Altered brain glucose metabolism in COVID-19 disease: an activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis of PET studies.

COVID-19 disease, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has significantly altered modern society and lifestyles. We investigated its impact on bra … us, and right amygdala. In adults with COVID-19 disease, decreased metabolism was seen in the right temporal lobe, brainstem (acute phase), left occipital lobe, left and right temporal lobe (chronic phase). In conclusion, COVID-19 disease impacts brain glucose metabolism, typically manifesting as areas of decreased metabolism in 18F-FDG PET scans, though increa …

Elucidating the visual phenomena in epilepsy: A mini review.

Epilepsy is one of the most recognizable neurological diseases, globally. Epilepsy may be accompanied by various complications, including vi … anent and may vary depending of the type of epilepsy and location of the seizure foci (occipital or temporal lobe). Some visual phenomena may even be utilized to diagnose the epilepsy type, although solely depending on visual symptoms for diagnosis may lead to mistreatment. Some antiseizure medications (ASMs) may also contribute to certain visual disturbances, …

Aberrant brain gray matter and functional networks topology in end stage renal disease patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis with cognitive impairment.

PURPOSE: To characterize the topological properties of gray matter (GM) and functional networks in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients u … and degree centrality, predominantly within the default mode network, limbic system, frontal lobe, temporal lobe, and occipital lobe. Interestingly, the involved regions were distributed laterally. Furthermore, the MoCA scores significantly correlated with decreased standardized clustering coefficient (γ), standardized characteristic path length (λ), and nodal …

All patients developed IA within twenty-one days from birth. Etiologies of seizures included: temporal lobe hemorrhage (3 pt), occipital stroke (1 pt), hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) (1 pt), parasagittal injury (1 pt), 18 trisomy (2 pt). Five patients showed no structural CNS alterations. Ten patients had the ictal focus localized in the temporal l …

Anomalous Brain Development Is Evident in Preschoolers With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurological disorder with symptom onset early in childhood. Growing … 38 controls; 64.4% boys). RESULTS: Results revealed reductions in bilateral frontal, parietal, and temporal lobe gray matter volumes in children with ADHD relative to typically developing children, with largest effect sizes noted for right frontal and left temporal lobe volumes. Examining frontal lobe sub-regions, the largest between group effect sizes were ev …

Anterior-posterior gradient differences in lobar and cingulate cortex cerebral blood flow in late-life depression.

Vascular pathology is common in late-life depression, contributing to changes in cerebral function. We examined whether late-life depression … or gradient in CBF, with lower CBF throughout the frontal lobe but higher CBF in the parietal lobe, temporal lobe, thalamus and hippocampus. A similar anterior to posterior gradient was observed in the cingulate cortex, with anterior regions exhibiting lower CBF and posterior regions exhibiting higher CBF. We did not observe any group differences in CVR measure …

In addition, autism-specific brain abnormalities were found as increased grey matter volume in the right supramarginal gyrus. CONCLUSIONS: While the shared structural deviation …

Localisation value of ictal arterial spin-labelled sequences in partial seizures.

Perfusion-based magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using pulsed arterial spin-labelled (ASL) sequences is becoming a more commonly used tool for the diagnosis of patients with focal epilepsy. We report a patient with post-traumatic epilepsy and cortical haemorrhage who had a complex partial seizure characterised mainly by ictal speech (verbalisation) during MRI acquisition. Ictal ASL showed focal hyperperfusion over the right temporal region which had resolved on follow-up MRI, two weeks later. Seizure semiology and interictal EEG suggested seizure origin in the non-dominant temporal lobe, which…

Neuropsychological predictions on involuntary autobiographical memory and déjà vu.

I strongly support Barzykowski and Moulin in their proposal that common retrieval mechanisms can lead to distinct phenomenological memory experiences. I emphasize the importance of one of these mechanisms, namely the attribution system. Neuropsychological studies should help clarifying the role of these retrieval mechanisms, notably in cases of medial temporal-lobe lesions and cases of dementia.

Cerebral Astroblastoma: A Rare Tumor.

Astroblastoma is a rare neuroepithelial tumor of the central nervous system, which accounts for only 0.45-2.8% of all neuroglial tumors. These tumors have distinct radiological, histopathological, immunohistochemical, and molecular features. We describe a case of astroblastoma of the left temporal lobe in a 38-year-old female, who presented with complaints of headache and occasional episodes of vomiting.

The case of the 27-year old patient with huge tumour of the right parotid gland was shown in this article. The right parotid gland, the right parapharyngeal space, region of the right maxillary sinus and the right temporal lobe of the brain were involved. Histopathological examination revealed alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. The epidemiology, diagnostic problems and therapy were described.

Autistic syndrome with onset at age 31 years: herpes encephalitis as a possible model for childhood autism.

The author describes a previously healthy man who contracted herpes encephalitis at the age of 31 years, and over the following months developed all the symptoms considered diagnostic of autism. This case report casts doubt on the notion of autism as an exclusively developmental disorder. It is suggested that temporal lobe damage may cause autism in some cases.

Polydipsia, hyponatremia, and seizures in psychotic patients.

Case histories are presented for four psychotic patients who ingested large quantities of water and subsequently developed grand mal seizures and serum sodium levels of less than 121 meq/liter. The physiology of psychogenic polydipsia and related disorders is reviewed. The relation of this disorder to temporal lobe seizures and to the use of phenothiazines is considered.

The Differences of Cerebral Hyperperfusion in Patients With Moyamoya Disease and Atherosclerotic Occlusive Cerebrovascular Disease Evaluated by 99m Tc-ECD SPECT One Day After Revascularization Surgery.

BACKGROUND: To examine the relationship between postoperative cerebral hyperperfusion (CHP) and preoperative cerebral blood flow (CBF) SPECT findings in patients with moyamoya disease (MMD) or atherosclerotic occlusive cerebrovascular disease (AOCD). PATIENTS AND METHODS: We calculated the preoperative-postoperative CBF and postoperative increase rate (IR) in the frontal, temporal, and parietal lobes of 100 cerebral hemispheres and then compared the CHP patterns and severities among the patients with adult-onset MMD (AMMD), pediatric-onset MMD (PMMD), and AOCD. We investigated the association

Anatomy of the occipital lobe using lateral and posterior approaches: a neuroanatomical study with a neurosurgical perspective on intraoperative brain mapping.

BACKGROUND: A major concern of occipital lobe surgery is the risk of visual field deficits. Extending anatomical occipital lobectomy to the functional requires awake conditions because the anterior resection border comprises language-, motor- and visuospatial function-related areas within the temporal and parietal lobes. This study investigated the lateral and posterior perspectives of the occipital lobe anatomy when approaching intraaxial occipital lobe lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten adult cadaveric cerebral hemispheres were dissected after being prepared following the concept described
