PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We summarize the recent literature investigating exposure to four nonchemical stressors (financial stress, racism, psycho … mmune and endocrine systems, and cell growth and survival were highlighted across numerous studies. Maternal exposure to nonchemical stressors is associated with epigenetic and/or genomic changes in a tissue-specific manner among inflammatory, immune, endocrine, and cell growth-related pathways, which may act as mediating pathways to perinatal health outcomes. BACKGROUND: Although the incidence of gastroschisis is increasing, risk factors are not clearly identified.
METHODS: Using the Linked Birth Database from the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development from 1995 to 2012, patients with gastroschisis were identified by ICD-9 diagnosis/procedure code or birth certificate designation. Logistic regressions examined demographics, birth factors, and maternal exposures on risk of gastroschisis.
RESULTS: The prevalence of gastroschisis was 2.7 cases per 10,000 live births. Patients with gastroschisis had no difference in fetal expo…

BACKGROUND: Neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (NAIT), caused by maternal antibodies raised against alloantigens carried on foetal platelets, is a very common haematological abnormality in newborns worldwide. However, baseline data on NAIT in China are lacking. Therefore, this study seeks to explore the incidence of alloantibody against the human platelet antigen (HPA) in pregnant women and its associations with NAIT in China.
METHODS: A multicentre, prospective cohort study design will be used, and 55,497 pregnant women will be recruited for the first screening of the anti-HPA antibody at

BACKGROUND: Cross-sectional studies have suggested that prenatal farm exposures might protect against allergic disease and increase the expression of receptors of the innate immune system. However, epidemiologic evidence supporting the association with atopic dermatitis remains inconsistent.
OBJECTIVE: To study the association between prenatal farm-related exposures and atopic dermatitis in a prospective study. We further analyzed the association between the expression of innate immune genes at birth and atopic dermatitis.
METHODS: A total of 1063 children who participated in a birth cohort

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are environmentally persistent chemicals widely detected in women of reproductive age. Prenatal PFAS exposure is associated with adverse health outcomes in children. We hypothesized that DNA methylation changes may result from prenatal PFAS exposure and may be linked to offspring cardio-metabolic phenotype.
OBJECTIVES: We estimated associations of prenatal PFAS with DNA methylation in umbilical cord blood. We evaluated associations of methylation at selected sites with neonatal cardio-metabolic indicators.
METHODS: Among 583 mother-infan

Craniofacial anomalies (CFAs), such as cleft lip and palate, are among the most frequent birth defects, often necessitating multidisciplinary care. The COVID-19 pandemic raised concerns that maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection and associated factors, such as fever, inflammation, and psychosocial stress, might elevate teratogenic risk. This systematic review aims to synthesize the evidence on the association between maternal COVID-19 exposure and nonsyndromic CFAs in neonates. We conducted a systematic review in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Major electronic databases (PubMed/MEDLINE, E

INTRODUCTION: Asthma is the most common chronic disease during pregnancy. Maternal asthma has been associated with a multitude of unwanted pregnancy outcomes, in some studies also with neurodevelopmental disorders. Here we investigated associations between maternal asthma and neurodevelopmental disorders.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied a retrospective population-based cohort of 1 271 439 mother-child pairs from singleton live births in Finland between the years 1996-2018. We used multiple high-cover registers for data collection. Adjusted unconditional Cox regression models were used to inv

BACKGROUND: Antenatal exposure to maternal psychological adversity, including depression, increases the risk of impaired neurodevelopment in children. The underlying biological mechanisms remain unclear, especially in early life during critical windows of development and maturation. This study investigated the association of antenatal maternal depression, maternal and early life inflammatory markers and neurodevelopmental outcomes in children at 2 years of age.
METHODS: A subgroup of mothers and their children (n = 255) that were enrolled in a South African birth cohort study, the Drakenstein

BACKGROUND: Maternal obesity induces adverse cardiac programming in offspring, and effective interventions are needed to prevent cardiovascular ill-health. Herein we hypothesized that exposure to maternal obesogenic diet-induced obesity in mice results in left ventricular remodelling and hypertrophy in early childhood, and that maternal N-acetylcysteine (NAC) treatment alleviates these effects in a sex-dependent manner.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The maternal obesity was induced in mice by the consumption of a Western diet accompanied by a 20 % sucrose solution. To determine the effect of NAC on th

OBJECTIVE: Autoimmune disruption may contribute to risk for autism; however, since previous studies relied upon clinical diagnoses, exposure misclassification and recall bias are limitations. Thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPO-Ab) is an autoantibody involved in autoimmune thyroiditis. We aimed to test the a priori hypothesis that positivity to maternal serum TPO-Ab (TPO-Ab+) (defined as >156 IU/ml) during pregnancy is related to childhood autism.
METHOD: The study was based on a nested case-control design of the Finnish Prenatal Study of Autism (FiPS-A), a national birth cohort that includes pr

A real-life environment during pregnancy involves multiple and simultaneous exposures to toxic chemicals. Perinatal exposures to toxic chemicals have been reported to exert an inhibitory effect on mouse neural development and behaviors. However, the effect of combined exposures of organophosphate and nicotine has not been previously reported. In this study, we investigated whether a combined exposure of diazinon and nicotine can have a synergistic effect. The effects of the combined chemical exposure on cell viability and neuronal differentiation were examined using mouse Sox1-GFP cells. Addit

Various factors are effective in reducing the fertility rate. This experiment aimed to investigate chlorpyrifos (CPF), an organophosphate, that could alter the structure of the uterus and the molecules involved in parental and fetal. CPF was injected intraperitoneally in thirty mice for five days in a week (six weeks). The animals were euthanized on the 5th day of gestation, then their blood and uterus were collected for biochemical and histopathological assays. Exposure to CPF resulted in a significant reduction in maternal weight gain and the number of litters. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT)

Little information exists about the plasma target nutritional needs of the >15 million premature infants <37 weeks gestation. Investigating ascorbic acid’s (AscA) role in infant health, our study details the relationship of infant characteristics and maternal health on infant plasma AscA level (pAscA) during postnatal development. Furthermore, we determined pAscA influence during the first week of life (EpAscA) with later infant morbidities. We hypothesize that pAscA is influenced by gestational organ immaturity, as well as maternal factors, with EpAscA associated with greater morbidity risk.

Exposure to child maltreatment can lead to long-term emotional difficulties and dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. However, no prior work has examined emotion regulation as a moderator of the association between childhood history of maltreatment and cortisol response to psychosocial challenge. Amongst a sample of 140 postpartum women, associations between childhood maltreatment, emotion regulation, and cortisol response to a computerized Emotional Stroop paradigm were examined using structural equation modeling. Three saliva samples (baseline, 20- and 40-min post-c

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is the most common congenital infection and a known cause of microcephaly, sensorineural hearing loss, and cognitive impairment among newborns worldwide. Natural maternal HCMV immunity reduces the incidence of congenital infection, but does not prevent the disease altogether. We employed a nonhuman primate model of congenital CMV infection to investigate the ability of preexisting antibodies to protect against placental CMV transmission in the setting of primary maternal infection and subsequent viremia, which is required for placental virus exposure. Pregnant, CD4
