The PASTURE project: EU support for the improvement of knowledge about risk factors and preventive factors for atopy in Europe.

Since January 2002, the European Commission is funding a large project, 'Protection against Allergy--Study in Rural Environments' (PASTURE; contract no. QLK4-2001-00250), under the Fifth Framework Program in the field of epidemiology of allergic diseases. The aim of this paper was to describe the background and design as well as the aims of the project. Asthma and allergic disorders are a major public health problem in many Western countries. The aetiology of asthma and allergic disease remains poorly understood despite considerable research. Epidemiology has the potential to add greatly to th

Cestode infections in animals: immunological diagnosis and vaccination.

Cestode infections in animals are important because several species are zoonotic, causing cysticercosis and hydatidosis in man, and because of the economic losses incurred due to infections in livestock. Information on immunological diagnosis of and vaccination against cestode infection is restricted almost exclusively to the taeniid cestodes in which two groups of mammalian hosts are concerned: the intermediate host infected with the larval parasite and the definitive host infected with the adult tapeworm parasite. Research towards developing serological tests for the diagnosis of larval cest

Medical profile of the language-delayed child: otitis-prone versus otitis-free.

Delay in language development may be associated with an underlying anatomical, neurosensory, or psychological disorder such as: deafness, cerebral palsy, cleft palate, autism, or mental retardation. A condition called specific developmental language delay may occur in children devoid of any other identifiable disorder or developmental delay. Language delay associated with early onset, severe-to-profound hearing impairment has been well documented. Controversial studies have also appeared in the communicative disorders' literature suggesting that fluctuating conductive hearing loss in early chi

Vaccine value profile for leishmaniasis.

Leishmania infections are global, occurring in 98 countries and all World Health Organization (WHO) regions with 600 million to 1 billion people at risk of infection. Visceral leishmaniasis is associated with almost 20,000 reported deaths annually, with children under 5 years of age being at the greatest risk of mortality. Amongst WHO-recognised Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), leishmaniasis is one of the most important in terms of mortality and morbidity. With an increasing global burden of disease and a growing threat from climate change, urbanisation and drug resistance, there remains an

How do equity markets react to COVID-19? Evidence from emerging and developed countries.

Based on the supply of stock market returns hypothesis, we argue that the unprecedented adverse shock of COVID-19 on the countries' economic growth translates into a negative shock to the stock markets. According to the institutional theory, we also argue that the impact of COVID-19 in emerging countries is different from developed countries. Based on the overreaction hypothesis, we expect that the market reaction during the stabilizing period of COVID-19 spread is different from the market reaction during the infection period. Using high-frequency daily data across 53 emerging and 23 develope

Oral inoculation of young dairy calves with Mycoplasma bovis results in colonization of tonsils, development of otitis media and local immunity.

Because M. bovis otitis media is an economically important problem, there is a need to understand the pathogenesis of disease, not only to improve our understanding of the factors contributing to the development of this disease but also to inform the development of improved diagnostic tests and therapy. Oral ingestion of M. bovis-contaminated milk is linked, but not definitively proven, to development of otitis media. In the current study, we demonstrate that oral ingestion of M. bovis infected colostrum can result in an ascending infection and development of otitis media. Importantly, M. bovi

Development of a Mycobacterium bovis intranasal challenge model in mice.

Tuberculosis caused by infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium bovis remains one of the most important infectious diseases of man and animals. The current vaccine, M. bovis bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) demonstrates variable efficacy in humans and cattle, and so an urgent need exists for a new vaccine to replace or supplement BCG. Novel vaccine development requires the availability of a suitable animal model in which to test potential vaccine candidates. Models for tuberculosis vaccine development include mice, guinea pigs, cattle and non-human primates. Murine models provid

The Influence of Facial Injury during the First World War on the Development of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Britain and Germany.

In the First World War (WW1), different types of injuries became both political and economic factors for the main belligerent countries. This work illustrates the special role facial injuries played during and after the war and the profound impact they had on the field of Plastic Surgery in Britain and Germany. This is a historical work based on primary and secondary sources. English and German material was used to compile an overview of the development of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery as a specialty during WW1 and up to the Second World War (WW2).Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery had the

Protein malnutrition in BALB/C mice: A model mimicking clinical scenario of marasmic-kwashiorkor malnutrition.

Protein malnutrition continues to be a major global issue. A stable animal model to address protein malnutrition and its effect on various disease conditions is necessary. In the present study, we have formulated and standardized a low protein diet (LPD) to develop a protein malnutrition model using Balb/C mice. Healthy male Balb/C mice were weaned and exposed to LPD combinations while another group exposed to normal diet (18% protein). Animal survival, change in body weight, body mass index (BMI), biochemical parameters, antioxidant status, and liver histopathology were used to confirm the de

HIV and the heart: the impact of antiretroviral therapy: a global perspective.

From a global perspective, cardiovascular disease (CVD) in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may result from cardiac involvement upon presentation of opportunistic infections in the presence of advanced immunosuppression, be a consequence of HIV-induced immune activation or derive from antiretroviral therapy-associated dyslipidaemia and insulin resistance. Indeed, in developed countries with unlimited access to antiretroviral therapy CVD has become one of the major causes of death in HIV. Therefore, cardiovascular risk reduction and lifestyle modifications are essential and careful selection

Development of emission factors and emission inventories for motorcycles and light duty vehicles in the urban region in Vietnam.

This paper reports on a 2-year emissions monitoring program launched by the Centre for Environmental Monitoring of the Vietnam Environment Administration which aimed at determining emission factors and emission inventories for two typical types of vehicle in Hanoi, Vietnam. The program involves four major activities. A database for motorcycles and light duty vehicles (LDV) in Hanoi was first compiled through a questionnaire survey. Then, two typical driving cycles were developed for the first time for motorcycles and LDVs in Hanoi. Based on this database and the developed driving cycles for Ha

Relative lack of clinical disease among household contacts of tuberculosis patients compared to leprosy households.

The incidence of clinical tuberculosis and clinical leprosy among household members of tuberculosis and leprosy patients in Sri Lanka was studied. The study period was approximately 20 years (January 1981 to December 2001) and the total number of patients and contacts were 325 and 968 for tuberculosis and 726 and 3066 for leprosy, respectively. While none of the tuberculosis patient households had more than 1 patient nor any contacts who developed clinical disease during the observation period, 20% (148/726) of the leprosy patients had more than 1 patient in the family and 0.9% (13/1403) of th

Some notes on the history of rheumatic carditis.

The history of rheumatic heart disease is briefly surveyed. Mitral regurgitation was recognized as the dominant lesion in acute carditis in the 1830s. This diagnosis fell out of favour in the early twentieth century. Also valvular lesions were then considered to be less important than myocardial disease as a cause of symptoms in chronic rheumatic heart disease. Successful mitral valvotomies in 1948 corrected this view. Mitral stenosis takes years to develop after acute valvulitis. Studies from the rheumatic fever research unit at Taplow showed absence of cardiac dilatation in first attacks of

Distributed decision support using a web-based interface: prevention of sudden cardiac death.

Although decision models can provide a formal foundation for guideline development and clinical decision support, their widespread use is often limited by the lack of platform-independent software that geographically dispersed users can access and use easily without extensive training. To address these limitations the authors developed a World Wide Web-based interface for previously developed decision models. They describe the use and functionality of the interface using a decision model that evaluates the cost-effectiveness of strategies for preventing sudden cardiac death. The system allows

The impact of HIV infection on skeletal maturity in peripubertal children in Zimbabwe: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: HIV infection and its treatment compromises skeletal development (growth and maturation). Skeletal maturity is assessed as bone age (BA) on hand and wrist radiographs. BA younger than chronological age (CA) indicates delayed development. We conducted a cross-sectional study to determine differences between BA and CA (i.e., skeletal maturity deviation [SMD]), and risk factors associated with SMD in peripubertal children with and without HIV established on antiretroviral therapy (ART) including use of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF). METHODS: Children with HIV taking ART for a

How can epidemiology assist in guiding interventions for the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome/human immunodeficiency virus?

In a single decade, the pandemic of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has become an international health, social, and economic emergency. Early and effective intervention is urgently needed for both prevention of HIV infection and for the amelioration of clinical disease. Results of therapeutic trials have suggested expanding the population for which chemotherapy is indicated. In this paper, we first review the findings from selected recent drug trials, using zidovudine and pentamidine as examples. We then discuss six issues that we believe to be crucial for future epidemiologic res

Impact of COVID-19 on the neglected tropical diseases: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the prevalence, management, and control of the neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) highlighting the current or prospective impact of COVID-19 on research and development funding for, and execution of, NTD programmes. This review was conducted to determine if, and how, NTDs were affected by COVID-19, and whether those effects will delay the elimination goals of the Sustainable Development goals. METHODS: Using open-source available data from policy and documentation from official websites of the relevant stakeholders inc

Does protectionism improve environment of developing countries? A perspective of environmental efficiency assessment.

Past studies related to embodied pollutant accounting reported that free trade has increased the environmental pollution of developing economies, because the developed countries "outsource" their pollutants to developing nations. The COVID-19 pandemic has stimulated the rise of the most serious protectionism after World War II. This study is aimed to discuss whether protectionism improve the environment in developing countries by developing a comprehensive evaluation model, which integrates multi-regional input-output (MRIO), data envelopment analysis (DEA), and scenario analysis. We revealed

Association of armed conflict and global measles cases: A structural equation modeling analysis of 193 countries from 2000 to 2023.

BACKGROUND: Global armed conflict and population displacement are increasing, yet their association with population health remains poorly understood. We developed and tested four theoretical models linking armed conflict, population displacement, and socioeconomic development to measles burden across 193 countries from 2000 to 2023. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We analyzed longitudinal country-level data comprising 4,632 country-year observations, combining fixed-effects panel regression and structural equation modeling (SEM). Observed variables included battle-related deaths (BRDs) and forcibly dis…
