Body image dissatisfaction and anthropometric indicators in male children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between body image dissatisfaction and body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage (BF%) and to identify which of these anthropometric indicators are more strongly associated, and finally to estimate the prevalence of overweight and high body adiposity in male children and adolescents, according to maturational stages. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Overall, 1499 students aged from 7 to 17 years from Cascavel, PR, Brazil, were evaluated. Body image was self-rated through the body silhouette scale. Body weight, height and tri…

The effect of maternal and fetal weight on the risk of emergency cesarean section in nulliparous women.

Although many studies based on different ethnic groups have analyzed the impact of maternal and infant weight on overall cesarean section rates in recent years, research on the impact of maternal and infant weight on emergency cesarean section (EmCS) rates is lacking, especially in the Chinese population. This study aimed to analyze whether maternal and fetal weight could influence the risk of EmCS. A total of 8427 nulliparous women who delivered vaginally (full-term, singleton, and cephalic presentation) were included in this study and divided into the normal vaginal delivery (VD) and EmCS gr

Correlation Between Plasma Catecholamines, Weight, and Diabetes in Pheochromocytoma and Paraganglioma.

CONTEXT: Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PCC/PGL) are neuroendocrine tumors with discrete catecholamine profiles that cause incompletely understood metabolic and physiologic changes. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to evaluate relationships between plasma catecholamines, body weight, and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). We hypothesized that individual catecholamines would correlate negatively with weight and glucose control. DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study was performed (1999-2020). Wilcoxon rank-sum tests compared nonparametric, continuous variables; mixed-effect linear modeling (MEM) evalua…

Protocol for a randomised controlled trial of a weight maintenance intervention to promote fat loss in pregnant individuals with obesity.

INTRODUCTION: In pregnancy, people with obesity or excess adiposity are prone to excess gestational weight gain (GWG) and have the highest risks for multiple maternal morbidities. Epidemiological studies suggest that the lowest incidence of adverse maternal and infant outcomes occurs with GWG lower than current recommendations (<5 kg) and with gestational weight maintenance, resulting in fat mass loss, in those with obesity. Data from randomised clinical trials are needed to evaluate the efficacy of a fat mass loss intervention on pregnancy outcomes. The objective of this proof-of-principle ra

Safety of low weight gain or weight loss in pregnancies with class 1, 2, and 3 obesity: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: There are concerns that current gestational weight gain recommendations for women with obesity are too high and that guidelines should differ on the basis of severity of obesity. In this study we investigated the safety of gestational weight gain below current recommendations or weight loss in pregnancies with obesity, and evaluated whether separate guidelines are needed for different obesity classes. METHODS: In this population-based cohort study, we used electronic medical records from the Stockholm-Gotland Perinatal Cohort study to identify pregnancies with obesity (early pregn

Weight gain patterns among pregnancies with obesity and small- and large-for-gestational-age births.

OBJECTIVE: This case-cohort study estimated associations between gestational weight gain (GWG) and small-for-gestational-age (SGA) and large-for-gestational-age (LGA) births stratified by obesity class (I: 30-34.9 kg/m2 ; II: 35-39.9 kg/m2 ; III: ≥40 kg/m2 ) (Magee-Womens Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1998-2011). METHODS: First-trimester GWG was categorized as being below (<0.2 kg), within (0.2-2.0 kg), or above (>2.0 kg) the Institute of Medicine recommendations. For second- and third-trimester GWG, four linear trajectories were derived: approximating maintenance (slope -0.05 ± 0.03 kg

Infant weight trajectories and early childhood wheezing: the NINFEA birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Rapid postnatal weight gain has been associated with wheezing and asthma in children, but it remains unclear whether it acts independently of overweight. We aimed to disentangle the roles of infant's size and weight gain velocity in the development of wheezing in early childhood using a novel method that allows for mutual adjustment for different aspects of growth. METHODS: Data were obtained from the NINFEA questionnaires where weight measurements from birth up to 18 months of age were assessed in 4492 term singletons. Wheezing was defined as at least one episode of wheezing/whis

Anthropometric predictors of low birth weight outcome in teenage pregnancy.

The highest relative risks of low birth weight are found among births to teenage mothers. An analysis of anthropometrics (weight, mid-arm circumference, and triceps skinfold) among black teenagers attending an adolescent prenatal program was studied. The sample consisted of 100 girls under 17 years. Data were collected from 19 to 35 weeks gestation. Adolescent mothers who delivered low birth weight (LBW) infants demonstrated different patterns of anthropometric changes than teen mothers who delivered normal birth weight (NBW) infants. Mean mid-arm circumference increases in the LBW group (0.05

Theophylline treatment in the extubation of infants weighing less than 1,250 grams: a controlled trial.

The role of theophylline in weaning infants weighing less than 1,250 g at birth from mechanical ventilation was evaluated. Infants were randomized into control or theophylline treatment groups when they required minimal ventilatory support (peak inspiratory pressure 12 cm H2O, positive end-expiratory pressure 2 cm H2O, rate 12 breaths per minute, and FiO2 less than 0.3), and they were extubated 24 hours later. Infants required reintubation if they had (1) PaCO2 greater than 55 mm Hg and pH less than 7.20, (2) FiO2 greater than 0.5, or (3) apnea associated with a heart rate less than 100 beats

Exploring the interplay of weight-based teasing and sociodemographic factors in adolescent weight bias internalization.

OBJECTIVE: Research has highlighted the potential adverse effects of weight bias internalization (WBI) on adolescents, but there has been little examination of WBI and sources of weight teasing (family, peers, or both) or across racial/ethnic diversity of adolescents. We aimed to examine the relationship between WBI and sources of weight teasing across sociodemographic characteristics and weight status in a diverse community sample of adolescents. METHODS: Data were collected from a U.S. sample of 1859 adolescents aged 10-17 years (59% female; 43% White, 27% Black or African American, and 25%

Body composition changes in patients with head and neck cancer under active treatment: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Head and neck cancer patients have the second highest malnutrition prevalence, when compared with other oncological patients. They experience significant weight loss before diagnosis, during and after treatment, and even during the first year of follow-up. However, the prognostic value of weight loss depends on body mass index, and this may be associated with low skeletal muscle mass, masking its loss. Thus, weight loss itself poorly predicts outcome in head and neck cancer patients when compared with depleted skeletal muscle mass, illustrating the inadequacy of body mass index as
