Fluorescent Light Energy in Feline Surgical and Traumatic Wounds: A Prospective Single-Arm Pilot Study of Healing Progression and Bacterial Findings.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic and surgical wounds are common in cats, but their management is often challenging due to anatomical factors, delayed presentation, behavioural issues and frequent bacterial colonization. OBJECTIVES: This prospective, single-arm study aimed to evaluate feasibility and tolerance, and to describe changes in TIME wound scores and bacterial findings during a standardized FLE protocol in cats with surgical or traumatic skin lesions. FLE's potential had been shown in dogs but was previously unexplored in feline wound care. METHODS: A total of 17 cats with various skin lesions

Formulation and Characterization of Polymeric Cross-Linked Hydrogel Patches for Topical Delivery of Antibiotic for Healing Wound Infections.

Wound healing faces significant challenges in clinical settings. It often contains a series of dynamic and complex physiological healing processes. Instead of creams, ointments and solutions, alternative treatment approaches are needed. The main objective of the study was to formulate bacitracin zinc-loaded topical patches as a new therapeutic agent for potential wound healing. A free radical polymerization technique was optimized for synthesis. Polyethylene glycol-8000 (PEG-8000) was chemically cross-linked with acrylic acid in aqueous medium, using Carbopol 934 as a permeation enhancer and t

What do brain endocasts tell us? A comparative analysis of the accuracy of sulcal identification by experts and perspectives in palaeoanthropology.

Palaeoneurology is a complex field as the object of study, the brain, does not fossilize. Studies rely therefore on the (brain) endocranial cast (often named endocast), the only available and reliable proxy for brain shape, size and details of surface. However, researchers debate whether or not specific marks found on endocasts correspond reliably to particular sulci and/or gyri of the brain that were imprinted in the braincase. The aim of this study is to measure the accuracy of sulcal identification through an experiment that reproduces the conditions that palaeoneurologists face when workin

Topical pharmacokinetics of brinzolamide suspensions in rabbits and variability analysis for sample size and design considerations.

Identifying critical attributes for complex locally acting ophthalmic formulations and establishing in vitro-in vivo correlations can facilitate selection of appropriate thresholds for formulation changes that reflect lack of impact on in vivo performance. In this study the marketed antiglaucoma product Azopt® (1% brinzolamide suspension) and five other brinzolamide formulations varying in particle size distributions and apparent viscosities were topically administered in rabbits, and their ocular pharmacokinetics was determined in multiple ocular tissues. Statistical evaluation with ANOVA sho

Activity limitation and match load in para-footballers with cerebral palsy: An approach for evidence-based classification.

Classification is a hot topic in Paralympic sport, making the development of evidence-based and sport-specific classification systems mandatory. However, the development of measurements for exploring the relationships between the athletes' impairment and their activity limitation is a considerable scientific challenge in team Paralympic sport such as 7-side football (ie, CP Football). The aims of this study were 1) to describe the activity limitation and external match load (ML) differences among impairment profiles (FT) in international level footballers with cerebral palsy (CPFP) and 2) to a

Efficacy of the treatment with prostaglandin E-1 in venous ulcers of the lower limbs.

BACKGROUND: Venous ulcers represent an important medical problem because of their high prevalence and consequent sanitary costs. In this study, we evaluated the effect of prostaglandin E-1 (PGE-1), a drug that improves district ischemia, on the healing of venous ulcers. METHODS: We performed a randomized, placebo-controlled, single blind study in which 87 patients who had venous leg ulcers homogeneous for dimensions and characteristics were treated for 20 days with an infusion of prostaglandin E-1 or placebo, in association with topical therapy. The dimension and the number of the ulcers were

Immunomodulatory effects of oregano extract ointment on the expression of IL-10 and VEGF in white rat excision wounds.

BACKGROUND: Wound healing involves a sequential transition from inflammation to proliferation, requiring a balanced immune response. The disruption of this balance can impair repair. Origanum vulgare (oregano) has been reported to exert immunomodulatory properties; however, evidence regarding its influence on IL-10 and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) expression in excisional wound healing remains limited. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of topical oregano extract ointment on the expression of IL-10 and VEGF in a rat excisional wound model. METHODS: Twenty-four male whi

Antimicrobial Peptide LL-37 Facilitates Intracellular Uptake of RNA Aptamer Apt 21-2 Without Inducing an Inflammatory or Interferon Response.

RNA aptamers are synthetic single stranded RNA oligonucleotides that function analogously to antibodies. Recently, they have shown promise for use in treating inflammatory skin disease as, unlike antibody-based biologics, they are able to enter the skin following topical administration. However, it is important to understand the inflammatory milieu into which aptamers are delivered, as numerous immune-modulating mediators will be present at abnormal levels. LL-37 is an important immune-modifying protein upregulated in several inflammatory skin conditions, including psoriasis, rosacea and eczem

Topical application of recombinant activated factor VII during cesarean delivery for placenta previa.

BACKGROUND: During cesarean delivery in patients with placenta previa, hemorrhaging after removal of the placenta is often challenging. In this condition, the extraordinarily high concentration of tissue factor at the placenta site may constitute a principle of treatment as it activates coagulation very effectively. The presumption, however, is that tissue factor is bound to activated factor VII. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that topical application of recombinant activated factor VII at the placenta site reduces bleeding without affecting intravascular coagulation. STUDY DESIGN: We included 5
