[Electron-microscopic changes in neurosecretory nuclei of the rat hypothalamus after total ischemia in short-term clinical death].

Hypothalamic neurosecretory nuclei of rats in which short-term clinical death was experimentally induced, were examined electron-microscopically. Material for studies was taken two weeks after resuscitation of animals following 5 min cardiac and respiratory arrest. Application of aldehyde fixatives with Alcian blue as well as fixatives containing tannic acid revealed numerous additional ultrastructural features not visualized in routine electron microscopy. The obtained results are indicative that short-term cerebral ischemia in rats results in ultrastructural abnormalities in neurosecretory h

Durable Intracranial Control Beyond Five Years in EGFR Wild-Type Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer with Sequential Brain Metastases Managed with Multimodal Therapy: A Case Report.

Background and Clinical Significance: Brain metastases in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) carry a poor prognosis, particularly in patients lacking targetable driver mutations or significant programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression. Durable intracranial control exceeding five years is uncommon in this population and the factors that determine exceptional therapeutic response remain incompletely understood; Case Presentation: We report a 59-year-old male with pathological stage pT3N1 solid-type pulmonary adenocarcinoma (EGFR wild-type, ALK wild-type, PD-L1 <1%) who developed two sequentia

Molecular Mechanisms of Manganese Oxide Nanoparticles Toxicity in Brain and Other Tissues: An Overview.

The use of manganese oxide nanoparticles (MnOxNPs) in biomedicine increases the risk of their accumulation in the body, potentially leading to toxicity in various organs and tissues. In addition, occupational exposure to MnOxNPs-containing aerosols may also occur. MnOxNPs have been shown to accumulate in the brain and induce neurobehavioral alterations. However, the specific mechanisms of MnOxNPs toxicity in the brain and other tissues remain incompletely understood. Therefore, the objective of this review is to summarize existing data on the toxicity of MnOxNPs in the brain and other tissues,

ACP5-positive macrophages contribute to cerebral oedema and neuroinflammation after traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and long-term disability worldwide. Secondary cerebral oedema, driven by neuroinflammation and blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption, critically determines poor outcomes, yet effective targeted therapies remain absent. This study aimed to identify immune cell subsets associated with post-TBI cerebral oedema and to explore their functional contributions in preclinical models. METHODS: We integrated single-cell transcriptomic datasets from a mouse TBI model (GSE175430) and human intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) perihaematomal oe

Incidence and predictors of acute kidney injury among traumatic brain injury patients in Northwest Ethiopia: a cohort study using survival analysis.

BACKGROUND: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a sudden and reversible decrease in kidney function, causing the retention of waste products in the blood and potentially resulting in severe complications or death if not timely managed. Studies on AKI among traumatic brain injury patients in low-income nations like Ethiopia is very critical due to the limited healthcare resources, high burden of trauma-related injuries, and lack of robust data on the incidence and risk factors of AKI in such settings, which hinders effective prevention and treatment strategies tailored to these vulnerable populations

Targeting neuroinflammation: 3-monothiopomalidomide a new drug candidate to mitigate traumatic brain injury and neurodegeneration.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a major risk factor for neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), with neuroinflammation playing a critical role in the secondary cell death that exacerbates the initial injury. While targeting neuroinflammation holds significant therapeutic promise, clinical trials of available anti-inflammatory agents have fallen short. 3-Mono-thiopomalidomide (3-MP), a novel immunomodulatory imide drug (IMiD), was designed to curb inflammation without the adverse effects of traditional IMiDs and was evaluated across

Microvesicles carrying EV71 virions cross BBB through endocytic pathway to induce brain injury.

Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is a major etiologic pathogen for hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) in young children. Severe cases of EV71 infection could lead to neurological complications and even death, while the mechanism inducing neurological complications remains poorly understood. In this study, we firstly proved that microvesicles (MVs) could carry EV71 virions and mediate a higher efficiency in infection. Utilizing an in vitro blood-brain barrier (BBB) model, we observed that MVs containing virions (MVsEV71) could cross the BBB with greater efficiency compared to EV71 alone. Through in vivo i

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning (Reprinted from the 2023 Hyperbaric Indications Manual 15th edition).

Despite established exposure limits and safety standards, and the availability of carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, each year an estimated 50,000 people in the United States visit emergency departments for CO poisoning. Carbon monoxide poisoning can occur from brief exposures to high levels of CO or from longer exposures to lower levels. If the CO exposure is sufficiently high, unconsciousness and death occur quickly, and without symptoms. With non-lethal exposures to CO, common symptoms include headaches, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, general malaise, and altered mental status. Some patients may

In vivo biocompatibility assessment of 3D printed bioresorbable polymers for brain tissue regeneration. A feasibility study.

INTRODUCTION: The limited capacity of brain tissue to regenerate after acute injury, hampered by cell death, edema and inflammation, has led to an interest in promising and innovative approaches such as implantable regenerative scaffolds designed to improve brain plasticity. Leveraging the capabilities of bioprinting, these scaffolds can be tailored to match the intricate architecture of the brain. METHODS: In this methodological study, we performed in vivo biocompatibility assessments after a brain lesion on three distinct bioeliminable or bioresorbable materials: Poly(ethylene glycol) diacr

Deferoxamine Mitigates Ferroptosis and Inflammation in Hippocampal Neurons After Subarachnoid Hemorrhage by Activating the Nrf2/TXNRD1 Axis.

Ferroptosis is a distinct peroxidation-driven form of cell death tightly involved in subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). This study delved into the mechanism of deferoxamine (DFO, an iron chelator) in SAH-induced ferroptosis and inflammation. SAH mouse models were established by endovascular perforation method and injected intraperitoneally with DFO, or intraventricularly injected with the Nrf2 pathway inhibitor ML385 before SAH, followed by detection of neurological function, blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability, and brain water content. Apoptotic level of hippocampal neurons, symbolic changes o

Electrocardiogram alterations in non-traumatic brain injury: a systematic review.

The presence of abnormal electrocardiograms in individuals without known organic heart disease is one of the most common manifestations of cardiac dysfunction occurring during acute non traumatic brain injury. The primary goal of the present review is to provide an overview of the available data and literature regarding the presence of new-onset electrocardiographic (ECG) alterations in acute non traumatic brain injury. The secondary aim is to identify the incidence of ECG alterations and consider the prognostic significance of new-onset ECG changes in this setting. To do so, English language

Maternal SARS-CoV-2, Placental Changes and Brain Injury in 2 Neonates.

Long-term neurodevelopmental sequelae are a potential concern in neonates following in utero exposure to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus disease 2 (SARS-CoV-2). We report 2 neonates born to SARS-CoV-2 positive mothers, who displayed early-onset (day 1) seizures, acquired microcephaly, and significant developmental delay over time. Sequential MRI showed severe parenchymal atrophy and cystic encephalomalacia. At birth, neither infant was SARS-CoV-2 positive (nasopharyngeal swab, reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction), but both had detectable SARS-CoV-2 antibodies and incr

Bevacizumab is an effective treatment for symptomatic cerebral necrosis after carbon ion therapy for recurrent intracranial malignant tumours: A case report.

Carbon ion therapy (CIT) is a form of particle therapy, which not only spares normal tissues but may also improve local control of recurrent intracranial tumours. Cerebral radiation necrosis (RN) is one of the most serious adverse reactions of recurrent brain tumours following reirradiation, which may lead to neurological decline or even death. Bevacizumab is an anti-vascular endothelial growth factor antibody, which has been used to treat symptomatic RN. However, studies on bevacizumab for the treatment of CIT-induced RN are sparse. The present study described two cases that were successfully

The Role of Gut Dysbiosis in the Pathophysiology of Neuropsychiatric Disorders.

Mounting evidence shows that the complex gut microbial ecosystem in the human gastrointestinal (GI) tract regulates the physiology of the central nervous system (CNS) via microbiota and the gut-brain (MGB) axis. The GI microbial ecosystem communicates with the brain through the neuroendocrine, immune, and autonomic nervous systems. Recent studies have bolstered the involvement of dysfunctional MGB axis signaling in the pathophysiology of several neurodegenerative, neurodevelopmental, and neuropsychiatric disorders (NPDs). Several investigations on the dynamic microbial system and genetic-envir

Erythrocyte Membrane-Enveloped Salvianolic Acid B Nanoparticles Attenuate Cerebral Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

PURPOSE: Ischemic stroke is the second leading cause of death and the third leading cause of disability worldwide. Salvianolic acid B (SAB), a water-soluble phenolic acid derived from the traditional Chinese medicine Salvia miltiorrhiza, exerted protective effects on cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury. However, the efficacy of SAB is seriously hindered by poor blood brain barrier (BBB) permeability and short biological half-life in plasma. Brain targeted biomimetic nanoparticle delivery systems offer much promise in overcoming these limitations. METHODS: A brain targeted biomimetic nanomedi
