Absorbed dose and deterministic effects to patients from interventional neuroradiology.

Following the presentation of radiation-induced skin effects by three patients who had undergone glue embolisation of intracranial arteriovenous malformation (AVM), measurements were made of absorbed dose to the skin of patients undergoing other interventional neuroradiological procedures that involve long fluoroscopy times. The maximum absorbed dose to the skin measured by thermoluminescent dosemeters during these procedures was 4 Gy. From these measurements and from records of fluoroscopy time and the number of digital runs acquired, estimates of the maximum absorbed skin dose were made for

Paeoniflorin protects against radiation enteritis by suppressing YY1/ACSL4 axis to attenuate murine intestinal epithelial injury and ferroptosis.

BACKGROUND: Radiation enteritis (RE), an intestinal complication due to abdominal or pelvic radiotherapy, severely impacts patients' life and health. Paeoniflorin (PF), a water-soluble monoterpene glycoside, is reported to relieve RE, but its molecular mechanism needs further exploration. Thus, this study aims to clarify the molecular mechanism underlying PF's effect on RE. METHODS: An in vitro ionizing radiation (IR)-induced cell model was constructed. Subsequently, CCK-8, EdU, flow cytometry and relevant kits were applied to examine cellular behaviors and ferroptosis. Protein and mRNA expre

Estimation of effective dose and risk of exposure-induced cancer death, and diagnostic reference level for CT scans in Tabriz, Iran.

This study aimed to estimate the effective dose and the risk of exposure-induced cancer death (REID), as well as to establish diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) for common CT examinations conducted in Tabriz, Iran. The investigation included adult patients undergoing abdomen-pelvis, brain, neck, sinus, and chest CT scans. Patient data, exposure parameters, and radiation dose metrics, such as volume CT dose index (CTDIvol) and dose length product (DLP), were collected and analyzed. The results showed significant variations in radiation dose across different centers for the CT scans. The average

Radiotherapy opens the blood-brain barrier and synergizes with anlotinib in treating glioblastoma.

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma (GBM) has a poor prognosis and lacks effective treatment. Anlotinib is a multitargeted receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) that may have anti-tumor activity in the central nervous system (CNS). This study aimed to determine the therapeutic value of radiotherapy combined with anlotinib in GBM via preclinical research. METHODS: HPLC-MS/MS was used to assess the concentration of anlotinib in blood and brain samples. Cell proliferation assays, flow cytometry, and colony formation assays were performed in vitro. The potential value of anlotinib or in combination with

Mesenchymal stem cells limit vascular and epithelial damage and restore the impermeability of the urothelium in chronic radiation cystitis.

BACKGROUND: Cellular therapy seems to be an innovative therapeutic alternative for which mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been shown to be effective for interstitial and hemorrhagic cystitis. However, the action of MSCs on chronic radiation cystitis (CRC) remains to be demonstrated. The aim of this study was to set up a rat model of CRC and to evaluate the efficacy of MSCs and their mode of action. METHODS: CRC was induced by single-dose localized irradiation of the whole bladder using two beams guided by tomography in female Sprague-Dawley rat. A dose range of 20-80 Gy with follow-up 3-12

Combination treatment of TRAIL, DFMO and radiation for malignant glioma cells.

Tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) has shown potent and cancer-selective killing activity and drawn considerable attention as a promising therapy for cancer. Another promising cancer therapy is difluoromethylornithine (DFMO), an inhibitor of ornithine decarboxylase, which is oraly administered and well tolerated. Nevertheless, many types of cancer, including gliomas, have exhibited resistance to TRAIL-induced apoptosis and similarly the potency of DFMO should be enhanced to optimize therapeutic efficacy. In this study we sought to determine whether DFMO, in combina

The role of radiotherapy in the palliative treatment of gastrointestinal cancer.

Gastrointestinal malignancy is the second commonest cancer and is associated with a high mortality. Although definitive surgery could be offered for most tumour sites in the gastrointestinal tract, the majority of patients will still develop incurable recurrent or metastatic disease. Therefore, palliation is an important part of management. Radiotherapy has long been recognized as an effective palliative modality in gastrointestinal cancer. It was previously offered in cases where surgical resection was not feasible either due to the advanced nature of the disease or the presence of metastatic

Development of the rationale of a personalized cancer vaccine based on the in situ vaccine effect of radiotherapy: a mechanistic study of the POLARSTAR trial.

PURPOSE: Radiotherapy induces multiple forms of tumor cell death, including immunogenic cell death (ICD) like GSDME-mediated pyroptosis and MLKL-mediated necroptosis; and ICD has been increasingly accepted as a crucial element leading to enhanced anti-tumor adaptive immunity. We aim to clarify whether a vaccine-like effect is intrinsic for radiation-induced tumor cell death, and to explore potential applications. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was performed to validate the synergism between clinical radiotherapy and PD1 blockade in patients with resectable rectal cancer. Colorectal ca

Oncolytic virotherapy promotes radiosensitivity in soft tissue sarcoma by suppressing anti-apoptotic MCL1 expression.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Soft tissue sarcoma (STS) is a rare cancer that develops from soft tissues in any part of the body. Despite major advances in the treatment of STS, patients are often refractory to conventional radiotherapy, leading to poor prognosis. Enhancement of sensitivity to radiotherapy would therefore improve the clinical outcome of STS patients. We previously revealed that the tumor-specific, replication-competent oncolytic adenovirus OBP-301 kills human sarcoma cells. In this study, we investigated the radiosensitizing effect of OBP-301 in human STS cells. The in vitro antitumor effect of OBP-301 and

Radiation exposure during videofluoroscopic swallowing studies in young children.

OBJECTIVES: Swallowing difficulties are best assessed by videofluoroscopic swallowing studies (VFSS). However, limiting radiation exposure is important, especially in young children. The purpose was to evaluate radiation dose in young children during VFSS, and to investigate factors associated with it. METHODS: Children with swallowing difficulty who underwent VFSS from February 2012 to July 2014 were recruited. Dose area product (DAP) and screening time were offered by the fluoroscopy machine, and effective dose was calculated from the DAP using a conversion coefficient published by the Nati

Stress-inducible DNA repair in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae shows altered radiation response under various stress conditions, such as nutrition depletion, nitrogen starvation, osmotic shock, heat shock, and mild chemical treatments. In general, the cells show higher levels of UV or gamma radiation resistance under the stress. However, not all the stress conditions affect the repair system in the same manner. For example, depletion of nitrogen supply in the growth medium has been shown to enhance the repair of gamma ray-induced DNA damage without significantly affecting the UV response of the cells. On the other hand, a mild tre

Intracellular cysteine and glutathione delivery systems.

Glutathione functions in catalysis, metabolism, transport, and reductive processes and in protection of cells by destruction of free radicals, reactive oxygen intermediates, and other toxic compounds of endogenous and exogenous origin. It also functions as a storage and transport form of cysteine. Depletion of glutathione (effectively accomplished by inhibition of its synthesis) increases sensitivity to radiation and to certain toxic compounds and is of value in combination with radiation therapy or chemotherapy in situations in which cell selectivity can be achieved. Increased cellular levels

Topical AC-11 abates actinic keratoses and early squamous cell cancers in hairless mice exposed to Ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation.

AC-11 is an aqueous extract of the botanical, Uncaria tomentosa, which has a variety of effects that enhance DNA repair and down regulate inflammation. AC-11 is essentially free of oxindole alkaloids (< 0.05%, w/w) but contains more than 8% carboxy alkyl esters (CAEs) as their active ingredients. Three groups of 10 outbred SK-1 hairless or SK-II hairless strains of mice each were treated with AC-11 at 0.5%, 1.5%, and 3.0% in a non-irritating, dye-free, perfume-free, and fragrance-free vanishing cream vehicle. Ten mice used vehicle only and 10 were untreated. Each concentration of AC-11 and

Sucralfate for radiation mucositis: results of a double-blind randomized trial.

PURPOSE: To determine if addition of the ulcer-coating polysaccharide sucralfate could improve symptomatic relief of radiation mucositis over a popular combination of antacid, diphenhydramine, and viscous lidocaine alone. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A double-blind study was conducted in which nurses and pharmacists coded patient groups and distributed medication in a manner blinded to both the patients and physicians. Eligible patients receiving radiation to the head and neck and/or chest sites that included the esophagus were randomized to a standard combination of antacid, diphenhydramine, and v

Superior orbital 'petrositis' and late ischaemic monocular blindness induced by intense UV radiation exposure.

Many physical agents cause neuropathies. The most common are chronic pressure, vibration and temperature. In general, these lesions occur at work, as a result of accidents or through chronic exposure to the physical agent. Radiation leading to peripheral neuropathy is also related to radiotherapy in cancer treatment, as an undesirable side-effect. We present here a case report of short, intense UV radiation exposure at work, leading to delayed-onset ocular neuropathy. A clear cause-effect relationship is shown, demonstrated using magnetic resonance imaging scans. We suggest that the mechanism

[Experience in treating the victims of the accident at the Chernobyl Atomic Electric Power Station and the immediate disease outcomes].

The paper is concerned with the results of therapy of 115 patients with acute radiation syndrome after the Chernobyl accident. The chief methods of the effective therapy of bone marrow syndrome are antimicrobial drugs and fresh donor platelet mass transfusions. Hemopoietic stem cell transplantation (allogenic bone marrow or embryonic hepatocytes) is indicated and effective in a very limited number of patients in accident irradiation. Severe beta-burns of the skin remain an unsolved problem as a result of their spreading. Organizational principles of therapy of a great number of patients with a

The loss of antibiotic activity of ciprofloxacin by photodegradation.

Solutions of ciprofloxacin were irradiated with different wavebands of ultraviolet and visible radiation and the antibiotic activity of the drug was determined against Escherichia coli. A wavelength dependent loss of antibiotic activity was found with maximal effect around 320 nm; no effect occurred with visible irradiation. The degree of the decrease in activity with longer wavelength ultraviolet (UVA) radiation was sufficient to indicate that human exposure to sunlight through window glass (greater than 320 nm) or UVA from tanning sunbeds may result in a significant reduction in both cutaneo

Reanalysis of cancer mortality using reconstructed organ-absorbed dose: J-EPISODE 1991‒2010.

The Japanese Epidemiological Study on Low-Dose Radiation Effects (J-EPISODE) has been conducted since 1990 by the Radiation Effects Association to analyse health effects for nuclear workers. It uses the recorded doses, i.e. dosimeter readings, evaluated inHp(10) for estimation of radiation risk; however, the International Commission on Radiological Protection does not recommend the use of effective doses for epidemiological evaluation and instead recommends the use of organ-absorbed doses for assessing cancer risk. Recently, the J-EPISODE has developed a conversion factor that can convert dosi…
