Titers of anti-keratin antibodies (AKA) involving IgG and IgM fractions were determined by a solid-phase enzyme-linked immunsorbent assay (ELISA) and were found to be significantly higher on average in patients with pustulosis palmaris et plantaris (PPP) than in normal controls. Positive rates of IgG-AKA and IgM-AKA in sera of PPP patients were 50% and 66%, respectively. Following tonsillectomies, patients with high IgM-AKA titers that decreased after surgery were found to benefit by a marked improvement in their skin lesions. In a program to contact and examine 4180 individuals with a history of childhood irradiation treatment for enlarged tonsils and adenoids, the authors have discovered 29 neurilemomas, two neurofibromas, and one ganglioneuroma in the 2311 subjects who have been found. We report an unusual case of simultaneous occurrence of peritonsillar abscess due to Streptococcus viridans with an aneurism of the internal carotid artery. Inflammation caused by the abscess was so marked that its operative treatment unexpectedly uncovered the aneurism. BACKGROUND: Tonsillectomy requires an efficient intra- and postoperative hemostasis. The ultrasonically activated scalpel (UAS) uses high-frequency ultrasonic energy to perform tissue dissection and coagulation simultaneously. The present prospective study represents the first published results of UAS in tonsillectomy.
