Etiologies of autism in a case-series from Tanzania.

Most autism has a genetic cause although post-encephalitis cases are reported. In a case-series (N = 20) from Tanzania, 14 met research criteria for autism. Three (M:F = 1:2) had normal development to age 22, 35, and 42 months, with onset of autism upon recovery from severe malaria, attended by prolonged high fever, convulsions, and in one case prolonged loss of consciousness. In four other cases (M:F = 3:1), the temporal relationship between onset of autism and severe infection was close, but possibly spurious since malaria is common in Tanzania and there were indications of abnormal developm

[Lance-Adams syndrome in patient with anoxic encephalopathy in the course of bronchial asthma].

Lance-Adams syndrome, described in 1963, is caused by anoxia of central nervous system, generally in the course of primary respiratory failure. It is characterized mainly by action myoclonus, associated cerebellar ataxia and very mild intellectual deficit. Occurrence of Lance-Adams syndrome is rare; about 100 cases have been described yet. The authors present the case of Lance-Adams syndrome in 36-year-old woman with many years' bronchial asthma. Three times acute cardiopulmonary arrest appeared during status asthmaticus. After successful cardiopulmonary resuscitation action myoclonus develope

Krabbe disease--a case report.

Krabbe disease is an extremely rare condition with an incidence of 1 in 1,00,000 live births. It is caused by deficient activity of the Iysosomal hydrolase galactosylceramide beta-galactosidase. A 6 years old male weighing 12 kg, was brought to Rajah Muthiah Medical College and Hospital with complaints of convulsions. The full-term child was delivered by lower segment caesarean section to second-degree consanguineous parents. The baby cried immediately after birth. The child attained normal milestones till two years of age. Thereafter he lost his attained milestones. The child had dysmorphic f

Sleep-related hyperkinetic seizures: always a frontal onset?

Hyperkinetic seizures are considered a typical manifestation of nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy (NFLE). Patients with temporal lobe epilepsy with mainly sleep-related seizures have been described; however they commonly lack hyperkinetic activity and seizure frequency is low. We retrospectively analysed our population of 442 consecutive patients surgically treated between January 1996 and January 2004. Among these there were 25 patients with sleep-related hyperkinetic epileptic seizures, with a frontal lobe onset in 18 cases and a temporal lobe onset in 7. Patients with sleep-related hyperkinet

Neuropharmacological actions of panchagavya formulation containing Emblica officinalis Gaerth and Glycyrrhiza glabra Linn in mice.

A panchagavya Ayurvedic formulation containing E. officinalis, G. glabra, and cow's ghee was evaluated for its effect on pentobarbital-induced sleeping time, pentylenetetrazol-induced seizures, maximal electroshock-induced seizures, spontaneous motor activity, rota-rod performance (motor coordination) and antagonism to amphetamine in mice. The formulation (300, 500 mg/kg, po) produced a significant prolongation of pentobarbital-induced sleeping time and reduced spontaneous locomotor activity. The formulation also significantly antagonised the amphetamine induced hyper-locomotor activity (500,

[Postpartum seizures in 2 epileptic patients].

We report the cases of 2 women with epilepsy who suffered generalized postpartum seizures on the first day after giving birth. The first had a history of febrile convulsions in childhood and had a seizure in the 36th week of gestation due to sleep deprivation. She had received epidural analgesia for labor pain. The second patient had had her most recent crisis at the beginning of the third trimester of pregnancy. Both patients had low serum levels of antiepileptic drugs. The pharmacokinetics of antiepileptic drugs can change during pregnancy, making seizures more difficult to control. Serum le

Design and synthesis of some new derivatives of 3H-quinazolin-4-one with promising anticonvulsant activity.

A new series of 3-substituted (methyl, ethyl or phenyl)-3H-quinazolin-4-one derivatives (4a-l) were synthesized through condensation reaction of their potassium salts (3a-l) with methyl, ethyl and phenylisocyanate. The newly synthesized derivatives (4a-l) were evaluated for anticonvulsant activity. It was found that these compounds showed the highest anticonvulsant activity at low doses (50-100 mg kg(-1)), whereas at doses over 100 mg kg(-1) they showed a stimulant effect on the central nervous system that even potentiated the effect of the convulsive agent, pentylenetetrazole, in mice. A seri

Central inhibitory effect of Moringa oleifera root extract: possible role of neurotransmitters.

Effect of chronic treatment of standardized aqueous extract of Moringa oleifera (MO) root (100, 200, 300, 350, 400, 450 mg/kg; po) on penicillin (PCN) induced convulsion, locomotor behaviour, brain serotonin (5-HTT), dopamine (DA) and norepinephrine (NE) level was studied in Holtzman strain adult albino rats. The result revealed that pretreatment with MO inhibited PCN-induced seizure and markedly reduced locomotor activity. Chronic treatment with MO significantly increased the 5-HT and decreased the DA level in cerebral cortex (CC), midbrain (MB), caudate nucleus (CN) and cerebellum (CB). NE l

Central nervous system involvement in neonatal rotavirus infection.

Rotavirus is an ubiquitous virus associated with severe gastro-enteritis in children under 2 years of age. However, serious conditions, including central nervous system involvement, have been associated with rotavirus infection. We investigated the clinical signs and symptoms of rotavirus infection in 156 neonates, specifically focusing on neurological signs. Neurological signs identified were apnoea, jitteriness, convulsions and poor sucking. Of the 156 babies, 66 were rotavirus-positive and 90 rotavirus-negative. In the rotavirus-positive group, 19.7% manifested apnoea compared with 22.2% in

Hypoparathyroidism and facial dysmorphism as main symptoms of 22q.11 deletion syndrome.

A 12-year-old Japanese boy with mental retardation and facial dysmorphism developed frequent convulsions, and hypocalcemia due to hypoparathyroidism was recognized. Chromosomal analysis involving the fluorescence in situ hybridization method revealed a microdeletion of 22q11.2. However, other laboratory examinations revealed no cardiac anomaly, thymic hypoplasia, or cleft palate. It is well known that typical cases of 22q11 deletion syndrome have a cardiac anomaly, thymic hypoplasia and a cleft palate. However, the phenotype of 22q11 deletion syndrome is diverse, and hypoparathyroidism and fac

Neurological aspects of biological and chemical terrorism: a review for neurologists.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urge physicians to become familiar with chemical and biological weapons. Preparedness among neurologists is especially important because several of these agents affect the nervous system. This article reviews 4 agents that have a history of military or terrorist use: cyanide poisons, organophosphate poisons, botulinum toxin, and anthrax. Cyanide and organophosphate poisons are characterized by dose-dependent impairment of neurological function with nonspecific symptoms such as headache or dizziness at one end of the spectrum and convulsions and co

[Developmental changes in audiogenic epilepsy and myoclonus in KM rats].

The reaction to a single sound stimulation (a bell) applied daily and the time of the first appearance of myoclonus were recorded in Krushinsky-Molodkina (KM) rats of different ages (30, 60, and 150-200 days). The audiogenic seizures in adult animals were of short latency and always resulted in tonic convulsions, which were stable in their patten. In contrast, in young animals (in particular, in 30-day-old rats), the seizures were less pronounced and unstable. The daily sound stimulation produced a gradual development of myoclonic seizures in young and adult rats. In old rats, the stable myocl

[The effect of microwaves on the bioelectric brain activity].

The experiments on rats have shown that the effect of millimeter range electromagnetic radiation on the bioelectric brain activity is dependent on the initial functional state of central nervous system. Microwaves are able to cause a nonspecific electroencephalographic reaction of synchronization and probably the lower the bioelectric brain process dynamics of active rats. Enrichment of electrocorticograms with high-frequency rhythms and increase in degree of bioelectric brain dynamics can be observed in narcosis conditions. The appearance of biological resonance in the brain of narcotized rat

[MRI of the female pelvis: useful information for daily practice].

The MR findings of non-neoplastic gynecologic diseases were comprehensively reviewed. Pelvic inflammatory disease is a common benign disease affecting reproductive women, in which imaging findings are similar to those of malignant tumors of the adnexa. Torsion or rupture of benign ovarian masses can also mimic malignant ovarian tumors. Diagnostic keys to these conditions are presented in this review. The usefulness of dynamic contrast MRI in diagnosing ectopic pregnancy is also indicated. Placenta accreta is a catastrophic condition that occurs from labor to the postpartum period. Preliminary

[A case report of mirror writing with low perfusion of bilateral anterior cerebral arteries].

A 20-year-old female experienced temporary unintentional mirror writing associated with low perfusion of the bilateral anterior cerebral arteries. When she was 17 years old, she had developed multiple idiopathic intracerebral hemorrhages and right hemiparesis. At the age of 20, she had a generalized convulsion for which she was transferred to our department. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance images of the brain were obtained, but no fresh abnormal lesion could be detected. The following day, after she had recovered from postictal symptoms, she wrote mirror image words, and her mi

[Intra-arterial thrombolysis of a basilar vascular accident during coronary angiography].

The authors report the case of a 67 year old man with a previous history of aortobifemoral arterial graft who had unstable angina after carotid endarterectomy. Coronary angiography by the right brachial artery was complicated by a cerebrovascular accident with a reactive coma, convulsions and respiratory problems. Selective angiography of the right vertebral artery showed an image of occlusive thrombosis of the basilar artery. In view of the clinical state and angiographic appearances, the authors decided on immediate intra-arterial thrombolysis with Urokinase which dissolved the clot and rees

[Two neonates with vesicular skin lesions due to incontinentia pigmenti].

In two neonate girls with vesicular skin lesions, incontinentia pigmenti (Bloch-Sulzberger syndrome) was diagnosed. This rare X-linked dominant ectodermal disease can cause abnormalities in several organ systems. Most prominent are the dermatological abnormalities, developing in 4 stages: the vesicular stage, the verrucous stage, the hyperpigmentation phase, and the atrophic phase. In addition to the cutaneous manifestations, many patients have anomalies of nails, hair and teeth. Serious related abnormalities of the eyes (intraocular vasculopathy) and central nervous system (convulsions, menta

Post-resuscitation management of asphyxiated neonates.

Perinatal asphyxia is one of the common causes of neonatal mortality. Data from National Neonatal Perinatal database suggest that perinatal asphyxia contributes to almost 20% of neonatal deaths in India. Failure to initiate or sustain respiration after birth has been defined as criteria for the diagnosis of asphyxia by WHO. Perinatal asphyxia results in hypoxic injury to various organs including kidneys, lungs and liver but the most serious effects are seen on the central nervous system. Levene's classification is a useful clinical tool for grading the severity of hypoxic ischemic encephalopat
