Origin and dynamics of epileptic activity in a symptomatic case of Panayiotopoulos syndrome: correlation with clinical manifestations.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to demonstrate the dynamics and structure of the epileptic network and provide a tentative correlation with the clinical manifestations, in a symptomatic case of Panayiotopoulos syndrome (PS). METHODS: JP, 5-year-old girl. Gestational period and developmental milestones were normal. At age 4 years, two episodes of recurrent vomiting, tonic eye deviation and consciousness impairment lasting for about 30 min occurred. Multifocal spikes were apparent over frontal areas in the EEG and MRI demonstrated an inferior parietal lobe (IPL) lesion. RESULTS: A long-ter

Voice production model integrating boundary-layer analysis of glottal flow and source-filter coupling.

A voice production model is created in this work by considering essential aerodynamic and acoustic phenomena in human voice production. A precise flow analysis is performed based on a boundary-layer approximation and the viscous-inviscid interaction between the boundary layer and the core flow. This flow analysis can supply information on the separation point of the glottal flow and the thickness of the boundary layer, both of which strongly depend on the glottal configuration and yield an effective prediction of the flow behavior. When the flow analysis is combined with the modified two-mass

Decreased α event-related synchronization in the left posterior temporal cortex in schizophrenia: a magnetoencephalography-beamformer study.

Alpha rhythm is one of the most prominent electromagnetic changes in the brain, and electroencephalography (EEG) alpha reactivity disturbance may sometimes represent an early sign of cerebral dysfunction. Although magnetoencephalography (MEG) has a better spatial resolution than EEG, it has not extensively been used to explore alpha-power change deficits in schizophrenia as a possible neurophysiological marker of the disease. The purpose of this study was to use MEG to identify abnormalities in alpha synchronization induced by eye-closing in schizophrenia patients compared to healthy controls,

Immunomodulative effects of mesenchymal stem cells derived from human embryonic stem cells in vivo and in vitro.

OBJECTIVE: Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) have recently been reported as an unlimited source of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). The present study not only provides an identical and clinically compliant MSC source derived from hESCs (hESC-MSCs), but also describes the immunomodulative effects of hESC-MSCs in vitro and in vivo for a carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4))-induced liver inflammation model. METHODS: Undifferentiated hESCs were treated with Rho-associated kinase (ROCK) inhibitor and induced to fibroblast-looking cells. These cells were tested for their surface markers and multilineage di

Rapid determination of tacrine and other drug metabolites in microsomal incubate by newly developed targeting algorithm on UHPLC/TOFMS.

A rapid simultaneous determination method for in vitro Cytochrome P450 (CYP) activity assay of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroacridin-9-amine (tacrine) metabolites using ultra high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) coupled with computer-assisted in-source collision induced dissociation (CID) monitoring was investigated. In general, enzyme inhibition assays require quantitative analysis of incubates with drugs using various concentrations of substrates/inhibitors. The assay of CYP isozyme inhibition is an important informational step in the drug discovery process and, with the many substrates listed

A heuristic optimization approach for Air Quality Monitoring Network design with the simultaneous consideration of multiple pollutants.

An interactive optimization methodology for allocating the number and configuration of an Air Quality Monitoring Network (AQMN) in a vast area to identify the impact of multiple pollutants is described. A mathematical model based on the multiple cell approach (MCA) was used to create monthly spatial distributions for the concentrations of the pollutants emitted from different emission sources. These spatial temporal patterns were subject to a heuristic optimization algorithm to identify the optimal configuration of a monitoring network. The objective of the optimization is to provide maximum i

Is anterograde amnesia a special case of retrograde amnesia?

In anterograde amnesia, memory loss is obtained for events that occur subsequent to the traumatic insult. But because the effects of an anterograde agent or treatment usually last for minutes, or even hours, after the nominal training event, processing of information may be altered during the postacquisition period as well as during acquisition. Since posttraining manipulations are themselves capable of modulating memory, or inducing retrograde amnesia, the memory loss due to a putative anterograde treatment may instead represent retrograde processes. The present experiment examined this poten

Duplicate sources of pulmonary blood supply in pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect.

In pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect and major aortopulmonary collateral arteries, there is a tendency for each collateral artery to be the sole supply to a particular region of lung. On injection into a collateral artery, however, "wash-out" of contrast medium by non-opacified blood from a second source is sometimes seen. Alternatively, contrast medium may faintly "wash-in" to an adjacent lobar artery supplied from a second source. "Wash-in" and "wash-out" therefore show that a duplicate blood supply exists. To assess the importance of these phenomena, we reviewed the angiogram

Pathogenesis and immunological aspects of experimental histoplasmosis in cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis).

Studies were carried out to obtain basic information on the pathogenesis of experimental histoplasmosis in Cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) and to determine whether such infected primates can be used as a source of positive reference sera in serological tests for histoplasmosis. Ten monkeys were inoculated intraperitoneally with approximately 9.1 x 10(7) viable Histoplasma capsulatum yeast-form cells or cell aggregates. At periodical intervals, their sera were tested for antibodies to H. capsulatum by the complement fixation (CF), immunodiffusion, and latex agglutination tests. Selecte

An algorithm for determining etch sequences for CR-39.

CR-39 is a plastic commonly used to detect charged particles in inertial confinement fusion or high energy density physics experiments. Charged particles leave trails of molecular damage in the plastic, which are then chemically etched to form visible microscopic tracks that can be counted. The sequence and duration of the chemical etches must be carefully chosen to recover high quality data. In this paper, we present a new algorithm that was developed to automatically determine reasonable CR-39 etching sequences for proton radiography experiments at the Omega Laser Facility. This model incorp

Larry Jacoby's research on aging and memory: Review and commentary.

This article reviews Larry Jacoby's experimental and theoretical work on age-related differences in perception and memory. Starting with a dual-processing model involving familiarity and recollection, Jacoby's work identified two broad patterns: one showing an age-related decrement in recollection but none in familiarity; the second proposing that the age-related impairment in recollection often fails to oppose the misleading effects of familiarity and habit associated with erroneous incoming information. These ideas, and the further notions of processing fluency, accessibility bias, source-co

Environmental Investigation of a Campylobacteriosis Outbreak Among Wedding Attendees - York County, Pennsylvania, 2025.

In early June 2025, approximately 80 persons attended a wedding at a venue in York County, Pennsylvania. Within 3 days, multiple attendees reported experiencing gastrointestinal illness. On June 23, the Pennsylvania Department of Health (PDOH) and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) contacted CDC to request assistance after PDOH became aware of a laboratory-confirmed Campylobacter jejuni infection and reports of approximately 20 additional symptomatic attendees, with epidemiologic information implicating exposure to untreated spring water at the venue as a common exposure source.

Emerging imaging techniques for acute pancreatitis.

Acute pancreatitis (AP) is caused by acute inflammation of the pancreas and adjacent tissue and is a common source of abdominal pain. The current CT and MRI evaluation of AP is mostly based on morphologic features. Recent advances in image acquisition and analysis offer the opportunity to go beyond morphologic features. Advanced MR techniques such as diffusion-weighted imaging, as well as T1 and T2 mapping, can potentially quantify signal changes reflective of underlying tissue abnormalities. Advanced analytic techniques such as radiomics and artificial neural networks (ANNs) offer the promise

The Systemic Synuclein Sampling Study: toward a biomarker for Parkinson's disease.

The search for a biomarker for Parkinson's disease (PD) has led to a surge in literature describing peripheral α-synuclein (aSyn) in both biofluids and biopsy/autopsy tissues. Despite encouraging results, attempts to capitalize on this promise have fallen woefully short. The Systemic Synuclein Sampling Study (S4) is uniquely designed to identify a reproducible diagnostic and progression biomarker for PD. S4 will evaluate aSyn in multiple tissues and biofluids within the same subject and across the disease spectrum to identify the optimal biomarker source and provide vital information on the ev

Pain and dualism: Which dualism?

In the literature, the allegation to pursue approaches grounded on Cartesian dualism in medicine is widespread. In this paper, I argue that dualism informing biomedicine has not only to do with a Cartesian view of mind and body, but that multiple dualisms are at play in biomedical approach to disease, especially regarding complex pain conditions. A form of epistemological dualism entailing the primacy of the physician's model of knowledge on the patient's direct experience of suffering is pointed out as the source of the inadequate medical attitude towards pain, particularly in relation to its

Analysis of the Papal Benediction Sign: The ulnar neuropathy of St. Peter.

The origin of the Papal Benediction Sign has been a source of controversy for many generations of medical students. The question has been whether the Papal Benediction Sign posture is the result of an injury to the median nerve or to the ulnar nerve. The increasingly popular use of online "chat rooms" and the vast quantities of information available on the internet has led to an increasing level of confusion. Looking in major anatomy texts, anatomy and board review books as well as numerous internet sites the answer remains unresolved. Through the analysis of functional anatomy of the hand, cu
