Protein aggregation causes a wide range of neurodegenerative diseases. Targeting and removing aggregates, but not the functional protein, is a considerable therapeutic challenge. Pathologic aggregation and prion-like propagation of α-synuclein (α-syn) are the hallmarks of Parkinson's disease (PD). Emerging evidence shows that type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a risk factor for PD. Interestingly, T2DM is characterized by the amyloid deposition of islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) in the pancreas. Tissue contractures are processes of cell-mediated contraction, irreversible in nature and typically associated with fibrotic phenomena. This study recruited four sociocentric networks (n = 156) of men who have sex with men in Budapest, Hungary, and St. Petersburg, Russia.
