OBJECTIVE: Cochlear implantation is a common treatment approach for children with auditory neuropathy/dyssynchrony (AN/AD) who do not benefit from hearing aids. The auditory brainstem response (ABR) is a measure of neural synchrony along the auditory pathway up through the brainstem. By definition, acoustically evoked ABR is absent in AN/AD, however, ABR can be elicited by electrical stimulation through the cochlear implant (electrically evoked ABR [EABR]). Reports of EABR with AN/AD to date have been primarily descriptive in nature. The objective of this study was to quantify EABR wave V meas

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of a purified scorpion toxin (Ts3) on human corpus cavernosum (HCC) in vitro. Scorpion venoms cause a massive release of neurotransmitters that contribute to the clinical symptoms resulting from envenomation.
METHODS: HCC strips were mounted in organ baths containing Krebs solution. After equilibration, the tissues were precontracted with phenylephrine (10 micromol/L). The relaxations caused by Ts3 (30 nmol/L) were compared with those induced by electrical field stimulation (1 to 20 Hz) and nitric oxide (NO, 1 to 100 micromol/L).
RESULTS: The addition o

The response properties of incisor- and molar-sensitive periodontal mechanosensitive (PM) neurones in the primary somatosensory (SI) cortex of rabbits were examined and rhythmical jaw movements induced by repetitive electrical stimulation of the recording sites of cortical PM neurones were observed. PM units were recorded from the rostromedial (RM) and rostrolateral (RL) areas of the SI cortex. In the RM area, most PMs (85%) were lower incisor-sensitive. Electrical stimulation of the RM area produced chopping-type rhythmical jaw movements. In the RL area, both incisor- and molar-sensitive PM u

We tested the idea that migraine triggers cause cortical activation, which disinhibits craniovascular sensation through the nucleus raphe magnus (NRM) and thus produces the headache of migraine. Stimulation of the dura mater and facial skin activated neurons in the NRM and the trigeminal nucleus. Stimulation of the NRM caused suppression of responses of trigeminal neurons to electrical and mechanical stimulation of the dura mater, but not of the skin. This suppression was antagonized by the iontophoretic application of the 5-HT(1B/1D) receptor antagonist GR127935 to trigeminal neurons. Migrain

The influence of increasing electrodermal stimulation (EDS) on the dynamics of the somatovegetative reactions evoked by electrical stimulation of negative emotiogenic regions of the hypothalamus was studied. EDS produced a blocking effect on the somatovegetative reactions evoked by stimulation of the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH). Pretreatment with naloxone prevented the effects of EDS. Injection of beta-endorphine in a dose of 10 micrograms to the lateral ventricules of the animal brain also blocked the somatovegetative reactions during VMH stimulation. Injection of beta-endorphine in doses

Although intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) has emerged as a promising time-efficient and non-invasive neuromodulatory strategy in post-stroke motor rehabilitation, its clinical efficacy remains variable across patients and studies. In this review, we propose a multiscale framework for understanding how iTBS may support post-stroke motor recovery while emphasizing the current limits of translational evidence. At the microscopic and mesoscopic levels, preclinical studies suggest that iTBS contributes to early post-stroke repair by modulating ferroptosis, endoplasmic reticulum stress-re

Background: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) produces heterogeneous outcomes across cognitive, behavioural, and clinical studies. Sex-related differences may contribute to this variability. Objective: This narrative review examined whether and how sex moderates tDCS outcomes across behavioural, physiological, clinical, and modelling studies and considered potential underlying mechanisms. Materials and Methods: A structured literature search identified studies examining sex, or variables reported by the original authors as gender but operationalised through female-male group compa

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of vision loss in working-age individuals globally, and the associated complication of diabetic macular edema (DME) is the most frequent cause of vision loss in these patients. The retinal swelling characteristic of DME can be attributed to fluid leakage due to damage to the two blood-retina barriers-the inner barrier composed primarily of retinal microvascular endothelial cells and the outer barrier composed of retinal pigment epithelial cells (RPE).
METHODS: Based on the previously characterized proinflammatory roles of prostanoid

Clinical trials have demonstrated that kilohertz-frequency transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (TSCS) can be used to facilitate the recovery of sensory-motor function for patients with spinal cord injury, whereas the neural mechanism of TSCS is still undetermined so that the choice of stimulation parameters is largely dependent on the clinical experience. In this paper, a finite element model of transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation was used to calculate the electric field distribution of human spinal cord segments T 12 to L 2, whereas the activation thresholds of spinal fibers were determ

BACKGROUND: The effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) are generally thought to result from the polarization of cortical neurons by the weak electric fields it creates. However, recent evidence suggests that some tDCS effects may be mediated through co-stimulation of peripheral or cranial nerves, particularly the trigeminal nerve (TN). The TN projects to key brainstem nuclei that regulate neurotransmitter release throughout the central nervous system, but the specific pathways involved are not yet well understood.
METHODS: In this study, we examined the effects of acute tra

The efficacy of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for depression may depend on targeting specific brain circuits. However, this has not been tested for TMS with the H1 coil, a widely used device believed to target more broadly and deeply than TMS with figure-of-8 coils. This study examined whether targeting a specific brain circuit with H1 coil TMS treatment may impact depressive symptom improvement. We retrospectively analyzed data from 97 patients at McLean Hospital, who received at least 19 TMS sessions and had incidentally completed an anatomical brain MRI. We modeled each patient's

Well-established in the field of bioelectronic medicine, Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) offers an implantable, non-pharmacologic treatment for patients with intractable chronic pain conditions. Chronic pain is a widely heterogenous syndrome with regard to both pathophysiology and the resultant phenotype. Despite advances in our understanding of SCS-mediated antinociception, there still exists limited evidence clarifying the pathways recruited when patterned electric pulses are applied to the epidural space. The rapid clinical implementation of novel SCS methods including burst, high frequency a

PURPOSE: To evaluate the insertion results and hearing preservation of a novel slim modiolar electrode (SME) in patients with residual hearing.
METHODS: We retrospectively collected the data from the medical files of 17 patients (18 ears) implanted with a SME. All patients had functional low frequency hearing (PTA (0.125-0.5 kHz) ≤ 80 dB HL). The insertion results were re-examined from the postoperative cone-beam computed tomography scans. Postoperative thresholds were obtained at the time of switch-on of the sound processors (mean 43 days) and at latest follow-up (mean 582 days). The speech

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: The ventral intermediate nucleus of the thalamus is a primary target of deep brain stimulation (DBS) in patients … case of cerebral injury after DBS revision and offers insights into the mechanism of high-frequency electric stimulation compared with lesions. That is, although high-frequency stimulation failed to control this patient's tremor, thalamotomy-like injury was completely effective.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a selective, painless, brain stimulation technique that allows the electric stimulation of specific cortical regions. TDCS has been recently used as investigational intervention for major depression and treatment resistant depression (TRD) with encouraging results. The present study was aimed to investigate the efficacy and tolerability of tDCS in major depressives with poor response to pharmacological treatment. Twenty-three depressed patients, with a diagnosis of major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder, were treated with augmentative tD…

UNLABELLED: Delivering therapeutics to the brain remains one of the most persistent challenges in medicine, because the blood-brain barrier (BBB) excludes over 98% of small-molecule drugs and virtually all biologics from the central nervous system (CNS). We developed electrical BBB modulation (eBBB), an on-demand platform combining vascular-targeting poly-L-lactic acid nanoparticles with high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation to achieve spatially and temporally controlled BBB opening. eBBB produced localized, reversible increases in BBB permeability confined to the stimulated

Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) poses significant challenges due to the complex structure and regenerative microenvironment of peripheral nerves, which limit self-repair capabilities. Artificial nerve conduits have been widely used for nerve repair. Here, a conductive-piezoelectric integrated microstructured conduit is designed, using poly(lactic glycolic acid) (PLGA) and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) via electrostatic spinning to obtain an implantable, biodegradable piezoelectric nanofibrous membrane. This membrane is further enhanced with a reduced graphene oxide/methacrylated gelatin (rGO/
