Silver sulfadiazine (Silvadene, U.S.; Flamazine, U.K.; Flammazine, N.; Sulplata, S.A.) is the newest topical antimicrobial agent available following worldwide clinical trials. Good control of infection is achieved without pain or other demonstrable side effects, using either dressings or the exposure technic. Many burned areas kept free of infection heal without grafting. Where necessary, early preparation for and good take of grafts has been attained by utilizing this new therapeutic agent. Markedly reduced mortality from burn wound sepsis has generally been observed.

We studied two population groups (more than 1,600 patients) to determine the prevalence and clinical associations of genital tract infections with chlamydiae and herpesviruses. Base-line isolation rates for asymptomatic women having routine pelvic examinations were much lower than rates for symptomatic women. In both groups, chlamydiae were more prevalent than herpesviruses. Chlamydial infection was associated much more commonly with cervicitis (36.6%) than with vaginitis only (4.1%). During an 8-year period, 30 patients with gas-producing infections were admitted for treatment of hyperbaric oxygen. Infection was a consequence of trauma and operation in 26 cases and a complication of other diseases in 4 cases. The definitive diagnoses were clostridial myositis in 12 cases, clostridial cellulitis in 7, non-clostridial cellulitis in 9 (mainly E. coli infections); in 2 cases the diagnoses were uncertain. The occurrence of infections associated with perinatal mortality was investigated. In 1970, carcasses from 94 flocks distributed throughout Victoria were examined by microbiological and histopathological techniques. Carcasses from 4 of the same flocks were similarly examined in 1971. On the basis of critical survey of literature data and analysis of morbidity of intestinal infections in 5 towns of Donbass for 20 years and also of studying 5148 case histories an attempt is made of rational explantation of the causes of growth during the last years of the incidence of Sonne dysentery salmonelloses, escherichioses and other diseases caused by conditionally-pathogenic microorganisms. The importance of improvement of nomenclature and of statistical classification of intestinal infections was demonstrated.
