The effect of head motion on brain age prediction using deep convolutional neural networks.

Deep learning can be used effectively to predict participants' age from brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data, and a growing body of evidence suggests that the difference between predicted and chronological age-referred to as brain-predicted age difference (brain-PAD)-is related to various neurological and neuropsychiatric disease states. A crucial aspect of the applicability of brain-PAD as a biomarker of individual brain health is whether and how brain-predicted age is affected by MR image artifacts commonly encountered in clinical settings. To investigate this issue, we trained and va

Combining features on vertical ground reaction force signal analysis for multiclass diagnosing neurodegenerative diseases.

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs), which are caused by the degeneration of neurons and their functions, affect a significant part of the world's population. Although gait disorders are one of the critical and common markers to determine the presence of NDDs, diagnosing which NDD the patients have among a group of NDDs using gait data is still a significant challenge to be addressed. In this study, we addressed the multi-class classification of NDDs and aim to diagnose Parkinson's disease (PD), Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis disease (AD), and Huntington's disease (HD) from a group containing NDD

Cascaded neural network-based CT image processing for aortic root analysis.

PURPOSE: Careful assessment of the aortic root is paramount to select an appropriate prosthesis for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Relevant information about the aortic root anatomy, such as the aortic annulus diameter, can be extracted from pre-interventional CT. In this work, we investigate a neural network-based approach for segmenting the aortic root as a basis for obtaining these parameters. METHODS: To support valve prosthesis selection, geometric measures of the aortic root are extracted from the patient's CT scan using a cascade of convolutional neural networks (CNNs)

Application of artificial intelligence using a convolutional neural network for detecting cholesteatoma in endoscopic enhanced images.

OBJECTIVE: We examined whether artificial intelligence (AI) used with the novel digital image enhancement system modalities (CLARA+CHROMA, SPECTRA A, and SPECTRA B) could distinguish the cholesteatoma matrix, cholesteatoma debris, and normal middle ear mucosa, and observe the middle ear cavity during middle ear cholesteatoma surgery. METHODS: A convolutional neural network (CNN) was trained with a set of images chosen by an otologist. To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of the constructed CNN, an independent test data set of middle ear images was collected from 14 consecutive patients with 26

Adaptive adversarial neural networks for the analysis of lossy and domain-shifted datasets of medical images.

In machine learning for image-based medical diagnostics, supervised convolutional neural networks are typically trained with large and expertly annotated datasets obtained using high-resolution imaging systems. Moreover, the network's performance can degrade substantially when applied to a dataset with a different distribution. Here, we show that adversarial learning can be used to develop high-performing networks trained on unannotated medical images of varying image quality. Specifically, we used low-quality images acquired using inexpensive portable optical systems to train networks for the

Extraction and Analysis of Dynamic Functional Connectome Patterns in Migraine Sufferers: A Resting-State fMRI Study.

Migraine seriously affects the physical and mental health of patients because of its recurrence and the hypersensitivity to the environment that it causes. However, the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of migraine are not fully understood. We addressed this issue in the present study using an autodynamic functional connectome model (A-DFCM) with twice-clustering to compare dynamic functional connectome patterns (DFCPs) from resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data from migraine patients and normal control subjects. We used automatic localization of segment points to improve the

Applying cascaded convolutional neural network design further enhances automatic scoring of arthritis disease activity on ultrasound images from rheumatoid arthritis patients.

OBJECTIVES: We have previously shown that neural network technology can be used for scoring arthritis disease activity in ultrasound images from rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, giving scores according to the EULAR-OMERACT grading system. We have now further developed the architecture of this neural network and can here present a new idea applying cascaded convolutional neural network (CNN) design with even better results. We evaluate the generalisability of this method on unseen data, comparing the CNN with an expert rheumatologist. METHODS: The images were graded by an expert rheumatolog

A multi-model deep convolutional neural network for automatic hippocampus segmentation and classification in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive and irreversible brain degenerative disorder. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a clinical precursor of AD. Although some treatments can delay its progression, no effective cures are available for AD. Accurate early-stage diagnosis of AD is vital for the prevention and intervention of the disease progression. Hippocampus is one of the first affected brain regions in AD. To help AD diagnosis, the shape and volume of the hippocampus are often measured using structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, these features encode limited information a

Heart rate monitoring and therapeutic devices: A wavelet transform based approach for the modeling and classification of congestive heart failure.

Heart rate monitoring and therapeutic devices include real-time sensing capabilities reflecting the state of the heart. Current circuitry can be interpreted as a cardiac electrical signal compression algorithm representing the time signal information into a single event description of the cardiac activity. It is observed that some detection techniques developed for ECG signal detection like artificial neural network, genetic algorithm, Hilbert transform, hidden Markov model are some sophisticated algorithms which provide suitable results but their implementation on a silicon chip is very compl

Automated arteriole and venule classification using deep learning for retinal images from the UK Biobank cohort.

The morphometric characteristics of the retinal vasculature are associated with future risk of many systemic and vascular diseases. However, analysis of data from large population based studies is needed to help resolve uncertainties in some of these associations. This requires automated systems that extract quantitative measures of vessel morphology from large numbers of retinal images. Associations between retinal vessel morphology and disease precursors/outcomes may be similar or opposing for arterioles and venules. Therefore, the accurate detection of the vessel type is an important elemen

Detecting central fixation by means of artificial neural networks in a pediatric vision screener using retinal birefringence scanning.

BACKGROUND: Reliable detection of central fixation and eye alignment is essential in the diagnosis of amblyopia ("lazy eye"), which can lead to blindness. Our lab has developed and reported earlier a pediatric vision screener that performs scanning of the retina around the fovea and analyzes changes in the polarization state of light as the scan progresses. Depending on the direction of gaze and the instrument design, the screener produces several signal frequencies that can be utilized in the detection of central fixation. The objective of this study was to compare artificial neural networks

Discriminating solitary cysts from soft tissue lesions in mammography using a pretrained deep convolutional neural network.

PURPOSE: It is estimated that 7% of women in the western world will develop palpable breast cysts in their lifetime. Even though cysts have been correlated with risk of developing breast cancer, many of them are benign and do not require follow-up. We develop a method to discriminate benign solitary cysts from malignant masses in digital mammography. We think a system like this can have merit in the clinic as a decision aid or complementary to specialized modalities. METHODS: We employ a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to classify cyst and mass patches. Deep CNNs have been shown to be

Quantum associative memory with linear and non-linear algorithms for the diagnosis of some tropical diseases.

This paper presents the QAMDiagnos, a model of Quantum Associative Memory (QAM) that can be a helpful tool for medical staff without experience or laboratory facilities, for the diagnosis of four tropical diseases (malaria, typhoid fever, yellow fever and dengue) which have several similar signs and symptoms. The memory can distinguish a single infection from a polyinfection. Our model is a combination of the improved versions of the original linear quantum retrieving algorithm proposed by Ventura and the non-linear quantum search algorithm of Abrams and Lloyd. From the given simulation result

Automatic detection and classification of leukocytes using convolutional neural networks.

The detection and classification of white blood cells (WBCs, also known as Leukocytes) is a hot issue because of its important applications in disease diagnosis. Nowadays the morphological analysis of blood cells is operated manually by skilled operators, which results in some drawbacks such as slowness of the analysis, a non-standard accuracy, and the dependence on the operator's skills. Although there have been many papers studying the detection of WBCs or classification of WBCs independently, few papers consider them together. This paper proposes an automatic detection and classification sy

Neuroanatomy of coprolalia in Tourette syndrome using functional magnetic resonance imaging.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the neural substrates of phonic tics in Tourette syndrome (TS) using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and compare with a proposed tic-generating network (TGN). PATIENTS: One with TS and one normal control. METHODS: fMRI scans were obtained on the TS patient during which numerous unsuppressed phonic tics occurred and, along with the scanner noise, were recorded on audiotape. The control underwent the same functional MRI sequence but mimicked the tics within predetermined, on-off time blocks. Fuzzy clustering (FC) methods were used to generate the activation

HyHO-DDI: A hypergraph neural network for high-order Drug-Drug interaction prediction.

OBJECTIVE: Drug-drug interactions (DDIs) are a major cause of adverse drug reactions (ADRs), particularly in patients receiving multiple medications. Existing computational methods predominantly focus on pairwise interactions, limiting their ability to capture the complex effects of high-order (multi-drug) therapies. This study proposes a computational framework for predicting myopathy-associated high-order DDIs. METHODS: We propose HyHO-DDIs, a hypergraph neural network model for predicting myopathy-associated high-order drug combinations using a dataset curated from the FDA Adverse Event Re

Real-time object detection for unmanned aerial vehicles based on vision transformer and edge computing.

Existing lightweight Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) detectors deployed on Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) platforms struggle with small object recognition and fail to capture long-range spatial dependencies, while standard Vision Transformer (ViT) architectures suffer from quadratic computational complexity that prohibits real-time inference on embedded hardware. This paper bridges this gap by proposing an integrated framework that adapts ViT for UAV-based real-time object detection through edge computing infrastructure. Our work presents three key contributions: (1) a hierarchical attention

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive and irreversible neurodegenerative disorder that has become one of the major health concerns for the elderly. Computer-aided AD diagnosis can assist doctors in quickly and accurately determining patients' severity and affected regions. METHODS: In this paper, we propose a method called MADNet for computer-aided AD diagnosis using multimodal datasets. The method selects ResNet-10 as the backbone network, with dual-branch parallel extraction of discriminative features for AD classification. It incorporates long-range dependencies modeling us

Abnormal Brain Connectivity in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Assessed by Graph Theory.

INTRODUCTION: Numerous resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) researches have indicated that large-scale functional and structural remodeling occurs in the whole brain despite an intact sensorimotor network after carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Investigators aimed to explore alterations of the global and nodal properties that occur in the whole brain network of patients with CTS based on topographic theory. METHODS: Standard-compliant fMRI data were collected from 27 patients with CTS in bilateral hands and 19 healthy control subjects in this cross-sectional study. The stati

Network model of nociceptive processing in the superficial spinal dorsal horn reveals mechanisms of hyperalgesia, allodynia, and spinal cord stimulation.

The spinal dorsal horn (DH) processes sensory information and plays a key role in transmitting nociception to supraspinal centers. Loss of DH inhibition during neuropathic pain unmasks a pathway from nonnociceptive Aβ-afferent inputs to superficial dorsal horn (SDH) nociceptive-specific (NS) projection neurons, and this change may contribute to hyperalgesia and allodynia. We developed and validated a computational model of SDH neuronal circuitry that links nonnociceptive Aβ-afferent inputs in lamina II/III to a NS projection neuron in lamina I via a network of excitatory interneurons. The exci
