Zoonotic diseases cause repeated outbreaks in humans globally. The majority of emerging infections in humans are zoonotic. COVID-19 is an ideal example of a recently identified emerging zoonotic disease, causing a global pandemic. Anthropogenic factors such as modernisation of agriculture and livestock farming, wildlife hunting, the destruction of wild animal habitats, mixing wild and domestic animals, wildlife trading, changing food habits and urbanisation could drive the emergence of zoonotic diseases in humans. Since 2001, Bangladesh has been reporting many emerging zoonotic disease outbrea

The intensification of dog, cat and livestock vaccination campaigns significantly reduced rabies cases in humans and domestic animals in Ceará State, Brazil. However, sylvatic animals-bats (order Chiroptera), wild canids, raccoons and non-human primates- remain as reservoirs for the virus. Our hypothesis is that surveillance and monitoring of rabies virus in bats, especially passive surveillance, is of fundamental importance, besides the implementation of health education and strengthening of surveillance actions in humans exposed to aggressions. Thus, we assessed the occurrence of rabies viru

BACKGROUND: The number of migrants working in Malaysia has increased sharply since the 1970's and there is concern that infectious diseases endemic in other (e.g. neighbouring) countries may be inadvertently imported. Compulsory medical screening prior to entering the workforce does not include parasitic infections such as toxoplasmosis. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the seroprevalence of T. gondii infection among migrant workers in Peninsular Malaysia by means of serosurveys conducted on a voluntary basis among low-skilled and semi-skilled workers from five working sectors, namely,

Heroin availability and purity decreased and prices increased in Australia suddenly in early 2001. The heroin market in Australia has still not returned to the status quo ante after more than six years. Benefits of the heroin shortage, including a substantial reduction in drug overdose deaths and property crime, are generally considered to have outweighed adverse effects which included increased use of other drugs, especially stimulants, with a subsequent increase in aggression, violence and mental illness. Some commentators attributed the heroin shortage to a combination of factors, while an

The aim was to undertake a pilot study of integrated surveillance of yellow fever (YF) in Senegal, based on i) a human surveillance involving healthcare centers in the 11 administrative regions of the country ii) an entomological surveillance including domestic and sylvatic environment and iii) screening mosquitoes for YF virus using RT-PCR method. The integrated approach of human and entomological surveillance was conducted for 2 years (2003-2004). Surveillance in human population was based on screening samples of YF suspected cases (i.e. patients with acute (< or = 15 days) febrile illness w

Cajal-Retzius cells and their secreted product reelin are essential for the lamination of the cerebral cortex. In all species studied to date Cajal-Retzius cells form a transient neuronal population that almost completely disappears from the neocortex postnatally. Recently, in the hippocampal formation of adult domestic pig, we have found a large calretinin- and reelin-immunoreactive cell population that morphologically corresponded to Cajal-Retzius cells. In the present study, we examined calretinin- and reelin-immunoreactive neurons in layer I of the prefrontal, temporal, parietal and occipi

BACKGROUND: Necropsy studies in domestic cats have suggested the occurrence of a primary cardiac disease resembling hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) in humans. We used two-dimensional echocardiography to define morphological and functional features of HCM during life in 46 domestic cats evaluated in a subspecialty veterinary clinic. Cats were 8 months to 14 years old (mean, 6 years).
METHODS AND RESULTS: During the follow-up period of as long as 49 months, 18 cats died (or were euthanatized) due to congestive heart failure, peripheral embolization, or both, and 3 other cats experienced out-o

The successful management of cranial vena cava syndrome with suspected secondary chylothorax due to mediastinal cryptococcal granuloma in a 4-year-old male domestic shorthair cat is described. Treatment included long-term antifungal medication, short-term corticosteroids, intermittent thoracocentesis, rutin, octreotide, and enalapril.

Using medical literature citations, Congressional hearings, and declassified documents this paper examines the uses of pharmaceuticals in the interrogation of vulnerable populations. From the use of IV relaxants on criminal suspects during the 1920s to the Global War on Terror, the nexus of drugs, testing, and interrogations will be explored in both the domestic and international contexts.

A two-year-old, male, neutered, domestic shorthair cat was presented after suspected trauma. Diaphragmatic rupture with concomitant displacement of the right kidney into the thorax was diagnosed using ultrasound and intravenous urography. Avulsion of the renal pedicle and diaphragmatic rupture were confirmed and treated surgically with excellent outcome.

An X-trisomy has been detected in an intersexuality Spanish-bred horse by using G- and C-banding methods. The external characteristics and the behavioural and physiological irregularities of the horse are described. This is the first time that an association between an X-trisomy and a case of intersexuality has been reported in any domestic animal.

Opossums are considered resistant to rabies. Nonhematophagous bats are reservoirs of rabies in urban areas of South America. We analyzed bats and opossums tested for rabies during 2021 in a highly urbanized city in Brazil to understand spillover in an urban setting. Wildlife surveillance is necessary to prevent rabies in humans and domestic animals.

The facultative intracellular Gram-negative bacterium Brucella melitensis causes brucellosis in domestic and wild mammals, and it is a dominant pathogen responsible for human disease. This study reports the whole-genome sequencing of B. melitensis strain QY1, isolated from sheep suffering from abortion and arthritis in 2015 in Gansu, China.

In 2010, we investigated anthrax outbreak in Bhutan. A total of 43 domestic animals died, and cutaneous anthrax developed in 9 persons, and 1 died. All affected persons had contact with the carcasses of infected animals. Comprehensive preparedness and response guidelines are needed to increase public awareness of anthrax in Bhutan.

A 6-year-old, spayed female, American domestic shorthair was presented with a 10-month history of nodules on the dorsum. Diagnosis of pyogranulomatous panniculitis caused by Mycobacterium fortuitum/peregrinum group was achieved by using tissue culture, chromatography, and histopathologic examination. Pathological findings, diagnosis, and clinical management of the condition are discussed.

Partly obstructing, proliferative mucosal masses in the small intestine of two dogs were shown histologically to be hamartomatous polyps. They were characterized by an extension of smooth muscle from the muscularis mucosae into the lamina propria of the lesion. This is the first report of such lesions in domestic animals. In one of the dogs the lesion had become malignant.

From a review of the literature on this subject it emerges that around 6-7% of women are injured during the course of pregnancy. Road accidents, falls and domestic accidents are the most frequent events: it is therefore important to provide pregnant women with information to prevent such events which may endanger both maternal and fetal health.
