Magnetic resonance imaging guided biopsy of musculoskeletal lesions.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive interventional biopsy procedures have the advantages of accurate localization, small incisions, and rapid recovery. The purpose of this study was to clinically test and evaluate the efficacy of the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guidance techniques for obtaining musculoskeletal biopsies using the appropriate imaging modalities and instruments. METHODS: We used MRI-compatible biopsy needles from the Invivo Bone Biopsy Set (Daum, Germany), and a 1.5-T closed-magnet MRI scanner was used to perform the MRI-guided biopsy. The pulse sequences included fast spin echo

Upper extremity injuries in Danish children aged 6-12, mechanisms, and risk factors.

Although injuries to the upper extremity are most costly, the picture of the upper extremity injury problem remains incomplete. This study is the first to describe the etiology and mechanisms of upper extremity injuries in Danish children. A 2.5-year observational prospective cohort study was conducted to record upper extremity injuries in 1048 children. Data were weekly collected by sending a text message. A total of 176 upper extremity injuries were reported (128 acute injuries). Of the acute upper extremity injuries, 55% were sprains, 47% occurred in the hand/wrist, and 53% of cases were ca

Risk factors associated with the occurrence of proximal humerus fractures in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: a custom strategy for preventing proximal humerus fractures.

To our knowledge, no prior report focused on the risk factors for proximal humerus fractures in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between potential risk factors and the occurrence of proximal humerus fractures in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. A total of 11,907 patients with rheumatoid arthritis were enrolled in our observational cohort rheumatoid arthritis study between 2000 and 2012. Self-reported proximal humerus fractures were verified using the patients' medical records. Cox proportional hazard models were used to analyze th

Customized 3D-Printed Resurfacing Arthroplasty for the Treatment of Severely Malunited Distal Humerus Associated With Posttraumatic Elbow Stiffness: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic elbow stiffness together with severe bony deformity of the distal humerus poses a great challenge for elbow surgery specialists. For young and high-demand patients suffering from grievous bony deformity but with no/mild joint degeneration, total elbow arthroplasty is not a suitable option, and hemiarthroplasty often results in a significant amount of bone stock loss, making it difficult to perform a revision procedure. Resurfacing arthroplasty has been applied in the shoulder, hip, and knee joints, as well as the radiocapitellar joint. However, resurfacing arthroplast

The Boyd approach: a valuable alternative to treating simple to complex elbow fractures and dislocations.

BACKGROUND: The Boyd approach is a single-incision posterior approach to the proximal radius and ulna based on a lateral anconeus muscle reflection and release of the lateral collateral ligamentous complex. This approach remains a lesser-used technique following early reports of proximal radioulnar synostosis and postoperative elbow instability. Although limited by small case series, recent literature does not support these early reported complications. This study presents a single surgeon's outcomes using the Boyd approach for the treatment of simple to complex elbow injuries. METHODS: Follo

COVID-19 Vaccine-Induced Parsonage-Turner Syndrome: A Case Report and Literature Review.

All modern vaccines share the risk of neurological adverse effects. Only a few cases of Parsonage-Turner syndrome (PTS), an uncommon peripheral nerve condition associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) immunization, have been reported to date. We describe a case of COVID-19 vaccine-induced PTS and provide a brief literature review. A 78-year-old male non-smoker with a medical history of coronary artery disease presented with non-exertional, constant chest pain for one hour and new onset of bilateral hand weakness for three days. He had no neurological disease or allergies and denied

Short Versus Regular Periods of Cast Immobilization for Distal Radial Fractures: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

The current research on the recommended durations for cast immobilization in adults with distal radial fractures (DRFs) lacks a clear consensus or definitive conclusion. The standard practice involves casting immobilization for five to six weeks. The debate revolves around the potential benefits of shorter periods (three to four weeks) without compromising patient outcomes. While previous research has delved into this subject through systematic reviews, our study stands out by conducting a meta-analysis, aiming for a more precise understanding of whether short or regular cast immobilization du

Common cycling injuries. Management and prevention.

The increasing participation in the athletic forms of bicycling warrants expanded physician attention to the traumatic and overuse injuries experienced by cyclists. The modern bicycle consists of a frame with various components, including handlebars, brakes, wheels, pedals, and gears, in various configurations for the various modes of cycling. For high performance cycling the proper fit of the bicycle is critical. The most efficient method to provide an accurate fit is the Fitkit, but proper frame selection and adjustment can be made by following simple guidelines for frame size, seat height,

Fast pitch softball injuries.

The popularity of fast pitch softball in the US and throughout the world is well documented. Along with this popularity, there has been a concomitant increase in the number of injuries. Nearly 52% of cases qualify as major disabling injuries requiring 3 weeks or more of treatment and 2% require surgery. Interestingly, 75% of injuries occur during away games and approximately 31% of traumas occur during nonpositional and conditioning drills. Injuries range from contusions and tendinitis to ligamentous disorders and fractures. Although head and neck traumas account for 4 to 12% of cases, upper e
