Effects of Parental Involvement on Glycemic Control in Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: A Scoping Review.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is typically diagnosed in pediatric patients. Transitioning from supported management in childhood to self-management in adolescence is an important step. Parental psychosocial influence is a possible factor in adolescents' disease control. This review summarized the effects of parental involvement on glycemic control in adolescents with T1DM by focusing on hemoglobin A1c (HgbAIc). A scoping review per the Guidance for Systematic Scoping Reviews was conducted with the following inclusion criteria: (a) studies in English, (b) focused on adolescents with T1DM, (c)…

Passenger Lymphocyte Syndrome as a rare cause of hemolysis in a patient after small intestine transplantation, A case report and review of the literature.

Passenger lymphocyte syndrome (PLS) is a well-described phenomenon causing immune hemolytic anemia, mostly in non-ABO identical transplantations. The syndrome occurs when donor lymphocytes produce antibodies against the recipient's red blood cells. Although the syndrome is usually self-limited, further management with blood transfusions, immunosuppression, or plasmapheresis might be needed. A 23-year-old female with AB+ blood group underwent small intestine transplantation from a deceased donor with O+ blood group. She received rituximab, thymoglobin, and methylprednisolone as immunosuppressiv

[Functional cardiovascular symptoms].

This review provides an update on the diagnosis, differential diagnosis and management of functional cardiovascular symptoms. Typical heart-related symptoms like non-cardiac chest pain and palpitations are frequently complemented by other symptoms like dyspnea, sweating, trembling, dizziness and also further somatic symptoms like pain and fatigue. Functional cardiac symptoms are frequent, with rates of up to 30 % in chest pain units. The differential diagnosis comprises gastrointestinal disorders like gastro-esophageal reflux disease and also mental disorders, particularly panic and other anxi

External hydrocephalus associated with dural sigmoid sinus arteriovenous fistula: a case report.

External hydrocephalus (EH) is a recognised sub-type of hydrocephalus associated with macrocephaly in infancy. EH is characterised by the enlargement of subarachnoid spaces (so-called subarachnomegaly) with a normal ventricular system on brain imaging. EH is traditionally considered benign and self-limiting, yet its pathophysiology remains puzzling. Mounting evidence for an association between EH and hydrovenous disorders reshapes our understanding of this condition and its management. To our knowledge, we report the first association between EH and dural arteriovenous fistula (dAVF) in a 17-m

Continuous glucose monitoring in cystic fibrosis - A practical guide.

Our ability to monitor blood glucose levels has become increasingly accurate over the last few decades. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology now allows providers and patients the ability to monitor glucose levels retrospectively as well as in real-time for diabetes management. CGM also provides the ability to study glucose patterns and trends for insight into the pathophysiology and natural history of disease. CGM captures a more complete picture of glucose profiles than traditional measures of glycemia such as the hemoglobin A1c or self-monitoring of blood glucose levels. This artic

Complementary and alternative medicine in epistaxis: a point worth considering during the patient's history.

A large number of patients take complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for a variety of reasons, but most do not inform their physicians. This has implications for safety, as many forms of herbal CAM are thought to have a variety of side-effects and may interact with conventional medicines with potentially adverse consequences. We present the case of an otherwise healthy 25-year-old man with difficult-to-control epistaxis. On further questioning, we learnt that he had recently started self-medicating with a combination of aspirin, garlic tablets and milk thistle. Garlic increases bleedin

Performance of technical skills of diabetes management: increased independence after a camp experience.

This study examines some educational effects of a camp experience on independent performance of tasks in the management of diabetes mellitus. One hundred and eleven children were studied with regard to insulin administration, urine glucose testing, recognition of hypoglycemic reactions, adherence to diet, and over-all independence. There was a significant increase in independent measurement of insulin dose, administration of insulin injections, and urine glucose testing. No significant differences were seen in dietary adherence of ability to recognize hypoglycemic reactions. Precamp data indic

When emotional intelligence measures disagree: discordant profiles in allied health students and why classification uncertainty matters.

INTRODUCTION: Emotional intelligence (EI) is widely studied in health professions education, but two methodological habits limit the field: EI is usually treated as a single continuous predictor, and person-centered studies typically assign students to profiles and then test associations as though those assignments were certain. We addressed both issues, and a third that emerged from our own data: the validity of the profile solution itself. METHODS: Allied health sciences undergraduates at Kuwait University completed two self-report EI measures: the Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence

Exploring predictors of low nutritional literacy in maintenance hemodialysis patients: a machine learning and network analysis approach.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) commonly experience substantial self-care challenges due to the complexity and highly restrictive nature of their treatment regimens. Nutritional literacy is a critical determinant of effective self-management in this population. However, the main predictors of low nutritional literacy and their relationships remain unclear, limiting early targeted interventions. This study aimed to identify important predictors of low nutritional literacy in MHD patients and to explore how these predictors relate to each other. METHODS: This stud…

Surface Temperatures of Self-Warming Chemical Blankets Exceed Established Safety Thresholds: A Standardized Bench-Testing Study.

INTRODUCTION: Self-warming chemical blankets are widely deployed in military, prehospital, and hospital settings as a power-independent warming solution. Despite widespread use, no harmonized safety standard governing surface temperature limits for this device class is known to exist, and independent bench-testing data are sparse. This study aimed to characterize the thermal performance and safety profiles of commercially available self-warming chemical blankets and evaluate their suitability for use in military, prehospital, and perioperative contexts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four self-warmin

Experiences of Adults With Type 1 Diabetes Using Digital Health Technology for Diabetes Self-Care: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Type 1 diabetes is a constraining disease due to the burden of its management, and diabetes outcome largely depends on the effectiveness of diabetes self-care. Digital health technology (DHT), which includes continuous glucose monitoring, insulin delivery devices, and related mobile health apps, can support diabetes self-care and thereby improve diabetes outcomes. In literature, experiences with the use of DHT vary widely among people with diabetes and are a less studied area among adults with type 1 diabetes. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to explore experiences of using DHT for diab

Dual harm among patients in the Ontario forensic mental health system.

BACKGROUND: Dual harm involves the unfortunate experience of harm to self and others/objects. Safeguarding individuals in forensic psychiatric settings against all forms of harm to self and others is sacrosanct. While understanding dual harm is crucial in the care and rehabilitation of patients in forensic psychiatric settings, only a few studies have explored this phenomenon. This study examined dual harm and its associated clinical and sociodemographic factors among forensic patients in Ontario, Canada. METHODS: In this retrospective study, we used data from the Ontario Review Board (ORB) (

Self-Induced Traumatic Macroglossia: Case Report and Literature Review.

Traumatic macroglossia is an extremely rare condition characterized by a sudden edematous swelling of the tongue due to trauma. We report a rare case of traumatic macroglossia in a 37-year-old male with known trisomy 21 and epilepsy who presented to the emergency room with a huge protruded tongue due to aggressive behavior and a history of multiple tongue tractions, leading to sudden severe tongue swelling without any respiratory distress symptoms. The examination was unremarkable; fixable nasolaryngoscopy relieved bilateral vocal cord movement, and there was no laryngeal edema. The patient wa

Urologic management of spina bifida.

The urologist plays an important role in the multidisciplinary team of physicians who provide care for patients with spina bifida. We review common strategies for managing the urinary tract in these patients. The primary objective in all phases of life is protecting kidney function by minimizing bladder hostility and establishing a good capacity, low-pressure urinary reservoir. Ensuring adequate bladder and bowel continence is also paramount for enhancing self-esteem and independence. Medical therapy incorporating clean intermittent catheterization and antimuscarinic medication is the cornerst

Current practice: diagnosis and treatment in primary healthcare.

In a primary healthcare facility, there are certain 'rules of thumb' that can be recommended for the diagnosis and treatment of conjunctivitis. The type of discharge is a crucial factor in the differential diagnosis and can also be a clue towards the management in primary care. It is important to identify whether the conjunctivitis is an isolated case or part of another disease, and if it is acute or chronic, and I would suggest taking a smear or culture sample whenever possible. When the aetiology is not clear, I would try antibiotics. If the patient is allergic, and an allergic conjunctiviti

Management of burns of the penis.

Burns of the penis can be physically and psychologically devastating. This is particularly true in young pediatric patients who have to content with growth as well as with the trials of adolescence and the development of self-image. Little has been written on the grafting management of these injuries. This report reviews a management technique used with great success. Ten patients who sustained full-thickness penis burns were reviewed. The grafting technique consisted of excision and grafting with sheet grafts in a one- or two-stage setting. After grafting, the penis was placed in traction wit
