Feature-Selective Attentional Modulations in Human Frontoparietal Cortex.

UNLABELLED: Control over visual selection has long been framed in terms of a dichotomy between "source" and "site," where top-down feedback signals originating in frontoparietal cortical areas modulate or bias sensory processing in posterior visual areas. This distinction is motivated in part by observations that frontoparietal cortical areas encode task-level variables (e.g., what stimulus is currently relevant or what motor outputs are appropriate), while posterior sensory areas encode continuous or analog feature representations. Here, we present evidence that challenges this distinction. W

Subconcussive Head Impact Exposure and White Matter Tract Changes over a Single Season of Youth Football.

Purpose To examine the effects of subconcussive impacts resulting from a single season of youth (age range, 8-13 years) football on changes in specific white matter (WM) tracts as detected with diffusion-tensor imaging in the absence of clinically diagnosed concussions. Materials and Methods Head impact data were recorded by using the Head Impact Telemetry system and quantified as the combined-probability risk-weighted cumulative exposure (RWECP). Twenty-five male participants were evaluated for seasonal fractional anisotropy (FA) changes in specific WM tracts: the inferior fronto-occipital fa

The Role of the Frontal and Parietal Cortex in Proactive and Reactive Inhibitory Control: A Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Study.

Mounting evidence suggests that response inhibition involves both proactive and reactive inhibitory control, yet its underlying neural mechanisms remain elusive. In particular, the roles of the right inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and inferior parietal lobe (IPL) in proactive and reactive inhibitory control are still under debate. This study aimed at examining the causal role of the right IFG and IPL in proactive and reactive inhibitory control, using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and the stop signal task. Twenty-two participants completed three sessions of the stop signal task,

Microcircuitry of agranular frontal cortex: contrasting laminar connectivity between occipital and frontal areas.

Neocortex is striking in its laminar architecture. Tracer studies have uncovered anatomical connectivity among laminae, but the functional connectivity between laminar compartments is still largely unknown. Such functional connectivity can be discerned through spontaneous neural correlations during rest. Previous work demonstrated a robust pattern of mesoscopic resting-state connectivity in macaque primary visual cortex (V1) through interlaminar cross-frequency coupling. Here we investigated whether this pattern generalizes to other cortical areas by comparing resting-state laminar connectivit

Regional cerebral blood flow single photon emission computed tomography for detection of Frontotemporal dementia in people with suspected dementia.

BACKGROUND: In the UK, dementia affects 5% of the population aged over 65 years and 25% of those over 85 years. Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) represents one subtype and is thought to account for up to 16% of all degenerative dementias. Although the core of the diagnostic process in dementia rests firmly on clinical and cognitive assessments, a wide range of investigations are available to aid diagnosis.Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) is an established clinical tool that uses an intravenously injected radiolabelled tracer to map blood flow

Spontaneous neuronal activity predicts intersubject variations in executive control of attention.

Executive control of attention regulates our thoughts, emotion and behavior. Individual differences in executive control are associated with task-related differences in brain activity. But it is unknown whether attentional differences depend on endogenous (resting state) brain activity and to what extent regional fluctuations and functional connectivity contribute to individual variations in executive control processing. Here, we explored the potential contribution of intrinsic brain activity to executive control by using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Using the am

Object size modulates fronto-parietal activity during reaching movements.

In both monkeys and humans, reaching-related sensorimotor transformations involve the activation of a wide fronto-parietal network. Recent neurophysiological evidence suggests that some components of this network host not only neurons encoding the direction of arm reaching movements, but also neurons whose involvement is modulated by the intrinsic features of an object (e.g. size and shape). To date, it has yet to be investigated whether a similar modulation is evident in the human reaching-related areas. To fill this gap, we asked participants to reach towards either a small or a large object

Fronto-parietal network supports context-dependent speech comprehension.

Knowing the context of a discourse is an essential prerequisite for comprehension. Here we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to disclose brain networks supporting context-dependent speech comprehension. During fMRI, 20 participants listened to 1-min spoken narratives preceded by pictures that were either contextually matching or mismatching with the narrative. Matching pictures increased narrative comprehension, decreased hemodynamic activity in Broca׳s area, and enhanced its functional connectivity with left anterior superior frontal gyrus, bilateral inferior parietal cortex,

Differentiating intended sensory outcome from underlying motor actions in the human brain.

To achieve a certain sensory outcome, multiple actions can be executed. For example, unlocking a door might require clockwise or counterclockwise key turns depending on regional norms. Using fMRI in healthy human subjects, we examined the neural networks that dissociate intended sensory outcome from underlying motor actions. Subjects controlled a figure on a computer screen by performing pen traces on an MR-compatible digital tablet. Our design allowed us to dissociate intended sensory outcome (moving the figure in a certain direction) from the underlying motor action (horizontal/vertical pen

Self-disorder and brain processing of proprioception in schizophrenia spectrum patients: a re-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Anomalies of self-awareness (self-disorders, SDs) are theorized to be basic to schizophrenia psychopathology. We have previously observed dysfunction of brain processing of proprioception in schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SZS). We hypothesized that SDs could be associated with abnormalities of early contralateral proprioceptive evoked oscillatory brain activity. METHODS: We investigated the association between proprioceptive evoked potential components and SDs in a re-analysis of data from a subsample (n = 12) of SZS patients who had previously been observed with deviant propri

Dynamic oscillatory processes governing cued orienting and allocation of auditory attention.

In everyday listening situations, we need to constantly switch between alternative sound sources and engage attention according to cues that match our goals and expectations. The exact neuronal bases of these processes are poorly understood. We investigated oscillatory brain networks controlling auditory attention using cortically constrained fMRI-weighted magnetoencephalography/EEG source estimates. During consecutive trials, participants were instructed to shift attention based on a cue, presented in the ear where a target was likely to follow. To promote audiospatial attention effects, the

Coherent delta-band oscillations between cortical areas correlate with decision making.

Coherent oscillations in the theta-to-gamma frequency range have been proposed as a mechanism that coordinates neural activity in large-scale cortical networks in sensory, motor, and cognitive tasks. Whether this mechanism also involves coherent oscillations at delta frequencies (1-4 Hz) is not known. Rather, delta oscillations have been associated with slow-wave sleep. Here, we show coherent oscillations in the delta frequency band between parietal and frontal cortices during the decision-making component of a somatosensory discrimination task. Importantly, the magnitude of this delta-band co

Interictal epileptiform discharges and phasic phenomena of REM sleep.

The objective of this study was to assess the effect of phasic rapid eye movement (REM) sleep events on interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs). Twelve patients with focal epilepsy and IEDs during REM sleep were examined by video-EEG monitoring. The number of IEDs was calculated in different REM sleep episodes according to the rate of rapid eye movements. A negative correlation was identified between the occurrence of rapid eye movements and IEDs, indicating that the suppression of propagation of IEDs during REM sleep is enhanced by phasic REM sleep events, probably as a result of phasic act

Structural covariance in the hallucinating brain: a voxel-based morphometry study.

BACKGROUND: Neuroimaging studies have indicated that a number of cortical regions express altered patterns of structural covariance in schizophrenia. The relation between these alterations and specific psychotic symptoms is yet to be investigated. We used voxel-based morphometry to examine regional grey matter volumes and structural covariance associated with severity of auditory verbal hallucinations. METHODS: We applied optimized voxel-based morphometry to volumetric magnetic resonance imaging data from 26 patients with medication-resistant auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs); statistical

Reflection of the pattern of cortical activation in the phase structure of the human EEG.

A total of 22 healthy subjects in the EEG laboratory and 62 patients in the clinical functional diagnostic unit were studied. Spontaneous EEG recordings were made using the 10-20 scheme relative to combined ear electrodes in the state of rest with the eyes closed and open and during various functional loads. Traces were analyzed by computer animation of the EEG phase structure. The main concept of the method for extracting phase structure was based on not using a single reference lead. Time shifts were measured only between neighboring electrodes, with the result that the oscillations being co

Right occipital cortex suppresses male rat testosterone secretion by a pituitary-independent mechanism.

OBJECTIVES: In addition to being regulated by the hypothalamo-hypophyseal system, testosterone (T) secretion is influenced by a number of less understood mechanisms. The aim of the present study was to examine whether defined areas of the right cerebral cortex could modulate T production. METHODS: In adult male Wistar rats right frontal or occipital decortication, anterior or posterior callosotomy and corresponding sham-operations were performed. After 7-day survival time, T secretion in vitro, serum T and LH concentrations were measured by RIA. RESULTS: Right occipital decortication and pos

New radiofrequency coil integrated with a stereotactic frame for intraoperative MRI-controlled stereotactically guided brain surgery.

Mislocalization errors caused by MR image distortions or brain shift are one of the main causes of complications after stereotactically guided neurosurgical procedures. A special device, which could ameliorate such effects and provide intraoperative acquisition of MR images of sufficient diagnostic accuracy, was developed. It is composed of a radiofrequency receiver coil integrated with a modified Komai stereotactic frame and a Sugita four-pin head holder. Clinical testing revealed that the use of the device during stereotactically guided procedures under the control of low magnetic field stre

Distribution of brain atrophy in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia.

Marked brain atrophy occurs in frontotemporal dementia (FTD) yet substantial variation between cases is seen. Recently, a four-level staging scheme which reflects increasing disease duration, severity of dementia and degree of neurodegeneration was described. In the present study, the extent and magnitude of atrophy in behavioral variant FTD and its relationship to disease duration and pathological subtype was further evaluated by quantifying the volume of 30 anatomically-defined regions. A validated point count technique was applied to 17 patients with FTD (9 Pick's disease, 6 dementia lackin

Paroxysmal autonomic alterations mimicking epilepsy: a case report.

A 22-year-old male patient presented with paroxysmal hyperhidrosis, mydriasis, hypertension, and tachycardia. Cranial and cervical MRI revealed focal atrophy in the high order zone of the central autonomic network and syringomyelia. His physical and neurological examinations were unremarkable. Physiological testing included EEG, SPECT, serum/urine tests and autonomic testing. A poor response was achieved with the medical and interventional procedures employed. As the central autonomic network is an integral component of the internal regulation system of the brain, any lesion, no matter where i
