We measured glomerular filtration rate (GFR), effective renal plasma flow (ERPF) and the concentrating capacity of the kidneys in children after autologous BMT. Twenty-six patients had received TBI in their conditioning regimen and 14 patients had received chemotherapy only. Median follow-up was 10 years. Mean GFR before BMT was close to normal in both groups. Mean GFR decreased from 124 [CI 114,134] ml/min/1.73 m(2) before BMT to 99 [CI 82,115] ml/min/1.73 m(2) 6 months after BMT in the + TBI group (P < 0.001). Internal genitalia and uterine blood flow were assessed by ultrasound in 12 females 4.0-10.9 years after total body irradiation and allogeneic bone marrow transplantation for childhood leukaemia or lymphoma. PURPOSE: Long-term therapy of haematology patients has been facilitated by permanent indwelling central venous catheters. We performed a retrospective study to compare the problems occurring with a externalized catheter (Hickman) versus a totally implanted port catheter.

Five hundred two central venous catheters inserted in 366 patients were evaluated prospectively over a one-year period to determine the frequency and risk factors associated with catheter-related sepsis. For study purposes, in cases in which catheter infection was suspected but the initial blood cultures were negative, the catheters were replaced by guidewire technique; otherwise, the catheters were routinely changed after 21 days by guidewire technique. We reviewed the hospital charges, underlying diagnoses, and hospital outcomes in 39 patients with adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) admitted to the respiratory ICU of a university hospital between July 1979 and June 1981. Charges per patient ranged from $9263 to $187,893 with a median of $52,894. Median ICU charges were $2430/day. Only 7 patients survived their hospitalization.
