OBJECTIVE: To review the effectiveness and safety of rifaximin in the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy (HE).
DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE (1990-October 2008) was searched using the terms rifaximin, rifamycins, hepatic encephalopathy, liver cirrhosis, and acute liver failure. Other sources included the bibliographies of pertinent articles as well as programs and abstracts from infectious diseases and gastrointestinal diseases meetings.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Hepatic adenoma (HA) is a rare benign tumor of the liver. Tumor resection has been recommended for symptomatic or enlarging HA because of the risk of intraperitoneal, intrahepatic hemorrhage or even the development of hepatocellular carcinoma. From 1989 to 2003 we reviewed the medical records and radiology files of 28 patients with a proved diagnosis of hepatic adenoma. This article summarizes a single-center experience with surgical treatment of hepatic adenoma.
METHODOLOGY: 24 patients were female and 4 were male. Twenty-two patients had a history of oral contraceptive use.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenetic mechanisms of hepatic injury in perinatal asphyxia (PNA) are similar to those in ischemic hepatitis, yet liver involvement is currently not considered a component of multi-organ failure in PNA.
METHODS: A retrospective study was done on 56 newborns with PNA. Hepatocyte injury was diagnosed based on elevated serum alanine transaminase level (>100 U/L, twice upper normal) with subsequent normalization.

The present study describes the technique and evaluation of postsurgical results, hospital stay, and follow-up of patients who underwent hepatic cyst surgical treatment by laparoscopic access. Twelve patients presenting liver cystic disease were included in this research. Clinical conditions, laboratorial and radiologic examinations, surgical technique, complications, and postoperative follow-up were discussed. In our series, the morbidity rate was 25%. No mortality was observed in the postoperative period. Conversion to open surgery was necessary in 1 case, owing to hemorrhage. No recurrence

The presence of granulomas in the liver raises consideration of a wide differential diagnosis, but in most Western series, sarcoidosis accounts for a majority of cases. This review will focus specifically on the diagnosis of and therapy for hepatic sarcoidosis. Sarcoidosis is a systemic granulomatous disease of unknown etiology. Various benign and malignant conditions could cause biliary obstruction. Compression of extrahepatic bile duct (EBD) by right hepatic artery was reported as a right hepatic artery syndrome but all cases were compressed EBD from stomach side. Our case compressed from dorsum was not yet reported, so it was thought to be a very rare case. We present here the first case of bile duct obstruction due to the compression of EBD from dorsum by right hepatic artery.

We present a 3-year-old boy born with anomalous hepatic venous drainage into the left atrium and a small sinus venosus atrial septum defect, in whom pulmonary arteriovenous malformations developed with progressive cyanosis. Surgical redirection of the hepatic venous drainage to the right atrium and closure of the atrial septal defect led to regression of the pulmonary arteriovenous malformations. However, in contrast to other reports, progressive pulmonary hypertension developed postoperatively.
