In this study, we examined, by ultrastructural autoradiography, the uptake and intracellular transport of [3H]all-trans-retinoic acid ([3H]RA) in the livers of vitamin A-deficient hamsters. Four-week-old animals were administered 25 microCi of [3H]RA by gavage, and, at different intervals thereafter, one animal was sacrificed. Their livers were excised and processed for autoradiography. An autopsy case of dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa, recessive type, complicated by systemic secondary amyloidosis is described. In the thymus gland, differentiating T lymphocytes interact, at various levels of differentiation, with the thymic stroma. This type of interaction is generally thought to be important in the "education" of T lymphocytes. Developmental disorders in the period of the differentiation of the primitive foregut leads to atresia of the esophagus with tracheoesophageal fistula. An unusual myelodysplastic syndrome with similar features in two patients is described. The entity is characterized by a maturation arrest at the myelocyte stage, strikingly clumpy chromatin, and a clinical course marked primarily by difficulties caused by anemia and thrombocytopenia. Electron microscopic description of the characteristic abnormal clumpy chromatin cells is included. While the disorder is unquestionably a myelodysplastic syndrome, it is clearly distinct from chronic myelogenous leukemia, chronic myelomonocytic leukemia, and the spectrum of refractory anemias with excess blasts.

The effects of hyperthermia on phagocytosis and killing of Sporothrix schenckii by polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) were investigated in order to clarify the mechanism of local thermotherapy for sporotrichosis. Yeast cells of S. schenckii, PMNs and serum were incubated at 37 degrees C or 40 degrees C for 2 or 4 hours. Rate of phagocytosis and killing rate (rate of germination) were estimated, and their processes were observed by transmission electron microscopy.
