Cross-sectional comparison of health care delivery and reimbursement between segregated and nonsegregated communities in Hungary.

INTRODUCTION: Spatially segregated, socio-economically deprived communities in Europe are at risk of being neglected in terms of health care. In Hungary, poor monitoring systems and poor knowledge on the health status of people in these segregated areas prevent the development of well-informed effective interventions for these vulnerable communities. AIMS: We used data available from National Health Insurance Fund Management to better describe health care performance in segregated communities and to develop more robust monitoring systems. METHODS: A cross-sectional study using 2020 health ca

Older adult drug overdose: an application of latent class analysis to identify prevention opportunities.

BACKGROUND: Older adult overdose death rates have increased significantly in recent years. However, research for prevention of drug overdose death specific to older adults is limited. Our objective is to identify profiles based on missed intervention points (touchpoints) to inform prevention of future older adult unintentional overdose deaths. METHODS: We used latent class analysis methods to identify profiles of decedents aged 55 + years in the Illinois Statewide Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System. This system collects data on 92.6% of all unintentional overdose deaths in Illinois

Adherence to universal screening for group B Streptococcus in pregnancy and prevalence of colonised pregnancies in Caserta province, Italy.

Group B Streptococcus (Streptococcus agalactiae; GBS) infection is a significant contributor to neonatal morbidity and mortality. In the early 1970s, the neonatal mortality rate for infants with invasive GBS disease was 55%. With the adoption of the first medical community guidelines to prevent GBS infection in the 1990s, the mortality rate decreased to approximately 5%. The main obstetric procedure for preventing vertical transmission of GBS infection involves universal screening of pregnant women using a vaginal-rectal swab (VRS) to identify those eligible for intrapartum antibiotic prophyla

Comparison of 2 Methods for Estimating Multiple Sclerosis-Related Mortality.

Background and objectivesDetermining whether multiple sclerosis (MS) causes death is challenging. Our objective was to contrast 2 frameworks to estimate probabilities of death attributed to MS (PMS) and other causes (Pother): the cause-specific framework (CSF), which requires the causes of death, and the excess mortality framework (EMF), which does not.MethodsWe used data from the Observatoire Français de la Sclérose en Plaques (OFSEP, n = 37,524) and from a comparative subset where causes of death were available (4,004 women with relapsing-onset MS [R-MS]). In CSF, the probabilities were esti

Evaluating the impact of naloxone dispensation at public health vending machines in Clark County, Nevada.

INTRODUCTION: Implementing public health vending machines (PHVMs) is an evidence-based strategy for mitigating substance use-associated morbidity and mortality via the dispensation of essential supplies to people who use drugs, including overdose prevention resources. PHVMs have been implemented throughout the world; however, their implementation in the United States (US) is a recent phenomenon. In 2017, Trac-B Exchange (a syringe services program in Clark County, Nevada) installed three PHVMs. In 2019, naloxone dispensation was launched at PHVMs in Clark County. The purpose of this research i

Reducing Birth Defects by Decreasing the Prevalence of Maternal Chronic Diseases-Evaluated by Linked National Registration Dataset.

Birth defects (BDs) are an important cause of abortion, stillbirth, and infant mortality that may cause lifelong disability. The defects can be caused by genetics, environmental exposure, or maternal chronic diseases. We conducted a study to analyze the association between maternal chronic diseases and BDs and to evaluate the effect of decreasing the prevalence of maternal chronic diseases on reducing BDs. The data of newborns and their mothers were concatenated and analyzed from three national population databases: the National Health Insurance Research Database, the Birth Certificate Applica

5-Year Survival after Endobronchial Coil Implantation: Secondary Analysis of the First Randomised Controlled Trial, RESET.

BACKGROUND: Lung volume reduction surgery is a proven treatment for emphysematous patients with hyperinflation, but the precarious health of candidates has prompted development of less invasive approaches. Bronchoscopic implanted endobronchial coils, shape-memory nitinol filaments, shrink emphysematous lung tissue to restore elastic recoil and to tether airways to maintain patency. Studies have demonstrated an acceptable safety profile and improvements in lung function, exercise capacity, and quality of life out to 3 years. Volume reduction is key. However, data for longer-term survival are li

Thyroid function, renal events and mortality in chronic kidney disease patients: the German Chronic Kidney Disease study.

BACKGROUND: Hypothyroidism and low free triiodothyronine (FT3) syndrome [low FT3 levels with normal thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)] have been associated with reduced kidney function cross-sectionally in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients with severely reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) or end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). Results on the prospective effects of impaired thyroid function on renal events and mortality for patients with severely reduced eGFR or from population-based cohorts are conflicting. Here we evaluated the association between thyroid and kidney function
