility to mood episodes across the spectrum of psychotic disorders rather than contributing to a specific psychosis phenotype. The aim of this study was to deter…

New approaches to understanding hallucinations in Parkinson's disease: phenomenology and possible origins.

The authors review current literature on hallucinations in Parkinson's disease (PD). Recent neuropathological studies showed that hallucinations occur in synucleinopathies and are a significant predictor of Lewy Body depositions. Therefore, hallucinations are a hallmark of PD and of dementia with Lewy Bodies. Visual hallucinations are mostly complex and kinematic; preserved or disturbed insight on the nature of hallucinations is a major prognostic factor, although eventually all hallucinators will present with reduced insight. Current theories on the origin of hallucinations point to visual dy

Comparisons between psychosis samples with different patterns of substance use recruited for clinical and epidemiological studies.

Despite high rates of comorbid substance use disorders and smoking among people with psychotic disorders, previous studies have not examined differences in socio-demographic, clinical or disability characteristics between psychosis sub-groups with different patterns of substance use. This study compared the characteristics of five groups of people with psychosis and varying patterns of substance use (n=1152), including groups entering treatment studies for substance use or smoking, epidemiological samples of substance users and smokers, and people without such problems. Data were drawn from se…

Obesity as psychosomatic disease is a mass phenomenon. The number of obese males (BMI > 30) became doubled in the last ten years. In the etiology of obesity play an important role the reactive obesity. In the background of "yo-yo syndrome" often could be found depression, or other psychotic disorder. The low self-esteem, body dissatisfaction, tension, anxiety disorders is well-known in a slimming diet. Obese subjects (n = 29) who were admitted on their request with a view to losing weight were examined (Hamilton Depressive Scala, Hamilton Anxietas Scala, Eating Attitude Test) Physical Conditio

Belief in demons and exorcism in psychiatric patients in Switzerland.

Belief in demons as the cause of mental health problems is a well-known phenomenon in many cultures of the world. However, there is little literature on this phenomenon in Protestant subcultures of the West. The author conducted a systematic investigation of the prevalence of this attribution in 343 mainly Protestant out-patients of a psychiatric clinic in Switzerland, who described themselves as religious. Of these, 129 (37.6 per cent) believed in the possible causation of their problems through the influence of evil spirits, labelling this as 'occult bondage' or 'possession'. One hundred and

Structural connectivity associated with familial risk for mental illness: A meta-analysis of diffusion tensor imaging studies in relatives of patients with severe mental disorders.

Schizophrenia (SCZ), bipolar disorder (BD), and major depressive disorder (MDD) are heritable conditions with overlapping genetic liability. Transdiagnostic and disorder-specific brain changes associated with familial risk for developing these disorders remain poorly understood. We carried out a meta-analysis of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies to investigate white matter microstructure abnormalities in relatives that might correspond to shared and discrete biomarkers of familial risk for psychotic or mood disorders. A systematic search of PubMed and Embase was performed to identify DTI

From the urge to see one's own blood to the urge to drink it: Can hemomania be specified as an impulse control disorder? Two case reports.

At least half of self-mutilative individuals report that seeing their own blood is comforting, while a quarter report that they have tasted it. Bloodletting and blood-drinking behaviors have been discussed in case reports of disorders such as borderline personality disorder, bulimia nervosa, dissociative identity disorder, and psychotic disorder. The role of blood-drinking behavior, however, needs to be clarified in the psychiatric literature. This paper is the first to discuss blood-drinking behavior as a possible impulse control disorder that progresses from a desire to see or taste one's ow

Auditory steady state response in bipolar disorder: relation to clinical state, cognitive performance, medication status, and substance disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Abnormalities in auditory steady state response (ASSR) at gamma range frequencies have been found in bipolar disorder, but the relationship of these neurophysiological disturbances to clinical factors has not been well characterized. We therefore evaluated the ASSR in bipolar disorder and examined its sensitivity to clinical symptoms, cognitive function, and pharmacological treatment. METHODS: A total of 68 patients with bipolar disorder and 77 control participants were evaluated. Click trains presented at 20, 30, 40, and 50 Hz evoked ASSRs. Mean trial power (MTP) and phase lockin
