The distribution and prevalence of spotted fever group rickettsial infection in the ixodid dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus were found to occur at a rate of 19.7% with variation related to geographic and sociooccupational factors. A higher rate of infection was demonstrated in ticks removed from dogs associated with documented cases of boutonneuse fever. The results fit into available clinical and seroepidemiologic data on Rickettsia conorii infection in western Sicily.

Immature and adult ixodid ticks were collected during 1983 and 1984 in Newtown, Connecticut, an area endemic for Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), to determine prevalence of infection by spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae. Direct fluorescent-antibody (FA) staining revealed SFG organisms in 6 (1.8%) of 332 Dermacentor variabilis larvae, 5 (7.8%) of 64 D. variabilis nymphs, and in 2 (40%) of 5 Ixodes cookei nymphs removed from small- and medium-sized mammals. Hemolymph tests detected rickettsia-like organisms in 15 (8.8%) of 170 D. variabilis adults; 8 specimens retested by direct FA were …

Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Modeling dengue transmission is crucial for control, given its risk to half the world's population. This paper develops a host-to-host transmission model within hypergraphs constructed from simplicial complexes. Necessary conditions for the emergence of Turing instability in dengue dynamical systems naturally coupled on hypergraphs are derived. Furthermore, a multiplex network framework is constructed on hypergraphs by incorporating the influence of information on dengue transmission, and expressi…

Fever is a common adverse reaction to vaccination, contributing to vaccine hesitancy and reduced uptake. To understand variation in fever risk, we longitudinally profiled fecal microbiota, oral temperature, and serological markers in 171 healthy adults receiving Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 mRNA vaccines. Fever risk correlated with low-grade intestinal inflammation, increased abundance of flagellated Lachnospiraceae bacteria, and increased flagellin expression prevaccine. Microbiomes from fever-high donors triggered stronger inflammation in human intestinal organoids and dro…

BACKGROUND: Acute rheumatic fever (ARF) is an immune-mediated sequela of group A streptococcal infection that can progress to rheumatic heart disease (RHD), defined by permanent rheumatic valvular damage. Although uncommon in the United States, delayed recognition may lead to advanced valve disease and arrhythmias.
CASE SUMMARY: A 10-year-old African-American male presented after syncope following 4 months of unexplained bilateral ankle arthritis. He was found to be in atrial flutter. Echocardiography showed a flail mitral valve with severe regurgitation, moderate tricuspid regurgitation, and…

BACKGROUND: African swine fever (ASF) is a highly fatal swine disease caused by the ASF virus (ASFV), resulting in substantial socio-economic impacts in affected regions worldwide. The remarkable environmental stability and tenacity of ASFV play a critical role in indirect transmission through contaminated carcasses and fomites. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the survival of ASFV in multiple sample types relevant to potential indirect transmission routes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The stability and tenacity of ASFV in whole blood, oral and rectal swabs, and tissues, including the spleen, …

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tick-bome viral infection with a wide geographic distribution globally. The clinical severity of CCHF varies, with reported mortality rates reaching up to 60%. Despite its spread to new geographic areas and its potential to cause severe and fatal disease, no approved vaccine or antiviral treatment is currently available. Studies on the use of ribavirin for CCHF have yielded conflicting results. Consequently, many physicians manage CCHF patients with supportive care. In this study, we share the positive outcomes observed in CCHF…

Yellow fever (YF) vaccination is generally contraindicated in individuals with thymic disorders because of the risk of YF vaccine-associated viscerotropic disease (YEL‑AVD). As YF transmission expands and global travel increases, protection may still be indicated for selected patients with prior thymectomy. We report a 25‑year‑old woman with childhood thymectomy for acetylcholine receptor antibody-positive generalized myasthenia gravis, now in long‑term remission without immunosuppression, who required YF prevention. Immune competence was evaluated using monitored orthoflaviviral proxy immuniz…

Arboviral infections represent a growing challenge for global public health due to vector expansion, globalization, and climate change. Dengue (DENV), Zika (ZIKV), Chikungunya (CHIKV), and West Nile virus (WNV) often co-circulate and present overlapping clinical manifestations, making rapid and accurate etiological diagnosis difficult. In this context, multiplex real-time RT-PCR assays can support clinical management and epidemiological surveillance. In this study, analytical and preliminary retrospective comparisons of the NovaplexTM Tropical Fever Virus Assay, a multiplex RT-PCR system desig…

This article reports the case of a 58-year-old male patient who presented with a generalized rash, intermittent fever, and a concomitant perianal abscess, as well as mycoplasma pneumoniae psittacosis. The initial symptom was episodic slurred speech, which progressively developed into symptoms such as delayed responses and left-sided limb weakness. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging revealed gradually progressive intracranial lesions characterized primarily by asymmetric white matter damage, with no enhancement upon contrast administration. Serum HIV antibody testing was positive. Next-generati…

Rat bite fever, caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis and Spirillum minus, is a zoonotic infection with increasing prevalence as more people keep rats as pets. It is a challenging diagnosis due to a broad range of symptomatology, and its causative organisms are difficult to culture. As such, it may be necessary to be diagnosed presumptively in the appropriate clinical context. This report details a case where diagnosis was presumptively made on a second emergency department presentation after no diagnosis was made on the first presentation. The patient in this case presented with fever, rash,…

Staphylococcus saccharolyticus is a slow-growing anaerobic coagulase-negative staphylococcus and a rare cause of bloodstream infections. We report the case of a previously healthy 35-year-old woman who presented with fever and headache. One anaerobic bottle from each of two separately collected blood culture sets became positive after 53 h, and S. saccharolyticus was identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry; both aerobic bottles remained negative. No focus of infection was detected. Repeat cultures drawn on day 3, before vancomycin treatment…

This paper introduced the diagnosis and treatment of a case of severe Dabie bandavirus infection. The disease is called severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS). The disease is an acute natural epidemic disease. The disease is usually endemic in mountainous and hilly areas, in summer and autumn. Most often associated with tick bites. The main clinical manifestations of SFTS are fever, leukopenia and/or thrombocytopenia, lymphadenopathy, fatigue and gastrointestinal symptoms. The most of the prognosis is good. Aged, with underlying diseases or delay seeking medical attention, the dise…

This study presents a rare case of rhabdomyolysis caused by Orthobunyavirus oropoucheense in a 21-year-old male patient in the Amazon region. The diagnosis was confirmed by the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction test. Neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, and hepatitis were also identified by laboratory tests, demonstrating the clinical relevance as they are alterations with potential severity. The patient's good recovery is noteworthy, with only simple analgesia and intravenous hydration. The case highlights the need for better clarification regarding the pathophysiology of this distinc

The mRNA vaccine platform should help research on East Coast fever subunit vaccines, but it remains unexplored. A theoretical strength of this platform, namely its capacity to prime cytotoxic T lymphocyte responses, is appealing as these, rather than antibodies, are the major mediators of immunity induced by a live parasite-based vaccine. Here, I highlight knowledge on functionally relevant bovine adaptive cellular and antibody immune responses to Theileria parva and antigens targeted by them that could help to assess this vaccine platform, and in the design of a broad-spectrum subunit vaccine…

These guidelines provide updated recommendations on ambulatory care for low-risk neutropenic fever in adult and paediatric patients. National and international data support the clinical, economic and psychosocial benefits of risk stratification, and home-based or reduced intensity treatment of neutropenic fever. Benefits include shortened in-hospital length of stay, reduced healthcare costs, early intravenous to oral switch and improved patient and caregiver quality of life. Since publication of the 2011 Australian consensus guidelines, additional adult and paediatric neutropenic fever clinica…

African swine fever (ASF), caused by the highly contagious African swine fever virus (ASFV), poses a significant threat to domestic and wild pigs worldwide. Despite its limited host range and lack of zoonotic potential, ASF has severe socio-economic and environmental consequences. Current control strategies primarily rely on early detection and culling of infected animals, but these measures are insufficient given the rapid spread of the disease. Developing effective therapeutics against ASFV is crucial to prevent further spread and mitigate economic losses. Although vaccination remains critic…
