Malaria is still an important health problem worldwide, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. In Turkey, the most common type of malaria is Plasmodium vivax, and endemic regions are South-Eastern Anatolia and Çukurova. Due to globalization and tourism, travel-associated infection due to P. falciparum is also seen more frequently in Turkey. P. falciparum malaria can be highly fatal despite optimal antimalarial treatment. We present a case of falciparum malaria in a Turkish radiologist who went to Africa for occupational reasons and come back with malaria accompanied by uveitis, hyperglycemia, and

This paper focuses on the application of dicentric chromosome assay biodosimetry in cases of low-dose overexposures to professionals working in nuclear medicine and discusses how to present the results and associated uncertainties, to make possible a better understanding of biodosimetric reports. Five examples are presented of low or possibly zero exposure dose that are illustrative of typical problems that arise in occupational settings, in this instance in nuclear medicine departments. This is a scenario of minor concern in terms of health consequences but it is relevant in legal terms. They

A variety and rate of non-cancer diseases occurred in humans as a result of chronic exposure to ionizing radiation or to electromagnetic radiation (EMR) of high and superhigh frequency have been compared. The intensity of EMR was slightly higher than a sanitary standard for population. A risk of health impairments in workers having occupational exposure to EMR was assessed on the basis of Selie's concept of development of non-specific reaction of the body to chronic stress factors (general adaptation syndrome), models of changes in the body compensatory reserves and calculations of radiation r

For many persons, 'Holocaust-abomination' is a fixed point on their moral compass: if anything can be evil, it was. Yet at least one of the justifications deployed by its perpetrators (the eugenics argument) involves widely-held values concerning human health and procreation. Hence persons endorsing many current activities based on those values (e.g. genetic counselling) have been charged with being on a morally deplorable slippery slope. This paper sketches the necessary structure of a moral position capable of consistently embracing those values without placing its occupants on that slippery

1. The increasing numbers of pregnant women and women of childbearing age who are employed and exposed to hazardous substances pose occupational health concerns. 2. The findings of this study indicate the importance of not minimizing concern about exposure to radiation. Radiation monitoring should be implemented to a greater extent, and methods to measure low dose chronic radiation exposure should be developed. 3. Synergy between the adverse reproductive effects from multiple workplace factors among nurses, including but not limited to radiation, video display terminal use, and chemotherapeuti

Injuries caused by animals and treated at the University Hospital of Umeå were analysed. Dogs caused nearly one-half of the injuries, while horses caused one-third of the injuries and the highest number of fractures. The 'cost' of treatment and sickness benefit was fairly evenly distributed between horse-, cattle-, and dog-related injuries. The average 'cost' per injured person was, however, highest in those injured in cattle accidents and moose-car collisions. The impact of animal-related injuries on the health care and social security systems was similar to occupational accidents and car acc

OBJECTIVES: Special education teachers (SETs) work with students with disabilities. To get and keep these students' attention during the lesson, they may use their voices with high loudness and frequent pitch changes. These situations can be tiring for their voices and affect their vocal health. This study aimed to compare SETs' voice fatigue, reflux symptoms, and self-assessments according to their voice use habits in their work and social lives.
METHODS: A total of 208 SETs were included. A Teacher Voice Use Habits Questionnaire was developed by considering the literature, taking expert opi

BACKGROUND: The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has led to rising death tolls and stressed healthcare systems, resulting in an unprecedented psychological stress on healthcare workers worldwide. However, the majority of studies only accounted for frontline healthcare workers with direct patient exposure.
AIM: This study aims to look at the psychological impact of COVID-19 in a specific, vulnerable and yet hidden group of healthcare workers, namely laboratory healthcare workers who are at high risk exposure to SARS-CoV-2 virus from handling infected patients' blood samples, in ad

The study was conducted to assess the prevalence and incidence of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in a large modern footwear factory and to identify factors predictive of CTS. To this end, 199 workers were examined in 1996, and 162 of them were re-examined in 1997. Ergonomic and psychosocial risk factors of CTS were assessed by workpost analysis and self-administered questionnaire. The prevalence of CTS at baseline in 1996 and in 1997 was 16.6% (95%CI: 11.4-21.7) and 11.7% (95%CI: 6.7-16.8), respectively. The incidence rate of CTS in 1997 was 11.7% (95%CI: 6.7-7.8). BACKGROUND AND AIM: There is a high prevalence in the Spanish general population of some cardiovascular risk factors like overweight, obesity and hypercholesterolaemia. But there is lack of research on Spanish seafarers. On the other hand, there is strong evidence of the cardiovascular risk predictive value of some biomarkers. The purpose of this work was to study the convenience of the introduction of detailed diet questionnaires and the measurement of some biomarkers in the pre-embarkation medical examination.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seafarers undergoing medical checkup during 2011 in Madrid

Gas station workers (GSWs) are at elevated risk of morbidities associated with exposure to petrochemical substances. This cross-sectional study assessed the prevalence and examined demographics and occupation-related risk factors associated with self-rated ill-health among GSWs in Kuwait. Structured questionnaire was used to record self-rated ill-health from 460 selected GSWs of South-Asian origin. Prevalence of self-rated ill-health conditions was computed. Random-intercept multivariable logistic regression model was used to identify the demographics and/or work-place related potential risk f

In the United States (U.S.), federal legislation requiring the use of safety-engineered sharp devices, along with an array of other protective measures, has played a critical role in reducing healthcare workers' (HCWs) risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens over the last 20 years. We present the history of U.S. regulatory and legislative actions regarding occupational blood exposures, and review evidence of the impact of these actions. In one large network of U.S. hospitals using the Exposure Prevention Information Network (EPINet) sharps injury surveillance program, overall inj

Agricultural workers in the United States face a disproportionate burden of infectious diseases, including tuberculosis, HIV, coccidioidomycosis, viral hepatitis, and COVID-19, driven by occupational exposures, crowded housing, poverty, and limited healthcare access. Despite this burden, farmworkers have among the lowest rates of healthcare utilization of any US working population, and traditional clinic-based delivery models are poorly suited to the realities of agricultural labor. Community health workers (CHWs), known as promotores de salud in Latino communities, offer a well-established st

The increasing frequency and intensity of extreme heat events pose severe health risks to outdoor workers. Despite growing global recognition of occupational heat illness, evidence from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) remains limited. This cross-sectional study surveyed 320 construction and welding workers to assess perceived heat-related health risk and behavioral adaptation in Bangladesh. Multinomial logistic regression examined factors associated with adaptive behaviors. Over 80% of workers perceived themselves as vulnerable, commonly reporting excessive sweating, thirst, cramps, i
