Identifying facilitators and barriers to culturally responsive communication for racial, ethnic, sexual, and gender minoritized patients when screened for COVID-19 vaccinations: A scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Racial, ethnic, sexual, and gender minoritized groups are considered historically excluded groups and have been disproportionately affected by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The influence of social determinants of health (SDOH), including access to screening and treatment, and other systemic and structural factors are largely responsible for these disparities. Primary care practitioner (PCP) competence in culturally responsive screening practices will be critical to reducing the impact of systemic and structural factors serving as barriers to screening and trea

Living after acute kidney injury: understanding the physical and psychosocial consequences.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is increasingly recognized as a condition with important long-term consequences, beyond kidney specific outcomes. This review addresses the growing population of AKI survivors and the need to better understand outcomes that matter to patients, which are often underrepresented in current care models. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies show that AKI survivors are at increased risk of recurrent AKI, progression to chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular events, rehospitalization, and mortality. Beyond these outcomes, accumulating evidence demonstrates a h

Artificial intelligence addiction among university students in China: risk stratification, consequences, and exercise-based intervention.

With the deep integration of artificial intelligence into daily life, AI-addiction-like tendencies have emerged as a potential form of behavioral dependency among university students. Focusing on high-frequency AI users on campus, this study examined risk stratification of problematic AI use, real-life impacts, and the preliminary pre-post improvements following exercise-based interventions. A cross-sectional survey assessed AI usage patterns and functional impacts, identifying a substantial proportion of students with at least mild risk of problematic AI use. Problematic AI use was associated

Who's really in the loop? Rethinking oversight in AI-assisted health care.

Human-in-the-loop oversight is widely invoked as a safeguard against potential harm from artificial intelligence (AI) used in health care, yet it functions more as symbolic reassurance than substantive protection. We argue that human-in-the-loop fails for three interconnected reasons: AI used in health care can amplify existing structural inequities at unprecedented scale, intersectional harms elude detection by oversight models premised on neutral singular reviewers, and clinicians operate under constraints that preclude meaningful interrogation of algorithmic outputs. Drawing on actor-networ

Adolescent Attachment and Peer Relationships: The Distinct Mediating Roles of Affective and Cognitive Empathy.

While attachment security is known to foster social competence, the mechanisms linking specific attachment dimensions to adolescent peer relationships remain underexplored. This study examined whether empathic concern (affective empathy) and perspective-taking (cognitive empathy) mediated the associations between attachment avoidance and anxiety in the maternal domain and peer relationship quality. A total of 912 late adolescents (550 females) completed the Experiences in Close Relationships-Relationship Structures Questionnaire (maternal domain), the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, and the Fr

Beyond the bench: Sociotechnical barriers to ergonomic change among interventional cardiology clinicians.

BACKGROUND: In high-volume image-guided procedural suites, clinicians work in constrained spaces requiring frequent twisting, reaching, and bending, contributing to fatigue and long-term musculoskeletal strain. OBJECTIVE: Within a broader evaluation of an over-the-patient worktable designed to improve procedural posture and reduce physical strain, this qualitative study examined how interventional cardiologists understand physical discomfort as part of their work and professional identity. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine clinicians (1 female) at a quaternary care

The convergence of health system, climate, and social pathways in Malawi's 2022-2024 cholera outbreak - A qualitative assessment.

Climate-related disasters increase cholera risks, yet their contribution to outbreaks is often explained through microbiological, epidemiological or ecological lenses, limiting our understanding of system convergence. Examining the 2022-2024 cholera outbreak in Malawi, we explore how healthcare providers in two rural districts perceived the interconnected pathways that transformed a seasonal cholera outbreak into a two-year epidemic. Drawing from field visits in Neno and Chikwawa Districts of Malawi, we conducted 24 in-depth semi-structured interviews with first responders. We identified three

Health Inequities in Pancreatic Disorders in the Black/African American Community.

Pancreatic diseases, such as acute pancreatitis (AP), chronic pancreatitis (CP), and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), disproportionately affect Black/African American (AA) communities in the United States, leading to high incidence, prevalence, and mortality rates. This paper outlines disparities in pancreatic diseases among AAs and explores contributing factors beyond individual biology and behavior, emphasizing the role of social determinants of health (SDoH), including poor access to healthcare, lack of inclusion in research studies, and other crucial systemic and structural factors

Editorial: The Value of and Need for School Mental Health Services.

The United States has an overburdened and fragmented mental health services system. Because of challenges in accessing care, the needs of most adolescents experiencing psychiatric disorders go unmet.1 Schools play an important role in filling gaps in services and, for many youth, schools are the first-and often the only-point of access for mental health services. School-based mental health services are particularly important for adolescents in low-income families or living in urban neighborhoods, who, because of social and structural factors, are more likely to report psychiatric symptoms and

Delayed structural maturation of inner hair cell ribbon synapses in a mouse model of fragile X syndrome.

Clinical features of the fragile X syndrome (FXS) phenotype include intellectual disability, repetitive behaviors, social communication deficits, and, commonly, auditory hypersensitivity to acoustic stimuli. Electrophysiological studies have shown that FXS patients and Fmr1KO mice exhibit improper processing of auditory information in the cortical areas of the brain and the spiral ganglion of the cochlea. Synapses formed by spiral ganglion neurons on sensory hair cells (HC) are the first connection on the path that conveys the auditory information from the sensory cells to the brain. We confir

Panic disorder in epilepsy.

A 51-year-old woman showed structural epilepsy following an atypical, nontraumatic intracranial hemorrhage in the right frontal area. Despite successful seizure control with lamotrigine, she developed severe morning anxiety and panic attacks, leading to agoraphobia, social withdrawal, and psychogenic nonepileptic seizures. Neuropsychiatric and psychological assessments confirmed an anxiety disorder with no significant symptoms of depression. The patient received various psychopharmacological treatments with limited success. This case report illustrates that managing panic disorder in patients

'Do they ever think about people like us?': The experiences of people with learning disabilities in England and Scotland during the COVID-19 pandemic.

People with learning disabilities in England and Scotland have experienced an increased risk of illness and death during the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on data of a longitudinal qualitative study with 71 disabled people and 31 disability organisations, this article examines the experiences of 24 people with learning disabilities in England and Scotland during the pandemic, reflecting on what rendered them vulnerable and placed them at risk. Qualitative interviews were conducted with participants and key informants at two timepoints; June-August 2020 and February-April 2021. Findings emerged ac

Utilization of HIV Prevention, Care, and Treatment Services Among Young Men Who Have Sex With Men and Transgender Persons of Color in the U.S. South: A Qualitative Analysis.

To better understand utilization of HIV prevention, care, and treatment services by young men who have sex with men (YMSM) and young transgender persons (YTG), of Black race or Hispanic/Latino/Latina ethnicity in the U.S. South, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 127 clients at one of four community based organizations (CBOs) in Miami, Atlanta, New Orleans/Baton Rouge, or Columbia, South Carolina. Across sites, the service that most commonly drew respondents into the CBO was HIV and STD testing. Other services commonly used included HIV/STI treatment, counseling services/support grou

Strategies for engaging transgender populations in HIV prevention and care.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Transgender (trans) populations are heavily impacted by HIV, yet face structural, social, and individual barriers to engagement in HIV prevention and care. In this review, we summarize the data on barriers and facilitators and discuss evidence-informed strategies to facilitate access to and engagement in HIV prevention and care by trans communities. RECENT FINDINGS: Intersectional stigma and discrimination at structural, community, individual levels present substantial impediments to HIV prevention and optimal care. Access to gender-affirming health care is a priority for t

A comparison of the different animal models of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and their use in studying complex behaviors.

Prenatal ethanol exposure (PNEE) has been linked to widespread impairments in brain structure and function. There are a number of animal models that are used to study the structural and functional deficits caused by PNEE, including, but not limited to invertebrates, fish, rodents, and non-human primates. Animal models enable a researcher to control important variables such as the route of ethanol administration, as well as the timing, frequency and amount of ethanol exposure. Each animal model and system of exposure has its place, depending on the research question being undertaken. In this re

How do women at risk of HIV/AIDS in Iran perceive gender norms and gendered power relations in the context of safe sex negotiations?

Sexual transmission of HIV/AIDS among women is growing in the Middle East region. Despite the fact that there are numerous gender-related sociocultural factors influencing HIV/AIDS protective behaviors, little gender-specificity is carried out in HIV prevention in Iran. In order to close this gap, we aimed to provide preliminary work that explored the perceptions that women at risk of HIV had about gender norms and gendered power and their ability to protect themselves against HIV/AIDS. Twenty-five semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with women at risk of HIV/AIDS, aged 21-49 ye

The reliability and validity of the panic disorder self-report: a new diagnostic screening measure of panic disorder.

This study examined the Panic Disorder Self-Report (PDSR), a new self-report diagnostic measure of panic disorder based on the 4th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (American Psychiatric Association, 1994). PDSR diagnoses were compared with structured interview diagnoses of individuals with generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, and panic disorder and nonanxious controls. Receiver operating characteristic analyses revealed that the PDSR showed 100% specificity and 89% sensitivity. The PDSR also demonstrated retest reliability, convergent and discriminan

The needs of aphasic patients for verbal communication as the element of life quality.

The fact of using the language by man confirms the specific properties of his brain. Man is not able to learn this skill without a contact with speaking and human environment. This skill of linguistic communication with others allows man to get knowledge about the surrounding world and on the other hand it enables him to express his thoughts, feelings and needs. Therefore, people with serious speech disorders, i.e. aphasic patients, suffer not only from the problems connected with communication but mainly because of the deterioration of their social status that consequently will change their l

Neuroanatomy and neurophysiology in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a major mental disorder, characterized by their set of symptoms, including hallucinatory-delusional symptoms, thought disorder, emotional flattening, and social withdrawal. Since 1980s, advances in neuroimaging and neurophysiological techniques have provided tremendous merits for investigations into schizophrenia as a brain disorder. In this article, we first overviewed neuroanatomical studies using structural magnetic resonance imaging (s-MRI), MR spectroscopy (MRS), and postmortem brains, followed by neurophysiological studies using event-related potentials (ERPs) and magnet

An Indonesian child with orofacial duplication and neurocristopathy anomalies: case report.

The parents of an Indonesian patient were concerned with the facial appearance of their child. A medical, family and social history was taken for the patient with the detection of no specific, systemic abnormalities or unusual conditions, although it was noted that the family lived in an area associated with pollutants. On examination, the facial appearance was asymmetric with inferior displacement of the right eye. The zygomatic-maxillary region appeared to be enlarged and deformed. There was unilateral macrostomia with the upper lip appearing elongated. Intra-oral examination revealed that t
