Cognitive and Behavioural Associations of Visual and Hearing Impairments Across the Lifespan in People With Down Syndrome, a Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Hearing and visual impairments are common in individuals with Down syndrome (DS), yet it remains unclear whether sensory impairments are associated with cognitive and behavioural functioning such as language, memory and socialisation. This literature review examines those associations. METHODS: A scoping review of four databases was conducted to examine associations between sensory impairments and cognitive or behavioural outcomes in individuals with DS. Study evidence was assessed based on design, sample size, assessment modalities and statistical significance. RESULTS: Of 1471

Clinical Considerations for Integrating Ethical Principles of Beneficence in the Development of Evidence-Based Interventions: The case of Pediatric Misophonia.

Misophonia is a condition involving decreased tolerance and intense responses to specific sounds, often those that are human-generated and repetitive in nature. Misophonia frequently onsets during childhood and is associated with significant distress, impairment, and diminished quality of life. While misophonia research remains nascent and no definitive practice guidelines exist at present, extant studies offer several promising potential avenues in intervention development for adults with misophonia. However, such research is comparatively limited for youth. Before widespread adoption of prom

Cortical structural and functional coupling during development and implications for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Functional connectivity is scaffolded by the structural connections of the brain. Disruptions of either structural or functional connectivity can lead to deficits in cognitive functions and increase the risk for neurodevelopmental disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). To date, very little research has examined the association between structural and functional connectivity in typical development, while no studies have attempted to understand the development of structure-function coupling in children with ADHD. 175 individuals (84 typically developing children and 91

Exploring the role of the self in disgust-related psychopathologies.

While clinical research on disgust relies on nonclinical research, the framework of disgust as an immune mechanism is not as central in clinical research. The immune framework for disgust may be integrated into clinical research by acknowledging the role of the self as the critical element protected by the immune system. In this review, we offer the premise that at the center of all disgust-related behaviors, thoughts, and cognitions is an attempt to protect the self (i.e., "disgust is self-centered" or DISC). We offer evidence in support of DISC and explore the relevance of DISC to clinical r

Spoken Language Alterations can Predict Phenoconversion in Isolated Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder: A Multicenter Study.

OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the relationship between speech and language impairment and outcome in a multicenter cohort of isolated/idiopathic rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (iRBD). METHODS: Patients with iRBD from 7 centers speaking Czech, English, German, French, and Italian languages underwent a detailed speech assessment at baseline. Story-tale narratives were transcribed and linguistically annotated using fully automated methods based on automatic speech recognition and natural language processing algorithms, leading to the 3 distinctive linguistic and 2 acoustic pat

Childhood symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood attention-deficit /hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is known to be associated with adult Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). We investigated if any of the subdimensions of childhood ADHD, that is, impulsivity, inattention, or hyperactivity was more prominent in this association. METHODS: In a nation-wide cohort (N = 13,330), we utilized parent reported symptoms of childhood ADHD and clinically ascertained adult BPD diagnoses. The summed total scores of ADHD symptoms and its three subdimensions were used and standardized for effect size comparison. Associations were analyz

OCD and Comorbid Depression: Assessment, Conceptualization, and Cognitive Behavioral Treatment.

Many individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) also meet criteria for additional diagnoses. Among the most common co-occurring diagnoses are mood disorders-especially depression. This article focuses on the comorbidity between OCD and major depression. After discussing nature of OCD and depression, the rates and clinical impact of depression on OCD, the conceptualization, assessment, and treatment of OCD when it appears along with depression is covered in detail. The derivation and implementation of a cognitive behavioral treatment program specifically for depressed OCD patients is

Predictors of symptom reduction following intensive weekend treatment for panic disorder: An exploratory study of veterans.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence implicates intensive panic control treatment (IPCT) - a full panic control treatment protocol compressed into a single weekend - as a viable alternative for Veterans with panic disorder who are unable or unwilling to commit to standard weekly cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). However, no studies to date have examined pretreatment predictors of response to IPCT. Knowledge of such predictors may be important for understanding which Veterans are best suited for IPCT relative to standard CBT. METHODS: Participants were military Veterans with a primary diagnosis of pa

A new screening test for idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus using bimanual coordination: A preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: The clinical spectrum of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) comprises the triad of gait disturbance, cognitive impairment, and urinary incontinence. However, motor abnormalities involving the upper extremities in iNPH patients have few quantitative studies. OBJECTIVE: The present study was designed to quantitatively assess bimanual tapping tasks in iNPH patients and to compare with the control groups. METHODS: The subjects were divided into three groups: iNPH patients, older healthy group, and younger healthy group. The tasks were three synchronization finger-to-thum

Efficacy and acceptability of interventions for co-occurring PTSD and SUD: A meta-analysis.

Over the past 20 years, numerous treatments addressing comorbid Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Substance Use Disorder (SUD) have been developed and tested. The current meta-analysis examined the efficacy and acceptability of the two central treatment types- trauma-focused and non-trauma-focused - compared with all comparators and with cognitive-behavioral manualized SUD treatments immediately post-treatment and at longest follow-up. Twenty-eight randomized clinical trials (N = 3247) were included. There were small to large within-group effects for all forms of active treatment (gs =

Premotor Parkinson's disease: Overview of clinical symptoms and current diagnostic methods.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by typical motor symptoms. However, recent studies show several non-motor features that may precede the development of the motor symptoms of PD. The best known premotor symptoms include hyposmia, REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), constipation, and depression; other symptoms are excessive daytime somnolence, orthostatic hypotension and symptomatic hypotension, erectile or urinary dysfunction, musculoskeletal symptoms, pain, and global cognitive deficit. In this review, we summarize currently available diagnostic methods for these symptoms. We also brie

Well-Being Therapy in Anxiety Disorders.

In almost all treatments for prevalent psychiatric conditions, particular attention has been devoted to stress and its consequences; this has led to an involuntary and unavoidable reinforcement of negative aspects of life. Because of the important influence of individual and cultural influences on positive health, well-being is a challenge from a clinical and scientific perspective and interventions aimed at enhancing it represent an area of growing interest for the future of clinical practice and research. Well-being therapy (WBT) is a short-term psychotherapeutic strategy aimed at enhancing

Psychopharmacology of traumatic brain injury.

The pathophysiology of traumatic brain injury (TBI) can be highly variable, involving functional and/or structural damage to multiple neuroanatomical networks and neurotransmitter systems. This wide-ranging potential for physiologic injury is reflected in the diversity of neurobehavioral and neurocognitive symptoms following TBI. Here, we aim to provide a succinct, clinically relevant, up-to-date review on psychopharmacology for the most common sequelae of TBI in the postacute to chronic period. Specifically, treatment for neurobehavioral symptoms (depression, mania, anxiety, agitation/irritab

The status of telerehabilitation in neurological applications.

We systematically reviewed the evidence for the effectiveness of tele-neurorehabilitation (TNR) applications. The review included recent reports on rehabilitation for any disability associated with a neurological deficit or condition. Study quality was assessed using an approach that considered both study performance and study design. Judgements were made on whether each application had been successful, and whether further data were needed to establish the application as suitable for routine use. Nineteen credible studies that reported patient outcomes or administrative changes were identified

Neuropsychological profile of agenesis of the corpus callosum: a systematic review.

Developmental absence (agenesis) of the corpus callosum (AgCC) is a common brain malformation that presents in isolation or in association with other conditions. Variability in aspects of neuropsychological functioning has been reported in small samples of individuals. This study aimed to systematically review the literature to characterize the profile and severity of cognitive impairments in individuals with AgCC across development. A mean general intellectual ability was calculated and neuropsychological functioning was qualitatively examined. We discuss methodological limitations of the lit

Neurocognitive functioning in the prodrome of mania--an exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive deficits have been well documented in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) after the first episode of mania. However, little is known about the presence of such deficits prior to the initial manic episode. METHODS: Participants were recruited from a cohort of 416 young people who were at ultra-high risk (UHR) for psychosis and were followed up between 4 and 13 years later. The current report is of 16 participants who developed BD over a mean follow-up period of 8.2 years (UHR-BD). Baseline demographic, clinical and neurocognitive assessment scores were compared with th

The effects of hypertension on the paediatric brain: a justifiable concern.

The prevalence of hypertension in children is increasing but its neurological effects are under-recognised. Here, we describe acute and chronic effects of childhood hypertension on the nervous system. Acute neurological involvement ranges from posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome to, possibly, infarction and haemorrhage. Children with chronic hypertension are likely to have learning disabilities and deficiencies in executive function, which are potentially reversible with antihypertensive treatment. These cognitive defects may be secondary to abnormal regulation of cerebral blood flow.

Non-credible language deficits following mild traumatic brain injury.

Identification of non-credible memory and other cognitive symptoms has received widespread attention within the past two decades. However, minimal information is available regarding patterns of non-credible language symptoms. We present the case of a 36-year-old female civil litigant who displayed delayed onset, severe, relatively focal speech and language symptoms, including difficulties with articulation, dysfluent speech, expressive language impairments with minor receptive difficulties, and lack of prosody, subsequent to a minor head trauma. On neuropsychological evaluation 3 years post in
