Prevalence and spatial distribution modelling of Fasciola species infection in sheep in northwest Ethiopia.

Fasciolosis, caused by Fasciola spp., is a neglected parasitic disease with significant veterinary and economic implications globally. The aim of the study was to estimate the prevalence, identify risk factors, and predict the spatial distribution of Fasciola spp. infection in sheep in northwestern Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study was conducted between June and August 2023 in six districts across three Gondar administrative zones. A total of 399 sheep were randomly selected, and faecal samples were examined using the sedimentation technique. Logistic regression was used to assess risk factors

A case report of giant coronary artery pseudoaneurysm and infective endocarditis: at what level can two pathologies be interconnected on a suitable background?

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery pseudoaneurysm (PSA) is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition, typically occurring after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Giant coronary PSA in patients without prior coronary procedures is exceedingly uncommon. Mycotic involvement, particularly with Staphylococcus aureus, may accelerate pseudoaneurysm progression and significantly worsen prognosis. CASE SUMMARY: We report the case of a 38-year-old man on long-term haemodialysis who presented with unstable angina and new electrocardiographic changes. Coronary angiography revealed severe proxima

Severe Tricuspid Regurgitation: Traumatic Papillary Muscle Rupture Mimicking Infective Endocarditis-A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Differentiating traumatic tricuspid regurgitation (TR) from infective endocarditis (IE) is clinically crucial in patients presenting with abnormal tricuspid valve findings after blunt chest trauma. Particularly, papillary muscle rupture caused by trauma can produce mobile valvular structures that closely resemble vegetations, making accurate diagnosis challenging in the acute setting. CASE REPORT A man in his 60s with pulmonary sarcoidosis was admitted after a 5-m fall, sustaining multiple fractures. Preoperative transthoracic echocardiography revealed a 7-mm mobile structure on the

Enterococcus faecalis Endocarditis as a Diagnostic Clue to Occult Rectal Cancer: A Two-Case Series.

Enterococcus faecalis is an important cause of bacteremia and infective endocarditis, but the portal of entry often remains unclear. Enterococcal endocarditis is potentially fatal and predominantly affects older men in published cohorts. We describe two men, aged 69 and 40 years, who presented with E. faecalis infective endocarditis and gastrointestinal symptoms. The first patient was admitted with fever and ischemic stroke after three months of chronic diarrhea. Transthoracic echocardiography demonstrated a 12.5 × 5.6 mm mitral-valve vegetation. Pelvic magnetic resonance imaging and colonosco

Libman-Sacks Endocarditis in Triple-Positive Antiphospholipid Syndrome Following Switch from Warfarin to Rivaroxaban: Improvement After Reinstitution of Warfarin and Escalation of Immunosuppression.

Triple-positive antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) represents a high-risk serologic phenotype associated with recurrent thrombosis and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), particularly rivaroxaban, have demonstrated inferior outcomes compared with vitamin K antagonists in this population. We report a case of a patient with long-standing SLE and persistently triple-positive APS who developed Libman-Sacks endocarditis following a switch from warfarin to rivaroxaban. The patient had biopsy-proven class V lupus nephritis and had remained clinically stable on long-te

Molecular-level exploration of spatiotemporal dynamics of fluvial particulate organic carbon sources during storm events: Using a high-temporal resolution multi-biomarker approach.

Identifying the origins of storm fluvial particulate organic carbon (POC) provides information about the hydrological connectivity within the river corridor and the roles of the land-stream interface in the carbon cycle. However, current understanding of storm-induced POC source dynamics is constrained by observations limited in space and time. This study presents a unique approach integrating higher spatial and temporal resolution sampling with a multi-biomarker analysis to better understand POC source dynamics across scales. Storm POC samples were collected at ∼2 h intervals at three locatio

The Faecal Microbiome Analysed from Healthy, Free-Roaming Giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis).

Similar to other herbivores, healthy giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) rely on a variety of symbiotic microorganisms in their digestive systems to break down cellulose and hemicellulose. In this study, we investigate the impact that external stimuli might have on the faecal prokaryote composition of healthy, free-roaming giraffes. Faecal samples were collected from six male and seven female giraffe individuals, over a 2-year period, during the wet and dry seasons, from six locations within the Free State Province, South Africa. Giraffe populations were exposed to one of two feeding practices w

Continuous autonomic system monitoring during neurosurgical procedures -proof of concept.

Vegetative reactions are common during neurosurgical procedures. Known effects are mainly cardiovascular, including tachy- and bradyarrhythmia, hyper- and hypotonia as well as cardiac arrest. Computer-assisted real-time analysis of heart rate variability (HRV), baroreflex-sensitivity (BRS) allows for continuous evaluation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). We analyzed ANS parameters during intracranial neurosurgical procedures. In this pilot study, we aim to provide proof-of-concept that ANS monitoring during surgery is feasible and yields stable results. We included 129 consecutive patient

Tracking Enterobacteria, microbiomes, and antibiotic resistance genes from waste to soil with repeated compost applications.

The dissemination of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and genes is one factor responsible for the increasing antibiotic resistance and the environment plays a role in resistance spread. Animal excreta can contribute to the contamination of the environment with ARBs and antibiotics and in some cases, environmental bacteria under antibiotic pressure may acquire antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) from ARBs by horizontal gene transfer. In Guadeloupe, a French overseas department, organic amendments derived from human and animal waste are widely used in soil fertilization, but their contribution

Tricuspid Endocarditis Leading to a Stroke: A Case Report of Paradoxical Embolism in a Young Intravenous Drug User.

Infective endocarditis (IE) involving the tricuspid valve is commonly associated with intravenous drug use, with right-sided IE typically leading to septic pulmonary emboli; however, systemic embolization via paradoxical embolism is a rare and severe complication. We present a case of a 33-year-old female with a history of intravenous drug use who was admitted with generalized pain after leaving another facility against medical advice following treatment for pneumonia and tricuspid valve endocarditis, including vegetation debulking. On readmission, she exhibited signs of infection, and imaging

Remote Sensing and GIS-Based Study to Predict Risk Zones for Mosquito-Borne Diseases in Cuttack District, Odisha, India.

Tropical and sub-tropical regions mostly provide favorable conditions for the spread of vector-borne diseases especially those transmitted by mosquito vectors. Viral disease outbreaks such as dengue, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis; and parasitic diseases such as malaria, and filariasis; are common health problems caused by mosquitos. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), globally around 40% of people are at high risk of mosquito-borne diseases (MBD) (WHO Fact-sheets, 2020, https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/vector-borne-diseases). In the present study, Remote Sens

Pursuit and escape drive fine-scale movement variation during migration in a temperate alpine ungulate.

Climate change reduces snowpack, advances snowmelt phenology, drives summer warming, alters growing season precipitation regimes, and consequently modifies vegetation phenology in mountain systems. Elevational migrants track spatial variation in seasonal plant growth by moving between ranges at different elevations during spring, so climate-driven vegetation change may disrupt historic benefits of migration. Elevational migrants can furthermore cope with short-term environmental variability by undertaking brief vertical movements to refugia when sudden adverse conditions arise. We uncover driv
