AIM: This study aimed at comparing the mechanical properties of conventional and locking dual plates in adjacent and orthogonal orientations for the surgical fixation of transverse femoral shaft fractures. It also assessed the failure mechanics after dual adjacent and orthogonal locking plate removal.
METHODS: Thirty-two composite femurs were transversally osteotomized and randomly assigned for fixation with either dual locking or compression plates in an adjacent or orthogonal configuration. Sixteen specimens were preloaded axially to 20 N and single-leg stance loads were simulated. The rema

Internal rigid fixation is the gold-standard treatment for facial fractures, but there are some specific cases that are more amenable to external fixation (ex-fix) application. Herein, we discuss advantages and disadvantages to ex-fix in the modern treatment of comminuted mandible fractures, infected mandible fractures, fractures of the condylar region, oncologic mandibular resection, pediatric mandible fractures, and fractures in the edentulous patient.

PURPOSE: This biomechanical study compared the stability of volar locking plates (VLPs) and locking fragment-specific (LFS) dorsal and radial styloid plates for the fixation of dorsal (AO 23-B2) and radial styloid (AO 23-B1) shear fractures of the distal radius, respectively.
METHODS: Two groups of 6 composite radii were fixed with a VLP or an LFS dorsal plate over a simulated dorsal shear fracture. Two additional groups of 6 radii received the same VLP or an LFS radial plate to fix a radial styloid fracture. Each plated radius was tested under cyclic axial compression by a servohydraulic tes

In spite of the more popular volar approach for plating of distal radius fractures (DRFs), there are still indications for dorsal plating and even combined dorsovolar plating in complex DRFs. Dorsal plating carries a concern for complications such as tenosynovitis, extensor tendon adhesions, and delayed extensor tendon ruptures. These risks can be minimized by use of modern low-profile plates and the use of an extensor retinaculum flap to cover the distal plate and screws. We describe the technique of the dorsal retinaculum flap for dorsal plating of DRFs.

BACKGROUND: Open reduction and internal fixation of proximal humerus fractures can be difficult to achieve adequate, complication free results due to osteopenia of the proximal humerus and unstable fracture patterns. This study aimed to compare the biomechanical properties of a novel hybrid fixed angle blade plate (Fx plate) with an established fixed angle locking plate (PHILOS plate).
METHODS: A two-part fracture was simulated in synthetic composite humeri by creating a transverse osteotomy and 10 mm fracture gap at the surgical neck. After treating the fractures with either an Fx plate or a

Polydactyly is a common congenital deformity of the foot that can be categorized as preaxial, central, or postaxial. Current treatments involve resecting the supernumerary toe(s) and repairing the normal toe(s) and soft tissue. Here, we present the first published report describing a very rare case of polydactyly of the foot, in which the supernumerary toe originated from a deformed calcaneus, which formed an abnormal bony bump. Preoperatively, 3-dimensional (3D) computed tomography reconstruction images revealed the morphology of the deformed toe and calcaneus, and gait analysis showed an abn

OBJECTIVE: To compare the mechanical resistance of conventional plates with a modified Y-plate in mandibular condyle fracture.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 40 synthetic hemi-mandibular polyurethane replicates were used. Two groups of fixing materials were included: 20 mandibles fixed with 40 straight plates with four roles each (2.0 mm system) and 20 mandibles fixed with 20 Y-shaped plates (2.0 mm system and 1.5 mm thickness). The samples were submitted to linear loading in the following directions: 10 mandibles from each group from lateral to medial and 10 mandibles from each group from anterior t

This review of current literature discusses the morphology of the volar aspect of the distal radius; the surgical procedure, arthroscopic findings, and clinical results of a plate presetting and arthroscopic reduction technique for acute intra-articular fractures; and a novel simulation guidance system for malunited intra-articular fractures. Classification of intra-articular distal radius fractures is also discussed, focusing on central depression fracture fragments, associated soft tissue injuries, and results for measuring scapholunate distances at different sites. Problems of the distal ra

AIMS: To synthesise the literature and perform a meta-analysis detailing the longitudinal recovery in the first two years following a distal radius fracture (DRF) managed with volar plate fixation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three databases were searched to identify relevant articles. Following eligibility screening and quality assessment, data were extracted and outcomes were assimilated at the post-operative time points of interest. A state-of-the-art longitudinal mixed-effects meta-analysis model was employed to analyse the data.
RESULTS: The search identified 5698 articles, of which 46 study

This is a review of the various approaches that can be used for open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of distal radius fractures. The main dissection steps are exposed and the specific indications for each approach are described. The anterior approach is discussed extensively as it is now the gold standard for ORIF of distal radius fractures. The lateral and posterior approaches are also described as they are sometimes needed for complex fractures.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Double plate fixation has been reported in a small number of horses with comminuted fractures of the middle phalanx. There are no published reports using this technique in the management of other injuries that destabilise the proximal interphalangeal joint (PIJ), including biaxial palmar/plantar eminence fractures and disruption of the palmar/plantar soft tissue support structures of the PIJ. Furthermore, there is a paucity of information on the long-term prognosis for horses undergoing double plate fixation to manage destabilising injuries of the PIJ.

Growth modulation using tension band plates (TBP) has been shown to be a safe, effective, and popular method for correcting pediatric frontal plane angular deformity around the knee. Recently, TBPs have been used to achieve reversible epiphysiodesis to treat limb-length discrepancy. Many surgeons have expanded the indications to include diagnoses other than frontal plane angular deformities, anatomic sites other than the knee, and correction of sagittal and oblique plane deformities. Despite the rapid acceptance of TBPs, the limits of this option have not been explored. We undertook a systemat

Even though modern surgical techniques are dominating reconstructive facial procedures, the capability to use facial epitheses for reconstruction is still an important skill for the maxillofacial surgeon. We present an international multicenter analysis to clarify which techniques are used to fixate facial prostheses. We contacted all maxillofacial departments in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Norway which were registered with the German society for oral and maxillofacial surgery (DGMKG). These centers were asked via electronical mail to provide information on the type of epithesis fixation

Distal radius fractures are among the most common fractures of the upper extremity. Indications for operative and nonsurgical management have evolved over time, as have fixation techniques. Volar locking plates are commonly used in the treatment of selected distal radius fractures such as low-energy or relatively uncomplicated fractures. They have limitations, however, in the management of highly comminuted fracture patterns and in polytrauma patients. In these patients, other methods ranging from spanning fixation to fragment-specific fixation have emerged as useful alternatives in the surgeo
