PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The purpose of this experimental work was to obtain a radiographical assessment of the effect of the compression achieved with the Herbert screw due to its different thread diameters by comparing the real and expected reduction of interfragment gap (IFG) on cadaver bones. To better understand and define the limits of this "self-compressing" effect and to study the usefulness of screw sizes smaller than the scaphoid, we measured the maximal and mean reduction of IFG without using the instrumentation.

A new technique of split pectoralis major tendon transfer (sternal head) for symptomatic scapular winging is shown. Whereas other authors use a lengthening with autogenous grafts, we prefer a direct attachment of the split pectoralis major tendon. With the use of an anterior and a posterior incision, the tendon of the sternal head of the pectoralis major is mobilized and transferred directly to the inferior angle of the scapula. A developmental anomaly of the long head of the biceps tendon was found in a cadaveric shoulder. Findings on arthroscopy, routine MR imaging, and MR arthrography were compared and correlated with results of anatomic dissection. MR arthrography appears to be a very good diagnostic imaging method for depicting this anomaly prior to arthroscopy.

Percutaneous scaphoid fracture fixation has many advantages over the open method of fixation. We describe the anatomical basis for a safe percutaneous approach.
