A case of surgically resected lung cancer in a patient with Kartagener's syndrome.

Kartagener's syndrome is a rare inherited disorder with a triology of symptoms (bronchiectasis, sinusitis and situs inversus) and is also associated with abnormalities of the cilia of the respiratory epithelium. Lung cancer arising in Kartagener's syndrome is very rare and to date only 5 cases have been reported in the English and Japanese literature. We report on a case of a 65-year-old Japanese male Kartagener's syndrome patient with squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. A left pneumonectomy was performed and no recurrence was found within 2 years.

The role of human papillomavirus in head and neck cancer.

Over the last 20 years, there has been increasing awareness of a subset of squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck (HNSCC), i.e. HPV-positive HNSCC. These cancers seem to differ somewhat from HPV-negative HNSCC. Patients with HPV-positive HNSCC tend to be younger and have a lower intake of tobacco and alcohol. Distinct molecular profiles separate them from HPV-negative cancers and show similarities with HPV-positive cervical SCC. There is evidence that HPV-positive HNSCC is a sexually transmitted disease. Patients with HPV-positive HNSCC are often diagnosed at a late stage with large cys

Rare coexistence of keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma with xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis in the same kidney: report of two cases.

Squamous cell carcinoma of urinary tract is a rarely encountered tumor. It is more frequently reported in urinary bladder and male urethra than renal pelvis. Squamous cell carcinoma of renal pelvis is usually associated with nephrolithiasis. However, coexistence of keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma with xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis is exceedingly rare with only one case on record so far. We report two such cases detected incidentally in patients who have undergone nephrectomy for hydronephrosis. The post operative histological evaluation revealed unsuspected squamous cell carcinoma of

Osteoradionecrosis of the cervical vertebrae in patients irradiated for head and neck cancers.

Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is one of the common late adverse effects that follow radiation therapy for head and neck cancers. ORN usually develops on the mandible and less frequently on the maxilla. We present three cases of ORN of the cervical vertebrae, which is rarely reported. Two patients suffered from secondary osteomyelitis after neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by definitive concurrent chemoradiation therapy with a hyperfractionated and an accelerated hyperfractionated regimen, respectively. For these patients, the high intensity of treatment was considered the cause of ORN. The third p

Chromoblastomycosis associated with a lethal squamous cell carcinoma.

Chromoblastomycosis is a subcutaneous mycosis caused by the dermatophytic fungi Fonsecaea, Phialophora and Cladophialophora. Usual complications include secondary infection, lymphedema and elephantiasis. Associated malignancies have been found in chronic cases. This case report describes a 72 year-old male with a 30 year history of chromoblastomycosis in the gluteal region, who went on to develop a squamous cell carcinoma.

Obturator prostheses following palatal resection: clinical cases.

Malignant tumours of the upper gum and hard palate account for 1-5% of malignant neoplasms of the oral cavity; two thirds of the lesions which involve these areas are squamous cell carcinomas. Most of these carcinomas are diagnosed late, when they invade the underlying bone. The procedures of choice for removal are: alveolectomy, palatectomy, maxillectomy, which may be total or partial. Surgical reconstruction of the defect may be carried out using a wide range of microvascularized flaps: osteomuscolocutaneous of the internal iliac crest, an osteocutaneous flap of the fibula or scapula, fascia

Massive Marjolin's ulcer in a burn graft site 46 years later.

Marjolin's ulcers, or malignancy originating from burn scars, have been recorded in the literature since the first century AD (Ozek et al. Marjolin's ulcers arising in burn scars. J Burn Care Rehabil 2001;22:384-9). The majority of cases of Marjolin's ulcers occur in primary burn scar sites with few reported cases following secondary graft placement. We report a case of Marjolin's ulcer that developed in a 57-year-old man, 46 years after initial skin graft placement following a left lower extremity burn. The patient presented to us following diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma of the verucous

[Clinical outcome of conservative treatment for pharyngocutaneous fistula].

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the conservative management and outcomes of pharyngocutaneous fistula after total laryngectomy. METHOD: Twenty-one patients with postoperative fistulas were identified and treated by conservative therapy. RESULT: Different treatment were given basing on the three stages of pharyngocutaneous fistula: drainage and cleaning stage, pressure bandaging stage and healing stage. Fourteen patients (66.7%) with the conservative therapy resumed oral feeding after closure of fistula, the other 7 patients had to be cured by further operation. CONCLUSION: Management basing on the st

Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the colon associated with hypercalcemia and hyperleukocytosis. Report of a case.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Squamous cell carcinoma of the colon is a rare entity. We report a case of a patient who presented with a perforated squamous cell carcinoma of the sigmoid colon. RESULTS: A 45-year-old female presented with a 2-month history of worsening abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting. She underwent an exploratory laparotomy and was found to have keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma of the sigmoid colon that had perforated forming multiple abscess cavities. The postoperative course was complicated by hypercalcemia and persistent hyperleukocytosis, ultimately resulting in the p

Superior vena cava syndrome: a case report.

We report a case of superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS) caused by squamous cell lung carcinoma in a 49-year-old man. He presented with severe edema of the face and upper half of the body with numerous dilated and tortuous cutaneous veins. Although we initially considered this case to be a drug eruption because the patient had repeated episodes of worsening clinical presentation whenever he took nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), persistent and characteristic dermatologic findings led us to the diagnosis of SVCS. After balloon angioplasty of the left subclavian vein to the SVC, derma

[Neurodermatitis. A risk factor for the development of squamous cell carcinoma].

Squamous cell conjunctival carcinomas (SCCC) are rare. We report on a 34-year-old patient with neurodermatitis and chronic conjunctivitis who presented with a therapy-resistant corneal ulcer induced by mechanical irritation diagnosed as SCCC. Chronic blepharoconjunctivitis seems to sustain the development of SCCC in patients with neurodermatitis because of their insufficient immune response.

Vulval squamous cell carcinoma arising in chronic hidradenitis suppurativa.

We report a case of vulval squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) arising in chronic hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). The patient had a complex medical history including a 25-year-history of Crohn's disease. In addition she had recently received immunosuppressive therapy for nephrotic syndrome secondary to membranous glomerulonephritis. A painful nodule was noted on the vulva that was clinically very suspicious of SCC. An excision biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. There are few publications in the English literature citing association between HS and the development of SCC. The first report in the English l

Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I defects in head and neck cancer: molecular mechanisms and clinical significance.

The potential role of immunological events in the pathogenesis and clinical course of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (SCCHN) has stimulated interest in the characterization of HLA class I antigen expression in SCCHN lesions, because these molecules play an important role in the interaction of malignant cells with the host's immune system. Therefore in this paper, following a description of the methodology used to analyze HLA class I antigen expression in normal tissues and in malignant lesions, we have reviewed data about the frequency of HLA class I antigen defects in about 500 primary

[Laryngeal tuberculosis masquerading as carcinoma. Report of one case and literature review].

Since the introduction of antituberculous medications, the incidence of laryngeal tuberculosis (LTB) has decreased. However, it is a fact the increasing number of cases of pulmonary or extrapulmonary TB mainly caused by the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. We report the clinical case of a 72 years old male with dysphonia secondary to LTB which masqueraded a carcinoma. It's certain diagnosis was the histopathologic exam of the biopsy obtained by microsurgery. There was a residual TB in lung after a complete study of Internal Medicine Department.
