The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the lack of antiviral agents available for human use, while the complexity of the physiological changes caused by coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) imposed the prescription of multidrug pharmacotherapy to treat infected patients. In a significant number of cases, it was necessary to add antibiotics to the prescription to decrease the risk of co-infections, preventing the worsening of the patient's condition. However, the precautionary use of antibiotics corroborated to increase bacterial resistance. Since the development of vaccines for COVID-19, the pandemic scenario has

The progressive increase in antibiotic resistance in recent decades calls for urgent development of new antibiotics and antibiotic stewardship programs to help select appropriate treatments with the goal of minimising further emergence of resistance and to optimise clinical outcomes. Three new tetracycline-class antibiotics, eravacycline, omadacycline, and tigecycline, have been approved within the past 15 years, and represent a new era in the use of tetracyclines. These drugs overcome the two main mechanisms of acquired tetracycline-class resistance and exhibit a broad spectrum of in vitro ac

BACKGROUND: A simple hysterectomy is considered the definitive treatment modality for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). However, it is associated with recurrence of vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (VAIN) of up to 7.4%. We sought to determine recurrence rates of VAIN, in women living with HIV (WLWH) and non-infected women.
METHODS: This was a descriptive retrospective review of patients who received a simple hysterectomy for CIN between January 2015 and December 2017 in Pietermaritzburg.
RESULTS: Fifty-eight files were reviewed. Forty-two (72.4%) WLWH were seen; amongst those, 76.2%

OBJECTIVE: Prematurity is the most important prognostic factor for infants born following preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM). Therefore, when PPROM occurs between 22 and 33 weeks of gestation, prolonging pregnancy is recommended. Determination of management strategies requires screening for the presence of intra-amniotic infection or inflammation at the time of PPROM diagnosis. If intra-amniotic infection/inflammation is not detected, it is important to monitor the patient to diagnose any new infection/inflammation. We examined the period from PPROM to secondary intra-amniotic infe

INTRODUCTION: Centers of excellence and bundled payment models have driven perioperative optimization and surgical site infection (SSI) prevention with decolonization protocols and antibiotic prophylaxis strategies. We sought to evaluate time trends in the incidence of deep SSI and its causative organisms after six orthopaedic procedures in a US-based integrated healthcare system.
METHODS: We conducted a population-level time-trend study using data from Kaiser Permanente's orthopaedic registries. All patients who underwent primary anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), total knee a

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a highly morphic, retrovirus that rapidly evolves through mutation as well as recombination. Because of the immunocompromised status in HIV patients, there is often a higher chance of acquiring different secondary infections followed by liver cirrhosis, hepatitis B & C, and HIV-associated nephropathy. The current study was conducted to see the prevalence of secondary infections, hematological and biochemical markers for liver and renal associated diseases, and to detect the envelope gene (GP41) in newly diagnosed HIV patients. A total of 37 samples wer

OBJECTIVES: COVID-19 is a transmissible illness triggered by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Since its onset in late 2019 in Wuhan city of China, it continues to spread universally, leading to an ongoing pandemic that shattered all efforts to restrain it. On the other hand, in Africa, the COVID-19 infection may be influenced by malaria coinfection. Hence, in this review article, we aimed to give a comprehensive account of the similarities between COVID-19 and malaria in terms of symptoms, clinical, immunological, and molecular perspectives.
METHODOLOGY: In this a…

To establish a plasma model to predict the risk of liver fibrosis in HIV/HBV co-infected individuals. Quantitative liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry(LC-MS/MS) was used to identify differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in plasma collected from HIV/HBV co-infected individuals with and without liver fibrosis. In total, 97 DEPs were identified, among which 11 were further validated as potential biomarkers, with immunoglobulin and complement components being the most common proteins. These markedly altered proteins were found to mediate pathophysiological pathways, including humoral

Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), a systemic mycosis caused by the fungus Paracoccidioides spp. is the most prevalent fungal infection among immunocompetent patients in Latin America. The estimated frequency of central nervous system (CNS) involvement among the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/PCM-positive population is 2.5%. We aimed to address the impact of neuroparacoccidioidomycosis (NPCM) and HIV/NPCM co-infection on the tight junctions (TJ) and adherens junction (AJ) proteins of the CNS. Four CNS formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue specimens were studied: NPCM, NPCM/HIV co-infec

BACKGROUND: Human pegivirus 1 (HPgV-1) is a Positive-sense single-stranded RNA (+ ssRNA) virus, discovered in 1995 as a Flaviviridae member, and the closest human virus linked to HCV. In comparison to HCV, HPgV-1 seems to be lymphotropic and connected to the viral group that infects T and B lymphocytes. HPgV-1 infection is not persuasively correlated to any known human disease; nevertheless, multiple studies have reported a connection between chronic HPgV-1 infection and improved survival in HPgV-1/HIV co-infected patients with a delayed and favorable impact on HIV infection development. While

BACKGROUND: Bacterial opportunistic infections are common in people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA). Besides HIV-TB co-infection, lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) due to multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria cause significant morbidity and mortality among PLHA. This study identified bacterial co-infection of the lower respiratory tract and detected plasmid-mediated blaTEM and blaCTX-M genes among Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamase (ESBL) producing isolates from sputum samples in PLHA.
METHODS: A total of 263 PLHA with LRTIs were enrolled in this study, out of which, 50 were smokers, 70 had prev

Although other co-viral infections could also be considered influencing factors, cervical human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the main cause of cervical cancer. Metagenomics have been employed in the NGS era to study the microbial community in each habitat. Thus, in this investigation, virome capture sequencing was used to examine the virome composition in the HPV-infected cervix. Based on the amount of HPV present in each sample, the results revealed that the cervical virome of HPV-infected individuals could be split into two categories: HPV-dominated (HD; ≥60%) and non-HPV-dominated (NHD

(1) Background: Respiratory co-infections with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and other viruses are common, but data on clinical outcomes and laboratory biomarkers indicative of disease severity are limited. We aimed to compare clinical outcomes and laboratory biomarkers of patients with SARS-CoV-2 alone to those of patients with SARS-CoV-2 and either rhinovirus or adenovirus. (2) Methods: Hospitalized patients co-infected with SARS-CoV-2 and rhinovirus and patients co-infected with SARS-CoV-2 and adenovirus were matched to patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 alone.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is an infectious viral disease, the pathogenesis of which is still not fully understood. Additionally, TBE can be complicated by co-infections with various bacteria that are also transmitted by ticks, which can affect the proper diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, the aim of the study was to evaluate changes in the plasma phospholipid (PL) and ceramide (CER) profile of patients with TBE and patients with bacterial co-infection (B. burgdorferi or A. phagocytophilum) in relation to healthy subjects. For this purpose, a high-resolution LC-QTOF-MS/MS platform as well

The aim of this study was to estimate the molecular prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii, Neospora caninum and the co-infection by both Apicomplexan parasites in uterus tissues of cows. PCR was used to detect T. gondii and N. caninum DNA in uterus from 140 uteri of slaughtered cows in the regional slaughterhouse of Béja (Northwest Tunisia). Positive PCR products were sequenced and used for the phylogenetic analysis. The overall molecular prevalence of T. gondii and N. caninum in cows' uterus was 5 and 15.57%, respectively. Co-infection prevalence by the two parasites was estimated to be 2.85%. Risk

Equine piroplasmosis is caused by apicomplexan parasites, namely, Babesia caballi and Theileria equi, which are transmitted to equids principally through ticks. To ascertain the exposure of equines to agents of equine piroplasms, we tested serum samples collected from horses (n = 272) and donkeys (n = 170) in North-Western Nigeria for the presence of antibodies against B. caballi and T. equi using IFAT and ELISA. The seroprevalence of T. equi in the horses determined using IFAT and ELISA was 48.89% and 45.96%, respectively, while for B. caballi, it was 6.3% and 0.4%, respectively. For T. equi,
