A Nutrient-Dense Diet with Optimal Protein Level Restores Goblet Cells and Alleviates Microbial Dysbiosis in a Mouse Model of Colitis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic intestinal inflammation is a key driver of colitis-associated colorectal cancer. A mouse model with intestinal epithelial cell-specific knockout (KO) of heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein I (hnRNPI KO) spontaneously develops colitis and reduces goblet cell numbers, mimicking the pathological symptoms observed in humans with chronic intestinal inflammation, making the hnRNPI KO mouse an invaluable model of gut inflammation. Although higher dietary protein has been associated with lower inflammation and restoration of immune adaptation, the mechanisms remain unclear. OB

Electroacupuncture for the prevention of acute gastrointestinal injury in patients with sepsis undergoing mechanical ventilation (EAGISM): a protocol for an open-label randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Septic acute gastrointestinal injury (S-AGI) plays a vital role in the initiation and progression of sepsis. Electroacupuncture (EA) is utilized for the treatment and prevention of S-AGI due to its positive impact on gastrointestinal function. However, there is a lack of rigorous trials examining the effectiveness and safety of EA in this context. Thus, a randomized controlled trial (RCT) at a single center has been designed to thoroughly assess the efficacy and safety of EA as an adjunctive therapy for preventing the incidence of S-AGI in patients with sepsis. METHODS: A total of

Reassessing the timing of percutaneous gastrostomy tube placement: Too many too soon.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tubes are used for patients requiring long-term feeding access but are often placed to facilitate hospital disposition. Given the associated procedural risks and potential for patient recovery, we aimed to investigate the rate of return to oral intake after PEG placement, procedural indications, and complications to better elucidate the risk-benefit balance of PEG placement. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of all patients who underwent nonelective PEG tube placement at our Level 1 trauma center from January 1, 2023, to March 1

Contrasting egg-laying, adult abundance and genetics of the dengue vector Aedes aegypti in two ecologically distinct regions in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti is widely distributed in the tropics and sub-tropics and is a major vector of several arboviruses, such as dengue and chikungunya viruses. Mapping the behavioral and genetic divergence among the mosquito populations can enhance our understanding of spatiotemporal variation in disease transmission. METHODS: Cross-sectional surveys were carried out between 2022 and 2023 to investigate egg-laying abundance in ovitraps as well as adult abundance in BG Sentinel traps baited with carbon dioxide. Both trap types were deployed in outdoor environments in two peri-urban areas

Choline and betaine concentrations in plasma discriminate levels of dietary choline intake in healthy adults: analysis of a double-blind randomized crossover controlled feeding study.

BACKGROUND: Choline is an essential nutrient, and insufficient intake negatively affects the liver, brain, and muscles. In the United States, habitual choline intake remains below the adequate intake (AI). To date, no circulating metabolites have been validated to distinguish between low and adequate choline intake. OBJECTIVES: We tested whether plasma concentrations of choline and its metabolites could discriminate adequate compared with low dietary choline intake and whether liver elastography (FibroScan) could detect diet-induced changes in liver fat. METHODS: In a double-blind, randomize

Exploring L-tyrosine and L-DOPA biosynthesis in faba bean (Vicia faba L.).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: L-DOPA is an important pharmaceutical that accumulates to high levels in the legume faba bean (Vicia faba). L-DOPA is likely derived from L-tyrosine but the responsible enzyme (L-tyrosine oxidase) remains unknown. Availability of L-tyrosine may be a key factor controlling L-DOPA accumulation. In legumes, L-tyrosine is supplied via either a plastidial TyrA enzyme (ADH) or a deregulated cytosolic homolog (PDH). This study aimed at identifying L-tyrosine oxidase and TyrA genes from faba bean. METHODS: We used gene-to-metabolite correlations and homology-based searches to sel

Swallowing Rehabilitation with Motor Imagery in Patients Undergoing Radiation for Head & Neck Cancer: A Prospective Study.

OBJECTIVES: Radiation therapy (RT) for head and neck cancer (HNC) commonly causes dysphagia. Swallowing rehabilitation programs (SRPs) during RT improve functional outcomes, but adherence remains low due to RT-related pain. Motor imagery (MI) incorporated into SRPs may provide a low-burden adjunct to improve participation and outcomes. The purpose of this prospective pilot study is to evaluate adherence and clinical outcomes of an MI-based SRP for HNC patients undergoing RT. METHODS: Between April 2021 and November 2023, 20 HNC patients receiving RT enrolled in an MI-incorporated SRP at a ter

Diurnal rhythms in melatonin and cortisol in very preterm human milk.

INTRODUCTION: Human milk (HM) contains bioactive compounds and hormones vital for infant neuro- and circadian-development. While healthy term-born infants receive time-of-day cues naturally through breastfeeding, preterm infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) are typically fed with pooled expressed milk via tube feeding, which lacks time-of-day specificity. Despite growing interest in chrononutrition and circadian entrainment in the NICU, little is known about diurnal hormonal rhythms in preterm HM and their potential role in circadian development. METHODS: We investigated diurnal

Intermittent fasting inhibits ferroptosis by modulating CD36 and its palmitoylation to alleviate diabetic dry eye.

BACKGROUND: Excessive lipid accumulation in the lacrimal glands under diabetic conditions can lead to lacrimal gland dysfunction and reduced tear secretion, subsequently resulting in ocular surface inflammation, dry eye syndrome, and corneal vulnerability, ultimately compromising the patient’s quality of life. There are limited and easily implemented intervention strategies to reduce excessive lipid accumulation. While intermittent fasting (IF) has emerged as a promising metabolic intervention, its mechanistic underpinnings and therapeutic potential in diabetes-associated lacrimal gland disord

Choline and betaine concentrations in plasma predict dietary choline intake in healthy humans: a double-blind randomized control feeding study.

BACKGROUND: Choline is an essential nutrient, and insufficient intake negatively affects organs such as the liver, brain, and muscles. In the United States, average choline intake remains below the Adequate Intake (AI) (550 mg/day men, 425 mg/day women). Although conventional dietary assessment tools can identify people who are eating diets low in choline, no metabolite biomarkers have been proven to reliably assess choline intake. OBJECTIVE: We tested whether plasma concentrations of choline and its metabolites could determine dietary choline intake. We also assessed whether liver elastograp

Influence of mould growth and outdoor exposure on the efficacy of attractive targeted sugar baits against Anopheles arabiensis in western Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: Attractive Targeted Sugar Baits (ATSBs) effectively target Anopheles mosquitoes in semi-arid, low-humidity climates. However, high humidity encourages mould growth on ATSB surfaces, and its effect on the efficacy of ATSBs against malaria vectors is yet to be determined. This study explored how mould growth affects the performance of ATSB version 1.2 by comparing mouldy stations from exposed environments to non-mouldy stations from protected settings through laboratory bioassays on the local malaria vector, Anopheles arabiensis. METHODS: One hundred ATSB stations were deployed in
