Empathic responsiveness in amygdala and anterior cingulate cortex in youths with psychopathic traits.

BACKGROUND: Psychopathic traits are associated with increases in antisocial behaviors such as aggression and are characterized by reduced empathy for others' distress. This suggests that psychopathic traits may also impair empathic pain sensitivity. However, whether psychopathic traits affect responses to the pain of others versus the self has not been previously assessed. METHOD: We used whole-brain functional magnetic resonance imaging to measure neural activation in 14 adolescents with oppositional defiant disorder or conduct disorder and psychopathic traits, as well as 21 healthy controls

Stress differentially affects fear conditioning in men and women.

Stress and fear conditioning processes are both important vulnerability factors in the development of psychiatric disorders. In behavioral studies considerable sex differences in fear learning have been observed after increases of the stress hormone cortisol. But neuroimaging experiments, which give insights into the neurobiological correlates of stress × sex interactions in fear conditioning, are lacking so far. In the current functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study, we tested whether a psychosocial stressor (Trier Social Stress Test) compared to a control condition influenced subs

fMRI pain activation in the periaqueductal gray in healthy volunteers during the cold pressor test.

The periaqueductal gray (PAG), a brain area belonging to the descending pain modulatory system, plays a crucial role in pain perception. Little information is available on the relationship between PAG activation and perceived pain intensity. In this study, we acquired functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans from the PAG during the cold pressor test, a model for tonic pain, in 12 healthy volunteers. fMRI data were acquired with a 12-channel head-coil and a 3-Tesla scanner and analyzed with Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM8) software. During the cold pressor test, fMRI showed signi

Brain computer interfaces, a review.

A brain-computer interface (BCI) is a hardware and software communications system that permits cerebral activity alone to control computers or external devices. The immediate goal of BCI research is to provide communications capabilities to severely disabled people who are totally paralyzed or 'locked in' by neurological neuromuscular disorders, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, brain stem stroke, or spinal cord injury. Here, we review the state-of-the-art of BCIs, looking at the different steps that form a standard BCI: signal acquisition, preprocessing or signal enhancement, feature ext

K(v) 7 (KCNQ) channel openers normalize central 2-deoxyglucose uptake in a mouse model of mania and increase prefrontal cortical and hippocampal serine-9 phosphorylation levels of GSK3β.

Several metabolic neuroimaging studies have indicated that bipolar patients with mania exhibit alterations in metabolic activity, suggesting that perturbations in corticolimbic function contribute to the functional deficits associated with the disease. Because pharmacological stimulation of K(v)7 channel function has shown anti-manic like efficacy in the D-amphetamine and chlordiazepoxide (AMPH+CDP) induced hyperactivity mouse model of mania, we addressed whether this effect of K(v)7 channels could be associated with changes in cerebral [¹⁴C]2-deoxyglucose (2-DG) uptake, a surrogate marker of

Beyond neurovascular: migraine as a dysfunctional neurolimbic pain network.

No single model of migraine explains all of the known features of the disorder. Migraine has recently been characterized as an abnormality in pain-modulating circuits in the brainstem. The periaqueductal gray appears to have a critical role in migraine genesis and has been labeled the "migraine generator." The concept of a "pain matrix," rather than a specific locus of pain, is widely accepted in the pain literature and offers a new dimension to understanding migraine. Recent neuroimaging studies of migraineurs suggest altered functional connectivity between brainstem pain-modulating circuits

Infrared thermal imaging of rat somatosensory cortex with whisker stimulation.

The present study aims to validate the applicability of infrared (IR) thermal imaging for the study of brain function through experiments on the rat barrel cortex. Regional changes in neural activity within the brain produce alterations in local thermal equilibrium via increases in metabolic activity and blood flow. We studied the relationship between temperature change and neural activity in anesthetized rats using IR imaging to visualize stimulus-induced changes in the somatosensory cortex of the brain. Sensory stimulation of the vibrissae (whiskers) was given for 10 s using an oscillating w

An eight component decision-making model for problem gambling: a systems approach to stimulate integrative research.

Problem Gambling (PG) represents a serious problem for affected individuals, their families and society in general. Previous approaches to u … ing the effects of each component on PG and decision-making across behavioural, neuropsychological, functional neuroimaging and genetic levels. Last, an effect size analysis of the growing pharmacotherapy literature is presented. It is hoped that this model will stimulate multi-level research to solidify our comprehension of biased decision-making in PG and suggest pharm …

(Don't) panic in the scanner! How panic patients with agoraphobia experience a functional magnetic resonance imaging session.

Although functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has gained increasing importance in investigating neural substrates of anxiety disorders, less is known about the stress eliciting properties of the scanner environment itself. The aim of the study was to investigate feasibility, self-reported distress and anxiety management strategies during an fMRI experiment in a comprehensive sample of patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia (PD/AG). Within the national research network PANIC-NET, n=89 patients and n=90 controls participated in a multicenter fMRI study. Subjects completed a retrosp

Two-week administration of the combined serotonin-noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor duloxetine augments functioning of mesolimbic incentive processing circuits.

BACKGROUND: Anhedonia and lack of motivation are core symptoms of major depressive disorder (MDD). Neuroimaging studies in MDD patients have shown reductions in reward-related activity in terminal regions of the mesolimbic dopamine (DA) system, such as the ventral striatum. Monoamines have been implicated in both mesolimbic incentive processing and the mechanism of action of antidepressant drugs. However, not much is known about antidepressant effects on mesolimbic incentive processing in humans, which might be related to the effects on anhedonia. METHODS: To investigate the short-term effect

Spectra-temporal patterns underlying mental addition: an ERP and ERD/ERS study.

Functional neuroimaging data have shown that mental calculation involves fronto-parietal areas that are composed of different subsystems shared with other cognitive functions such as working memory and language. Event-related potential (ERP) analysis has also indicated sequential information changes during the calculation process. However, little is known about the dynamic properties of oscillatory networks in this process. In the present study, we applied both ERP and event-related (de-)synchronization (ERS/ERD) analyses to EEG data recorded from normal human subjects performing tasks for seq…

The effect of stimulus context on pitch representations in the human auditory cortex.

Neuroimaging studies of pitch coding seek to identify pitch-related responses separate from responses to other properties of the stimulus, such as its energy onset, and other general aspects of the listening context. The current study reports the first attempt to evaluate these modulatory influences using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) measures of cortical pitch representations. Stimulus context was manipulated using a 'classical stimulation paradigm' (whereby successive pitch stimuli were separated by gaps of silence) and a 'continuous stimulation paradigm' (whereby successive p

Volitional control of anterior insula activity modulates the response to aversive stimuli. A real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

BACKGROUND: A promising new approach to cognitive neuroscience based on real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (rtfMRI) demonstrated that the learned regulation of the neurophysiological activity in circumscribed brain regions can be used as an independent variable to observe its effects on behavior. Here, for the first time, we investigated the modulatory effect of learned regulation of blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) response in the left anterior insula on the perception of visual emotional stimuli. METHODS: Three groups of participants (n = 27) were tested: two underwent

Changes in neuronal correlates of body image processing by means of cognitive-behavioural body image therapy for eating disorders: a randomized controlled fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Previous neuroimaging studies have demonstrated abnormalities in visual body image processing in anorexia and bulimia nervosa, possibly underlying body image disturbance in these disorders. Although cognitive behavioural interventions have been shown to be successful in improving body image disturbance in eating disorders, no randomized controlled study has yet analysed treatment-induced changes in neuronal correlates of visual body image processing. METHOD: Altogether, 32 females with eating disorders were randomly assigned either to a manualized cognitive behavioural body image

Brain areas involved in acupuncture treatment on functional dyspepsia patients: a PET-CT study.

Neuroimaging studies on brain responses to acupuncture stimulations have received considerable attention recently. The majority of these studies are centered on healthy controls (HC) and neuropathy, while little work has addressed other disorders. This study aimed to investigate the influence of acupuncture stimulations on brain activities in functional dyspepsia (FD) patients. Eight FD patients and eight healthy controls (HC) were involved in this study. Each HC received an 18F-FDG PET-CT scan at baseline, while each patient received scans at baseline and after acupuncture stimulations. Manua

Sensory processing in the brain related to the control of food intake.

Complementary neurophysiological recordings in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) and functional neuroimaging in human subjects show that the primary taste cortex in the rostral insula and adjoining frontal operculum provides separate and combined representations of the taste, temperature and texture (including viscosity and fat texture) of food in the mouth independently of hunger and thus of reward value and pleasantness. One synapse on, in the orbitofrontal cortex, these sensory inputs are for some neurons combined by learning with olfactory and visual inputs. Different neurons respond to dif…

Monocular activation of V1 and V2 in amblyopic adults measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging.

PURPOSE: Although previous neuroimaging efforts clearly indicate visual cortical dysfunction in adults with amblyopia, the extent of abnormalities remains unclear. METHODS: This functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study directly compared activity in visual cortex produced by monocular stimulation in 18 adults (six esotropic strabismics, six anisometropes, and six controls). Measures were made in three cortical regions-of-interest, individually defined using standard retinotopic mapping techniques in the nonamblyopic eye, corresponding to extrafoveal V1, extrafoveal V2, and the foveal
