Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is one of the most common pediatric malignancies, with vincristine (VCR) being a key chemotherapeutic agent in its treatment. The present review aims to assess the risk factors, clinical manifestations, and management strategies of VCR-induced neurotoxicity in patients with ALL. A systematic search of the literature was performed using PubMed, Scopus, and CINAHL Ultimate. Inclusion criteria encompassed studies involving ALL patients treated with VCR, reporting neurotoxicity outcomes. The study was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. From 4310 articles

The cestode Echinococcus multilocularis is the causative agent of alveolar echinococcosis, a fatal zoonotic parasitic disease of the northern hemisphere. Red foxes are the main reservoir hosts and, likely, the main drivers of the geographic spread of the disease in Europe. Knowledge of genetic relationships among E. multilocularis isolates at a European scale is key to understanding the dispersal characteristics of E. multilocularis. Hence, the present study aimed to describe the genetic diversity of E. multilocularis isolates obtained from different host species in 19 European countries. Base…

Key parasite transmission parameters are difficult to obtain from elusive wild animals. For Echinococcus multilocularis, the causative agent of alveolar echinococcosis (AE), the red fox is responsible for most of the environmental contamination in Europe. The identification of individual spreaders of E. multilocularis environmental contamination is crucial to improving our understanding of the ecology of parasite transmission in areas of high endemicity and optimising the effectiveness of prevention and control measures in the field. Genetic faecal sampling appears to be a feasible method to g…

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a rare but severe disease that affects more than 18,000 people worldwide per year. The complete sequencing of the mitochondrial genome of Echinococcus multilocularis has made it possible to study the genetic diversity of the parasite and its spatial and temporal evolution. We amplified the whole mitochondrial genome by PCR, using one uniplex and two multiplex reactions to cover the 13,738 bp of the mitogenome, and then sequenced the amplicons with Illumina technology. In total, 113 samples from Europe, Asia, the Arctic and North America were analyzed. Three majo…

Non-viral infections of the liver are rare to very rare compared to viral infections. They can be caused by various bacteria, helminths, protozoa, and fungi, often leading to liver involvement during dissemination. Some of these infections affect in particular immunocompromised individuals, while others need to be considered in the differential diagnostic work-up in patients returning from tropical countries. In cases where the infection occurs through oral ingestion of eggs, such as in cystic and alveolar echinococcosis, the liver is often the most commonly affected organ. Due to the diversit…

Background: Brucellosis is a major global public health problem. Brucellosis usually coinfects with zoonoses because of their similar reservoir and infection routes. Materials and Methods: Here, we present a patient who was diagnosed with coinfecting with liver cyst and brucellosis. Results: A 57-year-old female farmer was hospitalized with right hip joint pain approximately 4 weeks earlier. The patient reported a history of hydatid cysts and a family history of brucellosis. Abdominal computerized tomography and ultrasonography revealed a liver hydatid cyst. The standard agglutination test tit

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is an emergent neglected disease affecting human and animals in Egypt with a wide distribution and incidence. This study aimed to evaluate the use of a polyclonal antibody-based sandwich ELISA in the detection of Echinococcus granulosus antigen in human and camel sera. Hydatid cyst protoscoleces antigen (PsAg) was isolated from hydatid cysts collected from naturally infected camel livers and lungs. PsAg was used for immunization of rabbits to raise IgG polyclonal antibodies (IgG PsAb). IgG PsAb were then precipitated, purified using Protein-A Sepharose gel and labele…

Liver abscess (LA) is a significant health concern worldwide, particularly in tropical regions such as India, and is usually pyogenic or amoebic in origin. In rare cases it can be caused by parasites. We present two children with difficult-to-treat LAs, revealing underlying parasitic infections as the causative agents, implicated by eosinophilia, elevated immunoglobulin-E levels and exposure to domestic animals. In the first case, disseminated echinococcosis was diagnosed through imaging, serology and histopathology. The second case showed a relationship between LAs and Toxocara infection, evi…

BACKGROUND: Hepatic abscesses represent infections of the liver parenchyma from bacteria, fungi, and parasitic organisms. Trends in both abscess microbiology and management of abscesses (infective collections) have changed over the past decade. There is a paucity of published data regarding the clinicopathological features of liver abscesses in sub-Saharan Africa and other low-income and middle-income countries.
AIM: To evaluate the clinical presentations of liver abscesses and hydatid liver disease at two South African tertiary-level hospitals.
METHODS: Information accessed from electronic

INTRODUCTION: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a neglected tropical disease caused by the larval stages of Echinococcus granulosus (E. granulosus). MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs acting as mediators in host-parasite interaction. Recently, numerous studies have been conducted on miRNAs in infectious diseases; however, little data are available about the role of miRNAs in pathogenesis and early diagnosis of CE.
METHODS: The current study evaluated the expression of four E. granulosus-derived miRNAs, including egr-miR-125,5p, egr-let-7,5p, egr-miR-2, and egr-miR-71 in fibrotic and heal…

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a neglected zoonotic disease of worldwide geographical distribution. CE is most common in underdeveloped and herding communities where people survive on animal husbandry and agricultural activities. The prevalence of CE in livestock and its risk factors are widely underreported, because of inefficient surveillance systems. The aim of this study was to evaluate the epidemiological characteristics and prevalence of CE in cattle in Punjab, Pakistan. Data were collected from slaughterhouses from September 2021 to February 2022. Ante- and postmortem examination and cys…

Hydatidosis is currently considered a public health problem in Peru. It is a parasitic infection transmitted by the ingestion of eggs of Echinococcus granulosus. The most involved organs are the liver and lungs, with spleen involvement being rare. We present the case of a young pregnant woman with abdominal pain and a sensation of mass in the left hypochondrium. The ultrasound study revealed a multiloculated cystic image in the left hemiabdomen, and a viable fetus. She underwent cesarean section, followed by exploratory laparotomy, which revealed a giant spleen tumor that, according to the ana…

Cystic echinococcosis (hydatidosis) is a world-wide zoonotic disease of mainly humans, livestock and dogs, caused by Echinococcus granulosus. The disease can negatively impact food production and animal welfare and causes socio-economic hardship. Here, we aimed to identify the local bovine hydatid cyst fluid (BHCF) antigen for developing a sero-diagnostic assay to be used for the pre-slaughter screening of food animals. In total, 264 bovines approved for slaughter in Pakistan were subjected to serum collection and post-mortem screening for hydatid cysts. These cysts were assessed microscopical…

Hydatidosis is a parasitic and zoonotic infection caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus. Cysts of this parasite involve almost all the organs of the human body, especially the liver and lungs. Asymptomatic cases may develop into symptomatic pulmonary hydatidosis due to the rupture of hydatid cysts. Lophomonas, as causative agents of pulmonary lophomoniasis, is an emerging protozoan that mostly infects the lower respiratory airways. Clinical symptoms of these two diseases can mostly be overlapped. Herein, we describe the rare case of comorbidity of a ruptured cystic echinococcos…
