The risks of epidemics in Reunion island depend on determining or favourable factors. The determining factors, links in the epidemic chain, may or may not exist but they can be introduced from the outside. The risk of importing these factors is especially important when the exchanges with the epidemic zones are easy and frequent. One hundred and forty-two residents of a geriatric hospital in France were given an oral exam and interviewed by questionnaire regarding their backgrounds, physical health and oral hygiene habits. A survey of 4 selected areas of Papua New Guinea was made during 1979-80 to establish the prevalence of trachoma and its complications, and blindness rates and causes, in those areas. Trachoma was found to be endemic in all the areas studied, but was of mild intensity and rarely caused visual deficit. It is suggested that the most practical step towards reducing the prevalence of trachoma in P.N.G., in the future, is not by a mass treatment campaign, but by basic education in simple hygiene. The vitamin B1, B2 and B6 status of school children were studied in the Khon Kaen resettlement and irrigation area and in the Lam-takong settlement in northease Thailand using the in vitro tests based on the erythrocyte transketolase, glutathione reductase and glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase activities.
