Role of collective self-esteem on youth violence in a collective culture.

Youth violence involvement has always been the focus of significant research attention. However, as most of the studies on youth violence have been conducted in Western cultures, little is known about the antecedents of violence in the Asian context. Researchers have suggested that collectivism might be the reason for the lower violent crime rates in Asia. Nevertheless, the present study proposes an alternative approach to the collectivistic orientation and violence relationship: The possibility that allocentrism (collectivist tendency at the individual difference level) might shape the meanin

Psychometric validation of gender nonspecific sexual confidence and sexual relationship scales in men and women.

INTRODUCTION: The Sexual Confidence Scale (SCS) and the Sexual Relationship Scale (SRS) are two new measures designed for use by men and women across sexual dysfunction groups. The SCS assesses how confident an individual feels as a sexual partner, while the SRS assesses feelings that an individual has about their sexual relationship with their partner. AIM: To conduct item reduction and psychometric validation of the SCS and SRS instruments. METHODS: To validate the new measures, 104 men with premature ejaculation (PE), 101 men with erectile dysfunction (ED) and 106 women with female sexual

An intensive case analysis of client metacognition in a good-outcome psychotherapy: Lisa's case.

The authors analyzed the successful case of Lisa, a client with major depression, using the Metacognitive Assessment Scale (MAS). Consistently with the literature on depression, the authors hypothesize that Lisa's ability to reflect on mental states--here metacognition--is marginally affected. The authors found that Lisa was better at describing her own mind rather than understanding the mind of the others. Furthermore, the most severe impairment was in using metacognition to cope with mental state source of distress and to enact strategies to solve interpersonal problems. During the therapy s

Body attitudes in patients with eating disorders at presentation and completion of intensive outpatient day treatment.

Due to the importance of the distorted body experience in eating disorder diagnosis and treatment, we wanted to explore body attitudes of patients with eating disorders before and after 5 months of intensive specialized outpatient day treatment. We assessed 193 patients diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa (AN), Bulimia Nervosa (BN) and Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS) using the Body Attitude Test (BAT), Body Mass Index (BMI), Eating Disorder Evaluation Scale (EDES) and Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90). Eating disorder subtypes differed in BMI, total body attitudes and negative apprecia

'Make me normal': the views and experiences of pupils on the autistic spectrum in mainstream secondary schools.

The following article reviews literature pertaining to the association between child maltreatment and self-injury and the ways it varies according to maltreatment type. Research supporting various mediators of the relations between different maltreatment types and self-injury is summarized. Informing mediator models, dominant theories of functionality, particularly affect regulation theories, are summarized and granted empirical support. Following from explanations of its functionality, three developmental pathways (regulatory, representational/interpersonal, and reactive/neurobiological) lead

Disrupted lives, fragmented care: illness experiences of criminalized women.

Thirty-three women recently released from a Massachusetts correctional facility were included in a qualitative study, carried out between January and July 2007, in which semi-structured, open-ended, individual interviews were conducted. The women described lives repeatedly disrupted, typically by sexual and physical violence, and then again by homelessness, joblessness, bad relationships, loss of their children, legal troubles, fractured physical and mental health, and fragmented medical attention by a large, disjointed variety of providers and facilities. This article argues that rather than

[Analysis of psychosocial changes following ear reconstruction with rib cartilage - development of a short test].

BACKGROUND: The improvement of psychosocial well being in patients with microtia after ear reconstruction with rib cartilage is mainly assessed clinically. There are first prospective studies with established psychological questionnaires showing promising results but these tests are too extensive for everyday-use in clinical routine. Therefore, we examined a self-designed short version for the specific use in the head-neck-region. METHODS AND PATIENTS: The clinically established psychological questionnaire "Frankfurter Selbstkonzeptskalen/FSKN" consists of 78 items for self-assessment of perf

[The actual image of male patients with paranoid schizophrenia in perception of the patients themselves and their parents].

AIM: The aim of this study was to answer following questions: Does the self-image of male schizophrenics differ from the image their parents have? Do parents judge their sons more negatively or more positively than they themselves do? Are opinions of the mothers and fathers different or consistent? METHODS: 30 unmarried male patients with paranoid schizophrenia (diagnosis based on ICD-10) were included in the study. All subjects lived with their parental families. In all cases, families were complete. Subjects were aged 18-23 (x = 23.23). The mean time of duration of disease was 2.37 (range 0

Depressive symptoms and baseline prefrontal EEG alpha activity: a study utilizing Ecological Momentary Assessment.

Prefrontal cortex (PFC) electroencephalography (EEG) alpha asymmetry has been found in individuals with major depression. However, EEG activity has never been examined in regard to specific depressive symptoms. We examine the relationship between resting baseline PFC alpha activity and both rumination and self-esteem in a depressed outpatient group (N=6) and a healthy control group (N=7) using high-density EEG sampling and multiple longitudinal self report measures, i.e. Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA). Symptom measures were collected five times daily for 7 days, i.e. 35 assessments. Usi

Support for the predictive validity of the SASC-R: linkages with reactions to an in vivo peer evaluation manipulation.

The present study examined the predictive validity of the Social Anxiety Scale for Children-Revised (SASC-R) by investigating associations between children's social anxiety symptoms and their cognitive and behavioral reactions in response to an in vivo peer evaluation manipulation. Participants (N=115) ages 10-13, played a computer game based on the television show Survivor and were randomized to either a peer rejection (i.e., receiving the lowest total 'likeability' score from a group of peer-judges), a peer success (i.e., receiving the highest score), or a neutral peer feedback condition. Spontaneous imagery in women with bulimia nervosa: an investigation into content, characteristics and links to childhood memories.

The study investigated the presence and characteristics of spontaneous imagery in women with bulimia nervosa (BN) and their links to childhood memories. Using a semi-structured interview, data was collected from three groups of female participants: BN participants (N=13), dieting (N=18) and non-dieting controls (N=20). BN participants reported more spontaneous images than non-dieting control participants. Their images were recurrent and significantly more negative and anxiety provoking than those of controls. They involved more sensory modalities than in dieting controls and were more vivid th

Defective reproduction of passive meaningless gestures in right brain damage: a perceptual disorder of one's own body knowledge?

Right Hemisphere Damaged Patients (RHDP) with left hemiparesis are known to experience motor programming difficulties and to have poorer functional outcome when compared with Left Hemisphere Damaged Patients (LHDP). The role played by body-related cognitive disorders remains unclear. In this study we investigate whether reproduction of passive meaningless gestures may contribute to a further development of this question. Ten RHDP with neglect, 10 RHDP without neglect, 10 LHDP, and 10 controls were given a battery of tasks requiring reproduction of passive meaningless gestures. The gestures wer

A hermeneutic phenomenological analysis of aging with a childhood onset disability.

In this qualitative study, we combined multiple interviews, field notes, life history review charts, and demographic questions to explore the life course experiences of 25 women, ages 55 to 65 years, who developed impairments due to paralytic polio during childhood. Based on a hermeneutic phenomenological methodology using thematic analysis, multiple themes emerged that traced their lives from childhood to later adulthood. The women described how they pushed their bodies and dismissed their physical decline as long as possible. The women's early experiences combined with the culturally defined

Emotional distress in infertile women in Kuwait.

OBJECTIVES: Although previous studies conducted in the Western countries have reported that psychological factors are implicated in the experience of infertility, no study has assessed this relationship in Arab women. We postulate that with all important causal "confounders" such as age, gender, education and general health status controlled, any significant difference in psychological profile can be attributed to infertility. METHODS: An Arabic version of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was used to examine the psychological status of 120 Kuwaiti infertile women and an age-ma

The relationship between automatic thoughts and negative emotions in children and adolescents: a test of the cognitive content-specificity hypothesis.

The aim of this study was to test the cognitive content-specificity hypothesis in children and adolescents aged 7-16 years. Participants consisted of a community sample of 200 youth and a clinical sample of 160 youth with anxiety, depressive, or disruptive behavior disorders. Participants completed several self-report measures assessing a wide range of negative beliefs and symptoms of internalizing and externalizing problems. Multivariate analyses examining the interrelationships between beliefs and noncognitive symptoms revealed that thoughts on loss or personal failure were the strongest pre

Factors associated with self-worth in young people with physical disabilities.

Having a positive sense of self is associated with success for children and adults, with and without disabilities. This article reports on a cross-sectional study examining the correlates of global self-worth for 85 young people (ages eight to 23) with spina bifida (a condition present at birth) or spinal cord injury (an acquired condition). Significant correlations were found between perceptions of self-worth and age, perceived social support of close friends, and perceived social support from parents. Regression analysis revealed that perceived social support from parents was a stronger pred

Vaginal spasm, pain, and behavior: an empirical investigation of the diagnosis of vaginismus.

This study investigated the roles of vaginal spasm, pain, and behavior in vaginismus and the ability of psychologists, gynecologists, and physical therapists to agree on a diagnosis of vaginismus. Eighty-seven women, matched on age, relationship status, and parity, were assigned to one of three groups: vaginismus, dyspareunia resulting from vulvar vestibulitis syndrome (VVS), and no pain with intercourse. Diagnostic agreement was poor for vaginismus; vaginal spasm and pain measures did not differentiate between women in the vaginismus and dyspareunia/VVS groups; however, women in the vaginismu
