Cross-feeding and co-degradation within a bacterial consortium dominated by challenging-to-culture Leucobacter sp. HA-1 enhances sulfonamide degradation.

The use of sulfonamides (SAs) leads to residual environmental pollution. Bacteria play a crucial role in the degradation of SAs, and microbial consortium offers advantages over single bacterium. However, the complexity of the degradation processes and interaction mechanisms within such consortia remains a mystery. Here, a consortium named ACJ, comprising Leucobacter sp. HA-1, Bacillus sp. HC-1, and Gordonia sp. HAEJ-1, isolated from activated sludge in the wastewater treatment facilities of pharmaceutical plants, was identified as capable of degrading various SAs. Here, a pure culture of Leuco

Structural and functional responses of microbial communities in coastal sediments towards anthropogenic pollution caused by ship breaking activities.

Coastal ecosystems, like many others on the planet, face chronic threats from anthropogenic activities. The Alang-Sosiya Ship Breaking Yard (ASSBY) located near Bhavnagar in Gujarat, India, represents one such ecosystem impacted by decades of ship-breaking activities. This study aimed to assess the differences in microbial community composition between polluted coastal samples and pristine samples through high-throughput sequencing. Additionally, microbial co-occurrence networks and genes related to antibiotic and heavy metal resistance were predicted using metagenome mining. The analysis conf

The inhibiting effect of PS-SRMs concentration changes on the biodegradation of BTX in karst groundwater.

In-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) combined with enhanced bioremediation (EBR) is a viable strategy for remediating organic contaminants in groundwater. Nevertheless, the inhibitory effect of oxidant injection dosages on microbial communities remains an understudied. This study employed a microcosm experiment to remediate karst groundwater contaminated by fuel hydrocarbons, combining slow-release materials (SRMs) with the release of the oxidant persulfate (PS). It mainly investigated the release performance of PS-SRMs, the responses of hydro-chemical indicators and electron acceptor concentrati

Biotransformation of Emerging Polyfluoroalkyl Substances Derived from Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) under Nitrate-, Sulfate-, and Iron-Reducing Conditions.

While the aerobic transformation of emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF) has been extensively studied, their fate under anoxic/anaerobic conditions remains poorly characterized. This study investigated the stability and biotransformation of nine emerging polyfluoroalkyl compounds in a composite AFFF under nitrate-, sulfate-, and iron-reducing conditions. The biotransformation behavior of seven compounds under anoxic conditions is reported for the first time. After 300 days of incubation, 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate and three compounds contain

Suspect and Nontarget Screening of Sulfonamides and Novel Transformation Products in Pharmaceutical Wastewater-Contaminated Areas: Distribution, Migration, and Environmental Risks.

High-concentration wastewater from antibiotic manufacturing plants generates significant pollutants in the receiving environment. However, the fate of antibiotics and their transformation products (TPs) in multimedia environments, as well as their environmental risks, remains limited. By utilizing comprehensive target, suspect, and nontarget screening strategies, we identified 22 sulfonamides (SAs) and 29 TPs in surface water, sediment, groundwater, and soil column samples contaminated with sulfonamide pharmaceutical wastewater. Notably, five SAs and eight TPs were first reported in environmen

Sensor array based on Cu-based metal-organic frameworks nanozymes for rapid identification of phenolic pollutants.

BACKGROUND: Phenol and its derivatives pose a threat to aquatic organisms and human health even at low concentrations in environments, and their biotoxicity was related to their substituent groups and substitution positions, whereas the rapid identification of various phenolic contaminants is difficult with current methods. RESULTS: Herein, a nanozyme sensor array based on copper-based metal-organic frameworks (Cu-MOFs) was designed for the effective identification of five phenolic contaminants (phenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, 3-chlorophenol, o-chlorophenol, and p-chlorophenol). Wherein, three Cu

Ecotoxicological effects of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in aquatic organisms: A review.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are found throughout the environment due to their chemical stability. Their widespread use in industrial and consumer products has resulted in their frequent detection in aquatic environments, making them contaminants of significant concern. Recent studies focus on the adverse effects of PFAS on aquatic organisms in an effort to elucidate their toxic mechanisms and physiological changes. Here, we comprehensively review the major effects of PFAS on aquatic organisms, including general toxicity, metabolic disruption, and microbiome alterations, and expl

Limited effects of chronic exposure to field-realistic concentrations of carbamazepine on Deleatidium spp. mayfly nymphs.

Pharmaceuticals are a class of emerging organic contaminants found in freshwaters. Potential chronic effects of many legacy drugs (those developed pre-2006) on freshwater biota were not investigated thoroughly before their market release. Carbamazepine, a drug used to treat epilepsy and certain types of neuropathic pain, is a legacy contaminant commonly detected in surface freshwaters worldwide, yet its potential impacts on aquatic invertebrates are largely unknown. Our study investigated the chronic effects (21-d exposure) of environmentally relevant concentrations of carbamazepine (measured

Novel hemin-derived Fe/N-C magnetic catalyst for enhanced peroxymonosulfate activation and diclofenac degradation.

In this study, Fe involved N-doped carbon catalysts labelled as PA@Hemx (x = pyrolysis temperature) was synthesized through a one-step pyrolysis of hemin (Hem) and polyacrylate (PA). The reported method enables high dispersion and exposure of both Fe and N active sites on PA derived carbon. The PA@Hemx samples were then used for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activated diclofenac (DCF) degradation. Results from the characterization studies verified the successful incorporation of hemin in the composite. Approximately 99.2 % DCF degradation at pH = 6.01 was achieved in 60 min using 0.1 g L-1 PA@Hem700

Dual Pathways in 222 nm Far-UVC Photodegradation of Sulfonamides: Direct Photolysis and Radical-Mediated Self-Sensitized Oxidation.

222 nm Far-UVC irradiation offers a promising mercury-free approach for removing sulfonamides (SAs) from water, but its photolytic mechanisms remain unclear. Here, the photodegradation of six representative SAs under 222 nm irradiation was investigated, emphasizing the roles of dissociated forms (neutral and deprotonated) and substituent structures (five-membered and six-membered heterocyclic). Results demonstrated that SAs' photodegradation proceeded through both direct photolysis and radical-mediated self-sensitized pathways. Dissociated forms primarily influenced the kinetics and the relati

Enhanced activation of peroxymonosulfate using Y3+ substituted magnetic nanostructured ZnFe2O4 for carbamazepine degradation.

The catalytic performance of magnetic nanostructured ZnFe2O4 can be feasibly improved by metal cations doping. In this work, Y3+ doping at B-site of ZnFe2O4 was successfully synthesized and used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for carbamazepine (CBZ) degradation. Among the ZnYxFe2-xO4 (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75) catalysts, ZnY0.25Fe1.75O4 achieved the best catalytic activity, with a CBZ removal efficiency of 91.0 % after 60 min reaction. The control experiments indicated that the removal of CBZ in ZnY0.25Fe1.75O4/PMS system was mainly attributed to the heterogeneous catalysis rather than t

Simple and low-cost synthesis of g-C3N4 for efficient sunlight photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics in biogas slurry.

Applying biogas slurry containing antibiotics as organic fertilizer to farmland can lead to the accumulation of antibiotics in the soil and access the water environment further through surface runoff and leachate, posing a potential risk to the regional water environment. In this study, photocatalysis was performed to degrade the antibiotics in biogas slurry employing g-C3N4 as a catalyst under visible light and sunlight. g-C3N4 was prepared by simple thermal polymerization at different temperatures and times with cheap urea and melamine, respectively, and the yield, structural characterizatio

Effects of hollow glass microspheres on cold-water pelagic copepods and fish.

The highly reflective properties of hollow glass microspheres (HGM) have motivated their application as a reflective shield onto Arctic sea ice to increase albedo and reduce melting. However, to ensure safe application in the environment, their potential environmental impacts must be assessed. While most HGMs will be positively buoyant in seawater and thus remain in the upper part of the water column, small, cracked and broken HGMs will sink. In this study, we conducted a series of experiments to investigate interactions between HGMs and cold-water pelagic copepods (Calanus finmarchicus) and f

Comprehensive method to detect nitazene analogues and xylazine in wastewater.

A class of novel synthetic opioids, nitazenes, have infiltrated the illicit drug market worldwide. Their high potency leading to overdose and fatality is a public health concern. Xylazine is a non-opiate sedative typically used for veterinary applications. The drug has recently appeared as an adulterant in the informal drug market, particularly within opioid drugs such as fentanyl and heroin. Determining the extent of use of these drugs is challenging due to low levels consumed. Wastewater analysis has been applied to monitor novel psychoactive substance use at a population level. This study p

Methylmercury causes changes in the cardiac activity of an Amazonian fish (Colossoma macropomum): an electrocardiographic study.

Pollution from gold mining has been a major problem in the Amazon River basin. Mercury in its main organic form, methylmercury (MeHg), is potentially toxic to fish, which are mainly affected by inadequate disposal of this pollutant. The present study aimed to evaluate the cardiac graphoelements over the 1-h exposure of Colossoma macropomum to an immersion bath using different concentrations of MeHg. For that purpose, 45 fish were used, assayed into four groups according to the following concentrations: 10 µg/ml, 20 µg/ml, 30 µg/ml and 40 µg/ml MeHg (n = 9). Exposure to different concentrations

In situ construction of green ZnFe2O4/sub-5nm N, Cu dual-doped SnO2 S-scheme heterostructure with the boosted spatial charge separation towards decontamination of tetracycline: Mechanistic perspectives and aquatic hazard assessment.

The extensive consumption of pharmaceuticals has exacerbated environmental threats to living organisms globally. Herein, designing a green and magnetically separable S-scheme heterostructure with boosted visible light photocatalytic activity is imperative for the disintegration of these contaminants. In this study, ultra-fine (<5 nm) high surface area (118 m2 g-1) SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) were constructed, exhibiting a remarkably reduced bandgap of 2.9 eV compared to the conventional value of 3.6 eV for SnO2. Concurrently, N and Cu impurities were incorporated into the SnO2 lattice framework (

Unveiling Hidden Mercury and Methylmercury Sources: The Role of Submarine Groundwater Discharge in Coastal Lagoons.

Mercury loads from Submarine Groundwater Discharge (SGD) may represent an overlooked source of methylmercury (MeHg) to the ocean, affecting human and ecosystem health. The SGD process involves the flow of fresh, saline, or mixed groundwater from coastal aquifers into the oceans classified in different components. Existing studies rarely report the fluxes supplied by the different SGD components; therefore, the relevance of SGD as a source of mercury remains unclear. We aimed to quantify SGD-driven mercury/methylmercury fluxes to the coast, focusing on the largest coastal lagoon in the western

Interaction of cyanobacteria and microplastics polystyrene spiked with pharmaceutical drug-paracetamol.

The microplastics polymer-polystyrene, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, etc. are now recognized as potent threats to the aquatic system due to the Trojan horse effect i.e., they adsorb other pollutants such as pharmaceutical drugs, organic solvents, metals etc. and act as a vector or carrier. Polystyrene (PS) is one of the most usable plastics worldwide that abundantly contaminates the aquatic body. However, to date, only a few studies have focused on the eco-toxic effects of polystyrene in combination with other pollutants. Therefore, in the present study, the effect of polystyrene (pristine
