New molecules were designed for efficient intra-oral delivery of antimicrobials to prevent and treat oral infection. The salivary statherin fragment, which has high affinity for the tooth enamel, was used as a carrier peptide. This was linked through the side chain of the N-terminal residue to the C-terminus of a defensin-like 12-residue peptide to generate two bifunctional hybrid molecules, one with an ester linkage and the other with an anhydride bond between the carrier and the antimicrobial components. They were examined for their affinity to a HAP (hydroxyapatite) surface. The extent of t

BACKGROUND: The present paper contributes to enrich the ethnobotanical knowledge of Calabria region (Southern Italy). Research was carried out in Alto Tirreno Cosentino, a small area lying between the Tyrrhenian coast and the Pollino National Park. In the area studied medicinal plants still play a small role among farmers, shepherds and other people who live far from villages and built-up areas.
METHODS: Information was collected by interviewing native people, mainly elderly - engaged in farming and stock-raising activities - and housewives. The plants collected, indicated by the locals, have

BACKGROUND: To date, no epidemiological study has been published on the periodontal health of the Belgian population. The aim of this study was to rectify this situation and determine the extent of the problem in Belgium.
METHODS: A prevalence survey was carried out in a representative sample of employees of the Catholic University of Louvain. A total of 402 people aged between 35 and 65 were examined. Periodontal suffering was estimated using the CPITN index (WHO), which determines the most affected sextant of a mouth in order to assign a code to the mouth as a whole. At the same time, treat

Localized osteoclastic bone resorption plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of several diseases of the middle ear as well as orthodontic tooth movement and long bone remodeling. The mechanisms of control of localized bone loss and systemic bone resorption may be different but both may be mediated by a final common pathway which includes prostaglandins. Prostaglandins seem to have a predominantly stimulatory effect on bone resorption, although the exact mechanism is poorly understood. Ibuprofen, a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug, is known to inhibit the synthesis of prostaglandins. I

IUDs releasing levonorgestrel, 10 micrograms per day (30 patients) and 30 micrograms per day (40 patients), and copper-releasing IUDs (Nova-T) (40 patients) were inserted six weeks after delivery in 110 breast-feeding amenorrheic women. The infants were carefully followed-up by recording monthly weight gain and growth, age of eruption of the first tooth, age of being able to walk without support and morbidity to infective diseases. No differences were noticed between the study groups. Plasma samples were collected from 13 children at the age of eight months, while the mothers were breast-feedi

Oral biofilms are key contributors to the development of dental caries and various periodontal diseases. Streptococcus mutans is a primary bacterium responsible for causing dental caries. Dental implants are frequently used to replace missing teeth, but biofilm accumulation on these implants is a major factor in implant failure. In the realm of dentistry, metal organic framework (MOFs) has shown potential in addressing the prevalent issue of dental caries, commonly known as tooth decay. ZIF-8 provides pH-responsive Zn2+ release in acidic environments typical of dental caries. Carbon nanocrysta

OBJECTIVES: Caries is still one of the most common diseases in Germany and world-wide, and most adults, children and adolescents are affected during their lifetime. The primary goal of oral disease prevention is therefore maintaining healthy teeth that are either free from decay or sufficiently restored without any secondary caries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This updated S3-guideline is intended to provide scientifically sound information on basic measures and recommendations for caries prevention in the permanent dentition, based on the current state of knowledge on etiology and pathogenesis of

Heat shock protein family B member 8 (HSPB8) is a chaperone involved in the chaperone-assisted selective autophagy (CASA) complex. HSPB8 in conjunction with cochaperone BAG3, promotes autophagy-mediated removal of misfolded proteins associated with various neurodegenerative diseases. Mutations in HSPB8 , previously associated with Charcot Marie Tooth disease type 2L, have recently been linked to an autosomal dominant rimmed vacuolar myopathy (MFM13), and is considered a multisystem proteinopathy. Patients have distal and proximal limb girdle myopathy with muscle biopsy showing fatty replacemen

Conventional periodontitis treatments are constrained by challenges such as antibiotic resistance and inadequate tissue regeneration. Herein, we rationally engineer a robust Fe/Mn bimetallic nanozyme (Fe/Mn-Bzyme) derived from a zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 precursor, featuring atomically asymmetric Fe-Mn dual-atom active sites with the Mn1-Fe1O1-Mn1N3 coordination environment meticulously embedded within a nitrogen-doped carbon matrix. This tailored structure endows the nanozyme with peroxidase-like (POD) activity, which is synergistically amplified by robust near-infrared (NIR) photother

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis and peri-implantitis are chronic inflammatory diseases that lead to progressive connective tissue degradation and alveolar bone resorption. The presence of characteristic periodontitisassociated fibroblasts (PAFs) that display a remarkably high capacity for extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation was previously reported in periodontitis lesions.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to analyze collagen gel degradation in an experimental cell culture model using fibroblasts isolated from peri-implantitis lesions.

BACKGROUND: Difficulty in chewing has been shown to be associated with increased mortality, geriatric syndromes, and poor activities of daily living, indicating the need for intervention. Chewing difficulties are related to tooth loss, periodontitis, dry mouth, and a number of oral health conditions. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the major causes of global burden of diseases, and has been associated with poor oral health. Prospective association between oral health status and the development of diabetes has also been reported. However, relationship between glycemic control and self-reported

BACKGROUND: Diseases underlying osteolytic lesions in jaws are characterized by the absorption of bone tissue and are often asymptomatic, delaying their diagnosis. Well-defined lesions (benign cyst-like lesions) and ill-defined lesions (osteomyelitis or malignancy) can be detected early in a panoramic radiograph (PR) by an experienced examiner, but most dentists lack appropriate training. To support dentists, this study aimed to develop and evaluate deep learning models for the detection of osteolytic lesions in PRs.
METHODS: A dataset of 676 PRs (165 well-defined, 181 ill-defined, 330 contro

BACKGROUND: Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS) is a rare, adult-onset neurodegenerative disease that predominantly affects upper motor neurons. Despite being considered mostly sporadic, familial cases and rare genetic variants in genes associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, hereditary spastic paraplegia and other neurological disorders have been reported in some PLS cases. Due to its rare prevalence among general population, large genetic studies of PLS are lacking.
METHODS: Fifty patients diagnosed with PLS based on consensus criteria were enrolled between 2013 and 2022 for comprehensiv

Alveolar bone, the protruding portion of the maxilla and the mandible that surrounds the roots of teeth, plays an important role in tooth development, eruption, and masticatory performance. In oral inflammatory diseases, including apical periodontitis, periodontitis, and peri-implantitis, alveolar bone defects cause the loosening or loss of teeth, impair the masticatory function, and endanger the physical and mental health of patients. However, alveolar bone restoration is confronted with great clinical challenges due to the the complicated effect of the biological, mechanical, and chemical fa

Connexin hemichannels (HCs) expressed at the plasma membrane of mammalian cells are of paramount importance for intercellular communication. In physiological conditions, HCs can form gap junction (GJ) channels, providing a direct diffusive path between neighbouring cells. In addition, unpaired HCs provide conduits for the exchange of solutes between the cytoplasm and the extracellular milieu, including messenger molecules involved in paracrine signalling. The synergistic action of membrane potential and Ca2+ ions controls the gating of the large and relatively unselective pore of connexin HCs.

Dental caries, as a biofilm-related disease, is closely linked to dysbiosis in microbial ecology within dental biofilms. Beyond its impact on oral health, bacteria within the oral cavity pose systemic health risks by potentially entering the bloodstream, thereby increasing susceptibility to bacterial endocarditis, among other related diseases. Streptococcus mutans, a principal cariogenic bacterium, possesses virulence factors crucial to the pathogenesis of dental caries. Its ability to adhere to tooth surfaces, produce glucans for biofilm formation, and metabolize sugars into lactic acid contr
