Assessing health status in informal schizophrenia caregivers compared with health status in non-caregivers and caregivers of other conditions.

BACKGROUND: Research indicates schizophrenia is a cause of burden for patients and caregivers. This study examined health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and comorbidities experienced by informal schizophrenia caregivers compared with non-caregivers and caregivers of adults with other conditions (e.g., Alzheimer's disease, cancer, and stroke). METHODS: Data were obtained from the 5EU (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK) National Health and Wellness Survey, an online questionnaire that is representative of the total 5EU adult (18+ years) population. Respondents provided information on HRQoL (SF

'All those things together made me retire': qualitative study on early retirement among Dutch employees.

BACKGROUND: Due to the aging of the population and subsequent higher pressure on public finances, there is a need for employees in many European countries to extend their working lives. One way in which this can be achieved is by employees refraining from retiring early. Factors predicting early retirement have been identified in quantitative research, but little is known on why and how these factors influence early retirement. The present qualitative study investigated which non-health related factors influence early retirement, and why and how these factors influence early retirement. METHO

Screening for cancer with PET and PET/CT: potential and limitations.

Screening for cancer remains a very emotional and hotly debated issue in contemporary medical practice. An analysis of published data reveals a multitude of opinions based on a limited amount of reliable data. Even for breast cancer screening, which is now widely practiced in the United States and many European countries, there is continuing controversy regarding the appropriate age limits for screening mammography and, in fact, concerning the value of mammography itself. Similarly, there is no agreement as to whether screening for lung or prostate cancer is meaningful as currently practiced.

Estimating the public economic gains in Taiwan from in vitro fertilization (IVF) subsidy changes implemented in 2021.

STUDY QUESTION: What is the governmental fiscal impact of a new assisted reproduction subsidy scheme based on projected lifetime net taxes attributed to resulting live births in Taiwan? SUMMARY ANSWER: We estimate that the new fertility reimbursement scheme has generated favorable lifetime fiscal gains for the Taiwanese government, resulting in a return on investment (ROI) of NT$5.6 for every NT$1.0 spent based on those families receiving public subsidies for fertility care under the new scheme. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Globally, there is variation in the amount of public reimbursement for ass

Ethical and policy issues in rehabilitation medicine.

The field of medical rehabilitation is relatively new.... Until recently, the ethical problems of this new field were neglected. There seemed to be more pressing concerns as rehabilitation medicine struggled to establish itself, sometimes in the face of considerable skepticism or hostility. There also seemed no pressing moral questions of the kind and intensity to be encountered, say, in high-technology acute care medicine or genetic engineering.... Those in biomedical ethics could and did easily overlook the quiet, less obtrusive issues of rehabilitation.... The Hastings Center set out in 198

From hope to hesitation: why couples fail to return for infertility treatment after the first consultation.

STUDY QUESTION: What are the key factors that influence couples' decision not to return for fertility treatment after their first consultation? SUMMARY ANSWER: Advanced maternal age, lower ovarian reserve, and eligibility for heterologous fertilization are primary determinants of non-return among couples. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Previous research highlights the psychological, financial, and demographic reasons behind high dropout rates in IVF, yet a comprehensive understanding of the factors driving non-return, particularly at the first consultation, is still lacking and warrants further stud

Hybrid Hospital-at-Home Program in Singapore: Ethnographic Study.

BACKGROUND: Hospital-at-Home (HaH) programs deliver hospital-level care in the home setting, traditionally emphasizing high-touch, in-person clinical visits. In recent years, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, HaH models have rapidly evolved to incorporate digital technologies, enabling remote consultations and monitoring as part of care delivery. While both in-person and remote HaH modalities have individually shown positive outcomes with patient experience and clinical safety, less is known about how hybrid models, combining both modalities, are experienced by patients and caregivers.

Evaluation of health impacts of a disability-inclusive graduation programme among ultra-poor people with disabilities in Uganda: secondary analysis of a cluster randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: People with disabilities experience significant health inequalities and barriers to healthcare access globally. While poverty alleviation interventions show promise for improving health outcomes, evidence specifically for people with disabilities remains limited. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a disability-inclusive graduation (DIG) programme on health outcomes among ultra-poor people with disabilities in Uganda. METHODS: We conducted a two-arm, parallel cluster-randomized controlled trial in four districts of Northern Uganda. Clusters were randomly assigned to either t
