[Effects of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Skills Training on Depression and Anxiety Disorders - A Pilot Study under Routine Care Conditions].

OBJECTIVE: Skills training as an integral part of dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) is highly effective in the treatment of borderline personality disorder. Research interest is increasingly focused on the transdiagnostic effects of the skills training on depression and anxiety disorders. The present study examined the extent to which the findings of high-quality randomized controlled studies can be transferred to everyday treatment under routine care conditions. METHODS: N=26 patients without personality disorders were treated in a day clinic over a period of eight weeks. In the control g

Improvements in Sleep Quality in Patients With Major Depressive and Generalized Anxiety Disorders Treated With Individualized, Parcel-Guided Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.

INTRODUCTION: Poor quality sleep has often been cited as a cause of lowered quality of life in patients with affective disorders such as major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). As sleep and affective disorders are affected by multi-network interactions, we hypothesize that the modulation of the central executive network (CEN), salience, and default mode networks (DMNs) through individualized repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) may improve sleep and quality of life. METHODS: A retrospective analysis from 2020 to 2023 was conducted in patients wit…

Proposing a model whereby negative valence bias increases the risk for more severe dysphoric posttraumatic stress disorder and depression symptomology.

Experiencing trauma increases risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression, and individuals who experience psychopathology after a traumatic event often experience symptoms from both disorders. Because a tendency to view events in a more negative light and a propensity toward threat appraisals are risk factors for both PTSD and depression, negative valence bias-a tendency to appraise emotional ambiguity as having a more negative (less positive) meaning-may be a transdiagnostic risk factor. In other words, we expect individuals with a negative valence bias experience greater PTS

Risk of Anxiety, Depression, and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Pediatric Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Population-Based Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is associated with depression and anxiety in adults, but data are scarce on risk of psychiatric diseases in children with IBD. We aimed to estimate the risk of anxiety, depression, or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in patients with pediatric-onset IBD. METHODS: We performed a nationwide, register-based cohort study including all patients with pediatric-onset IBD diagnosed in Denmark during 1998-2018, resulting in 3,559 patients matched 1:5 on age, sex, municipality of residence, and time period, resulting in 17,795 reference indi

Early Detection of 5 Neurodevelopmental Disorders of Children and Prevention of Postnatal Depression With a Mobile Health App: Observational Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Delay in the diagnosis of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) in toddlers and postnatal depression (PND) is a major public health issue. In both cases, early intervention is crucial but too rarely implemented in practice. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to determine if a dedicated mobile app can improve screening of 5 NDDs (autism spectrum disorder [ASD], language delay, dyspraxia, dyslexia, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder [ADHD]) and reduce PND incidence. METHODS: We performed an observational, cross-sectional, data-based study in a population of young parents in France wit

Virtual Reality Cognitive Remediation in Older Adults with Bipolar Disorder: The Effects on Cognitive Performance and Depression in a Feasibility Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Dementia, depression, and cardiovascular disease are major public health concerns for older adults, requiring early intervention. This study investigates whether a virtual reality cognitive remediation program (VR-CR) can improve cognitive function and depressive symptoms in older adults, and determines the necessary sample size for future studies. Integrated VR and CR interventions have shown promising outcomes in older adults with neurodegenerative and mental health disorders. METHODS: This secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial involves adults aged 58-75 years wi

Heart Rate Variability Measurement Can Be a Point-of-Care Sensing Tool for Screening Postpartum Depression: Differentiation from Adjustment Disorder.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a serious mental health issue among women after childbirth, and screening systems that incorporate questionnaires have been utilized to screen for PPD. These questionnaires are sensitive but less specific, and the additional use of objective measures could be helpful. The present study aimed to verify the usefulness of a measure of autonomic function, heart rate variability (HRV), which has been reported to be dysregulated in people with depression. Among 935 women who had experienced childbirth and completed the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), HRV w

Dosage effects of psychodynamic and schema therapy in people with comorbid depression and personality disorder: four-arm pragmatic randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Higher intensity of psychotherapy might improve treatment outcome in depression, especially in those with comorbid personality disorder. AIMS: To compare the effects of 25 individual sessions (weekly) of two forms of psychotherapy - short-term psychoanalytic supportive psychotherapy (SPSP) and schema therapy - with the same treatments given for 50 sessions (twice weekly) in people with depression and personality disorder. Trial registration: NTR5941. METHOD: We conducted a pragmatic, double-randomised clinical trial and, over 37 months, recruited 246 adult out-patients with comor

Contribution of post-trauma insomnia to depression and posttraumatic stress disorder in women service members: findings from the Millennium Cohort Study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: We examined whether women service members and veterans who reported recent combat and/or sexual trauma experiences had a greater risk of insomnia compared with women who did not report these recent experiences, and whether insomnia would be associated with a greater risk of mental health outcomes. METHODS: We analyzed two waves of survey data (2011-2013, Time 1 [T1] and 2014-2016, Time 2 [T2]) from 26 443 current and former women service members from the Millennium Cohort Study. We assessed recent traumas in the past 3 years, and probable insomnia at T1 and probable post-tra

Effectiveness of internet delivered cognitive behaviour therapy provided as routine care for people in the depressed phase of bipolar disorder treated with Lithium.

There is little research reporting the outcome of internet delivered cognitive behaviour therapy, (iCBT), which helps patients identify and modify unhelpful cognitions and behaviours, for the depressed phase of bipolar disorder as part of routine care. Demographic information, baseline scores and treatment outcomes were examined for patients of MindSpot Clinic, a national iCBT service who reported taking Lithium and their clinic records confirmed the diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Outcomes were completion rates, patient satisfaction and changes in measures of psychological distress, depression

Interventions Targeting Depression and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in United States Black Women Experiencing Intimate Partner Violence: A Systematic Review.

There is a dearth of evidence indicating the effectiveness of psychological interventions targeting depression and/or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for Black women in the United States (US) exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV). We searched PubMed, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, EBSCOhost, Social Sciences, Social Sciences Full Text, Social Work Abstracts, and Cochrane databases between September 2021 and October 2022, for original studies of randomized control trials (RCTs) reporting depression and/or PTSD interventions delivered to US Black women with histories of IPV. The association of anxiety disorders and depression with facial scarring: population-based, data linkage, matched cohort analysis of 358 158 patients.

BACKGROUND: Estimates suggest that 1 in 100 people in the UK live with facial scarring. Despite this incidence, psychological support is limited. AIMS: The aim of this study was to strengthen the case for improving such support by determining the incidence and risk factors for anxiety and depression disorders in patients with facial scarring. METHOD: A matched cohort study was performed. Patients were identified via secondary care data sources, using clinical codes for conditions resulting in facial scarring. A diagnosis of anxiety or depression was determined by linkage with the patient's p

Association between carpal tunnel syndrome and the five-year incidence of anxiety disorder and depression in adults followed in general practices in Germany.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the longitudinal relationship between carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and mental health. Therefore, this retrospective cohort study investigated the association between CTS and the five-year incidence of anxiety disorder and depression in adults from Germany. METHODS: Data from the Disease Analyzer database (IQVIA) were used for the present study. Patients aged ≥18 years diagnosed for the first time with CTS in one of 1284 general practices in Germany in 2005-2020 were included (index date). Individuals without CTS were matched to those with CTS using a propensit

The relationship between familial-genetic risk and pharmacological treatment in a Swedish national sample of patients with major depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.

Using Swedish registers, we examine whether the prescription of and the response to antidepressants (AD), mood stabilizers (MS), and antipsychotics (AP) in the treatment of, respectively, major depression (MD), bipolar disorder (BD), and schizophrenia (SZ), are influenced by familial-genetic risk. We examined individuals born in Sweden 1960-1995 with a first diagnosis of MD (n = 257,177), BD (n = 23,032), and SZ (n = 4248) from 2006 to 2018. Drug classes and Defined Daily Dose (DDD) were obtained from the Pharmacy register using the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical system. We utilized the Famil
