The thyroid gland is an uncommon site for metastatic disease but cases have been well-documented in the literature, particularly in autopsy series. A retrospective review of surgical pathology and autopsy pathology database for patients with metastatic carcinoma to the thyroid was performed at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center between January 1993 to January 2013. We identified a total of 10 patients with metastatic carcinoma to the thyroid; 6 were in surgical pathology specimens out of a total of 1,295 thyroid carcinoma (0.46 %) and 4 were diagnosed at autopsy out of a total of 2

OBJECTIVE: The invitation to population screening is based on age criteria in many countries. Screening is not offered to younger or older participants, because the benefits in these age groups do not outweigh the harms. One could argue that it is not so much age that determines the benefits but the risk of developing preclinical and treatable cancer. Cancer risk varies with age but is also affected by other factors.
METHODS: We performed a systematic review for risk models for the three types of cancer for which population screening programs exist: breast, cervical and colon cancer. We used

UNLABELLED: Atypical metastasis, such as splenic and renal metastasis is rare in colorectal cancer. There have been case reports of colorectal cancer patients with isolated splenic metastasis, even after years of surgery in the literature.
AIM: To report two colorectal cancer cases with atypical metastasis.
RESULTS: The first patient was a 58-year old man who had isolated splenic metastasis after 20 months of surgery. The other one was a 51-year old male patient with both lung and renal metastasis at rectal cancer diagnosis. Splenic and renal metastases have been histopathologically document

A monogenic inheritance, mainly seen as a dominant pattern, accounts for 5-10% of all cancer cases. The increased knowledge and identification of high-risk genes have led to a need for specialized cancer family clinic was the expression used by Eeles and Murday. The Oncogenetic Clinic at the University Hospital in Lund was started in 1993 and the authors' 10-year experience is summarized in this paper. The clinic offers service to the South Swedish Health Care Region comprising a total of 1.6 million inhabitants. During these first 10 years a total of 1059 individuals from 789 families have be

PURPOSE: Cytological examination of ascitic fluid is critical for clinical management of patients with peritoneal or pelvic diseases. Such morphological examination can only achieve a sensitivity of <62%, and thus a molecular test that is able to distinguish benign versus malignant ascites could be clinically useful. In this study we determined the presence of allelic imbalance (AI) in tumor-released DNA in ascitic supernatant by directly counting the alleles using a newly developed technology, digital single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Allelic status was asse

The HER-2/neu oncogene is localized to chromosome 17q and shares significant homology with the epidermal growth factor receptor. As a result of its potential role in the selection of therapy, HER-2/neu testing has reached near-standard-of-practice status in breast cancer. There is considerable interest in HER-2/neu as a prognostic factor and target of therapy in tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. In this review of HER-2/neu expression in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinomas of the esophagus, stomach, and colon, a wide range of expression of HER-2/neu from 0 to 83% likely r

BACKGROUND: Over the past two decades developments in imaging have changed the assessment of patients with anorectal disease.
METHODS: The literature on imaging techniques for anorectal diseases was reviewed over the period 1980-1999.
RESULTS: For the staging of primary rectal tumours, phased array magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be regarded as the most appropriate single technique. The combination of endosonography or endoluminal MRI with ultrasonography or spiral computed tomography yields similar results. All techniques have limitations both for local staging and in the assessment of

The combination of mitomycin C, 5-fluorouracil, and cytosine arabinoside (MFC), which had a marked synergistic effect in the treatment of L1210 mouse leukemia, was used clinically against advanced cancer. Response was assessed according to criteria proposed by Karnofsky. Of 90 patients with various kinds of solid tumors, 17 (19%) had I-B responses and 20 (22%) had I-A responses. Either I-A or I-B responses were observed in 15 (55%) of 27 patients with cancer of the stomach and in nine (60%) of 15 patients with cancer of the colon, indicating that the MFC combination is especially effective aga

BACKGROUND: Early postoperative sleep disturbance is common after major abdominal cancer surgery and may hinder recovery. Whether analgesic strategy influences early sleep outcomes in gastric and colorectal cancer surgery remains uncertain.
METHODS: We conducted a single center retrospective cohort study of consecutive patients undergoing curative intent gastric or colorectal cancer surgery. Patients received postoperative analgesia with epidural analgesia, regional blockade, or intravenous patient-controlled analgesia (IV PCIA). The primary outcome was early postoperative sleep disturbance.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: There is clear evidence of reduced morbidity and mortality from regular colonoscopy programs in patients with Lynch syndrome (LS). Today, also individuals with empirically increased risks of colorectal cancer (CRC) are offered colonoscopic surveillance. The aim was to compare the findings at the first screening colonoscopy in LS carriers, and individuals with an increased risk of bowel cancer due to family history of CRC with a control population.
METHODS: Altogether 1397 individuals with an increased risk for CRC were divided in four risk groups: one with LS carriers and

Families at high risk for Lynch syndrome can effectively be recognised by microsatellite instability (MSI) testing. The aim of the present study is to compare the effectiveness of a MSI test for the identification of Lynch syndrome in patients selected by a pathologist mainly based on young age at diagnosis (MSI-testing-indicated-by-a-Pathologist; MIPA), with that of patients selected by a clinical geneticist mainly based on family history (MSI-testing-indicated-by-Family-History; MIFH). Patients with a Lynch syndrome associated tumour were selected using MIPA (n=362) or MIFH (n=887). Germline

OBJECTIVES: Colorectal cancer (CRC) occurs rarely in young individuals (<45 yr) and represents one of the criteria for suspecting hereditary cancer families. In this study we evaluated clinical features and molecular pathways (chromosomal instability [CIN] and microsatellite instability [MSI]) in early-onset CRC of 71 patients.
METHODS: Detailed family and personal history were obtained for each patient. Expression of APC, beta-catenin, p53, MLH1, MSH2, and MSH6 genes was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. MSI analysis was performed and constitutional main mutations of the mismatch repair (MM

BACKGROUND: Numerous recent studies have explored the association between metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and the risk of various extrahepatic cancers. However, the conclusions were inconclusive. The aim of this study was to clarify this relationship by conducting a robust meta-analysis.
METHODS: Systematic searches were conducted on PubMed, Embase and Web of Science databases to identify relevant cohort studies published prior to February 2024. Hazard ratios (HRs) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were combined using a random-effects

Universal screening for mismatch repair deficiency (dMMR) in cancer is increasingly being implemented to detect Lynch syndrome and aid in treatment decisions. The mismatch repair (MMR) immunohistochemistry (IHC) concordance rate between primary colorectal cancer (CRC) and metastasis is unknown. At times, only metastatic tumor is available for screening (lymph node, liver, lung etc.) rather than the primary tumor. Therefore, it is important to confirm that tissue from metastases can be used for screening for dMMR. We tested dMMR primary and metastatic tumor to assess concordance between the two

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Polypectomy in the colon has been shown to prevent colorectal cancer in both the general population and in familial colorectal cancer. Individuals with a family history of colorectal cancer have an increased risk of the disease. Over a period of 10 years, 304 subjects at risk were included in ongoing surveillance with regular colonoscopies. To compile the medical findings and experience generated during this period, a retrospective cross sectional study was performed.
SUBJECTS: Subjects were classified into three family groups: families with hereditary non-polyposis color

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Stage II CRC poses a clinical challenge due to its heterogeneous outcomes, with 15-20% of patients experiencing recurrence. Current prognostic models based on clinicopathologic features lack sufficient precision, highlighting the need for new molecular markers. In this study, we employed an integrative TMT-based proteomics strategy to identify biomarkers of recurrence in stage II CRC. We analyzed paired formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues and small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) from stage II recu

Despite advances in adjuvant therapy for colorectal cancer, tumor relapses, often driven by minimal residual disease, remain a formidable clinical challenge. The cancer stem cell hypothesis provides a key framework for understanding this problem, positing that a small, therapy-resistant subpopulation of cells drives recurrence. To elucidate the role of these cells, we developed LGR5-specific monoclonal antibodies and a high-sensitivity immunofluorescence method to visualize the stem cell marker LGR5 in clinical tumors. Furthermore, we established a unique colorectal cancer cell line, PLR123, w

BACKGROUND: We aimed to characterize the outcomes of patients undergoing resection of solitary colorectal liver metastases (CLM), including patterns of recurrence and usage of salvage therapy.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 535 consecutive patients who underwent resection of solitary CLM between 1999 and 2021 was performed from an institutional database. Extrahepatic disease and prior liver-directed therapy were excluded. Salvage therapy consisted of repeat resection, ablation, or radiation of all sites of recurrence. Outcomes, overall survival (OS), recurrence-free survival, and hepati
