The relationship between common foot problems with falls and quality of life in older people.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the relationship between a number of prevalent foot problems in older people and their history of falls and quality of life. To examine the relationship between timed up and go (TUG) test time and ankle muscles' strength. METHOD: In this cross-sectional observational study on a convenient sample of 350 people 65 years and older, direct logistic and hierarchical regressions were used to assess the relation of self-reported falls and quality of life with hallux valgus, oedema, sensory loss and callus. The correlation coefficients were calculated to measure the relationsh…

Validation of Pretreatment Methods for the In-Process Quantification of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Vaccine Antigens.

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), caused by the FMD virus (FMDV), is controlled by vaccine policy in many countries. For vaccine potency, the content of intact virus particles (146S antigens) is critical, and the sucrose density gradient (SDG) fractionation is the gold standard for the quantification of 146S antigens. However, this method has several drawbacks. Although size-exclusion high-performance liquid chromatography (SE-HPLC) was introduced to replace the classic method, its application is generally confined to purified samples owing to the interfering signals. Therefore, we aimed to develo…

A Review: Matrix Metallopeptidase-9 Nanoparticles Targeted for the Treatment of Diabetic Foot Ulcers.

Diabetes foot ulcers are a leading cause of death in diabetic individuals. There are very few medicines and treatments that have received regulatory clearance for this indication, and numerous compounds from various pharmacological classes are now in various stages of clinical studies for diabetic foot ulcers treatment. Multiple risk factors contribute to diabetic foot ulcers, including neuropathy, peripheral artery disease, infection, gender, cigarette smoking, and age. The present difficulties in diabetic foot ulcers treatment are related to bacterial resistance to currently utilized antibio…

A new methodology to estimate flat foot in skeletal remains - the example of Mediterranean collections.

Flat feet (pes planus) are considered a postural defect caused by the collapse of the longitudinal arch, producing complete or near-complete contact of the sole of the foot with the ground. Pes planus has been well-studied in clinical literature and paleoanthropology but has not been approached extensively in bioarchaeology. The main difficulty is related to the diagnosis of this pathology based exclusively on bone remains. In this work, we propose a metric and morphological method to discriminate flat foot in dry bones. Thus, we studied 390 pairs of adult feet in a fair state of preservation …

Intra- and Interobserver Reliability of the New Classification System of Progressive Collapsing Foot Deformity.

BACKGROUND: Historical concept of flatfoot as posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD) has been questioned. Recently, the consensus group published a new classification system and recommended renaming PTTD to Progressive Collapsing Foot Deformity (PCFD). The new PCFD classification could be effective in providing comprehensive information on the deformity. To date, there has been no study reporting intra- and interobserver reliability and the frequency of each class in PCFD classification. METHODS: This was a single-center, retrospective study conducted from prospectively collected registry…

Outpatient surgery of the first ray of the foot: post-operative pain monitoring at home.

INTRODUCTION: At present, health facilities are forced to switch to outpatient care. While it lends itself well to this organizational arrangement, first ray surgery is broadly considered as painful by patients, who are often reluctant to this treatment. The evolution of post-operative pain in patients who underwent operations for first ray surgery from D0 to D15 were studied. Secondly, the duration of the oral analgesic treatment, the patient's satisfaction level, and searched for complications were assessed. METHODS: This is an observational, single-center and single-operator study. Between

Beaming in the Charcot foot: A case series with 12-month minimum follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Charcot neuropathic arthropathy is a progressive degeneration of the weightbearing joints of the foot induced by denervation and disturbance of sensorial perception. This entity clinically behaves as a destructive fast-progressive arthropathy, resulting in loss of independent walking and often requiring amputation of the leg. This study analyzes our experience with midfoot realignment arthrodesis and stabilization by intramedullary beaming in patients with Charcot diabetic foot as a limb-sparing procedure. METHODS: Patients with Charcot foot treated in our Foot and Ankle unit betw…

EV71 vaccination impact on the incidence of encephalitis in patients with hand, foot and mouth disease.

In order to analyze the effect of EV71 vaccination on the incidence of encephalitis in patients with HFMD, 292 cases were vaccinated, and 2,486 cases were not vaccinated which were collected in 2018 and 2019. It shows that the incidence rate of encephalitis in vaccinated patients was significantly lower than that in non-vaccinated (P = .028), which suggests that EV71 vaccine has a protective effect on the occurrence of encephalitis. But some EV71 vaccinated patients still developed into encephalitis showed that they had not produced protection or protection was weak against EV71-related enceph

Pseudomembranous conjunctivitis with hand, foot and mouth disease in a pregnant woman : a case report.

BACKGROUND: Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common systemic infection that is caused by an enterovirus, normally Coxsackie A16. Generally, it affects children or immunocompromised adults. Only a few reports have described pseudomembranous conjunctivitis associated with HFMD. We aim to describe the clinical outcomes and ocular findings of a 37-year-old female with HFMD and concurrent severe pseudomembranous conjunctivitis, who was 28 weeks pregnant. CASE PRESENTATION: A female patient who was 28-weeks pregnant was referred for an ophthalmological review due to pain and injection in b…

Detection of enteroviruses during a 2018 hand, foot and mouth disease outbreak in Malaysia.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common childhood disease caused by enteroviruses. In 2018, a HFMD outbreak in Malaysia affected over 76,000 children. In this study, we used RT-qPCR and CODEHOP PCR to detect the causative agents in 89 clinically diagnosed HFMD patients in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Most (62.9%) of the children were below 3 years old. PCR with either assay detected enteroviruses in 84.2% (75/89) and CODEHOP PCR successfully typed 66.7% (50/75) of the enteroviruses. Sequencing of CODEHOP amplicons showed co-circulation of multiple enteroviruses with coxsackievirus A6 (C…

Assessment of foot perfusion: Overview of modalities, review of evidence, and identification of evidence gaps.

Patients with critical limb ischemia have nonhealing wounds and/or ischemic rest pain and are at high risk for amputation and mortality. Accurate evaluation of foot perfusion should help avoid unnecessary amputation, guide revascularization strategies, and offer efficient surveillance for patency. Our aim is to review current modalities of assessing foot perfusion in the context of the practical clinical management of patients with critical limb ischemia.

Efficacy of Bacteriophages in a Staphylococcus aureus Nondiabetic or Diabetic Foot Infection Murine Model.

This study investigated the in vivo efficacy of three bacteriophages combined compared with linezolid in two mouse models (nondiabetic and diabetic) of Staphylococcus aureus foot infection. In both models, a single injection of bacteriophages in the hindpaw showed significant antibacterial efficacy. Linezolid was as effective as bacteriophages in nondiabetic animals but ineffective in diabetic animals. These findings further support preclinical and clinical studies for the development of phage therapy.

NPWT in diabetic foot wounds-a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

PURPOSE: Negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is an adjunct modality in diabetic foot ulcerations (DFUs). Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have shown its advantage over standard approaches; however, data from observational studies remain scarce. We performed a systematic review of observational non-RCTs evaluating NPWT efficacy and safety in patients with DFU. METHODS: Electronic databases were searched for observational studies involving NPWT. The results of single-arm studies were presented as percentages of patients with the outcome of interest. A meta-analysis of comparative studies p…
